  • Patent number: 7051813
Abstract: A method and system allows periodic access the wrong way through one or more one-way valves installed in a fluid flow stream. Fluid can flow through the bypassed valves or through the tools used to bypass the valves such as those of a reciprocating production pump. A stab tool cooperates with a valve to unseat a ball from a ball seat so as to bypass the ball and pass through the ball seat. The stab tool can be conveyed by tubing for discharge of fluid through ports in the stab tool. In another aspect of the invention, a rod installed within a pump between a reciprocating uphole valve and a downhole valve is arranged so that when the pump is closed, the stab tool at the rod's lower end passes through the downhole valve and a projection at the rod's upper end passed though the uphole valve the pump is partially closed. Fluid can be pumped in reverse through the pump fluidize debris.

  • Patent number: 7048050
Abstract: The steel drill string attached to a drilling bit during typical rotary drilling operations used to drill oil and gas wells is used for a second purpose as the casing that is cemented in place during typical oil and gas well completions. Methods of operation are described that provide for the efficient installation a cemented steel cased well wherein the drill string and the drill bit are cemented into place during one single drilling pass down into the earth. The normal mud passages or watercourses present in the rotary drill bit are used for the second independent purpose of passing cement into the annulus between the casing and the well while cementing the drill string into place during one single pass into the earth. A one-way cement valve is installed near the drill bit of the drill string that allows the cement to set up efficiently under ambiently hydrostatic conditions while the drill string and drill bit are cemented into place during one single drilling pass into the earth.

  • Patent number: 7040390
Abstract: This invention provides a method for controlling production operations using fiber optic devices. An optical fiber carrying fiber-optic sensors is deployed downhole to provide information about downhole conditions. Parameters related to the chemicals being used for surface treatments are measured in real time and on-line, and these measured parameters are used to control the dosage of chemicals into the surface treatment system. The information is also used to control downhole devices that may be a packer, choke, sliding sleeve, perforating device, flow control valve, completion device, an anchor or any other device. Provision is also made for control of secondary recovery operations online using the downhole sensors to monitor the reservoir conditions. The present invention also provides a method of generating motive power in a wellbore utilizing optical energy. This can be done directly or indirectly, e.g., by first producing electrical energy that is then converted to another form of energy.

  • Patent number: 7040391
Abstract: First and second networks of switching devices, each of which are an insulated gate bipolar transistor with an intrinsic reverse-biased clamping diode, are controlled to selectively connect a sinusoidal input voltage and an output to different nodes within a series of capacitors during different portions of input and output voltage cycles to produce a stepped sinusoidal output voltage. The topology requires a low part count, produces relatively low harmonics without filtering when powering artificial lift equipment within a borehole, and scales up to medium voltages without a step-up transformer. During variable speed operation of the lift equipment, optimized switching angles for controlling the switching devices during the voltage cycles may be selected based on modulation producing the desired speed and phase measurements.

  • Patent number: 7032691
Abstract: Underbalanced production and drilling may be achieved by a system which uses a rotating head coupled to surface blowout preventer stack for fluid flow control. A casing connects these surface components to a subsea shutoff assembly with a pair of ram shear devices to cut off the string to the wellhead. Both the casing and an alternate line may be latched so that they may be released if necessary. The alternate line may provide fluid from the surface to the subsea shutoff assembly for purposes of varying the density of the returning mud. The rotating head may include a rubber packer to prevent upward flow of drilling fluid and production hydrocarbons and, at the same time, provide rotation to the drill string.

  • Patent number: 7025139
Abstract: The invention relates to jet device used for extracting oil from wells. The inventive method consists in the following: a pump, a connecting and disconnecting unit, a valve unit, a packer and a shank are mounted on a tubing string before actuating the inventive device. A perforator is run into the well on a mounting seat in the pass channel of the pump, the packer being released. Differential pressure being produced, the perforator is blasted against the productive stratum which is then drained. The perforator being replaced by the transmitter and receiver-transducer of physical fields, the stratum is studied while the pump operates. Said transmitter and receiver-transducer being pulled from the well, a valve chamber and a blocking insert separating the cavity of the tubing string from environment are thrown into the well. The well starts to work in a natural flow regime.

  • Patent number: 7025146
Abstract: Fluid setting pressure is delivered to a hydraulically set well packer through an external conduit strapped to the exterior of a well workstring above the packer assembly. The continuity of the external conduit is continued past the packer assembly by following a flow channel along the mandrel sleeve thickness. Representatively, the external conduit may serve a primary well function other than packer setting (e.g. well chemical delivery). A calibrated rupture element in the external conduit is disposed to initially obstruct external conduit flow past the packer element. Consequently, fluid pressure transferred down the external conduit is first channeled to the packer setting pressure chamber. After setting, the fluid pressure in the external conduit is increased to rupture the calibrated element. When the external conduit flow channel is opened by rupture of the calibrated element, and the additional well service function may be accomplished.

  • Patent number: 7021373
Abstract: A system and method for pumping water from a wellbore to a surface location using an improved motorless water pump. The improved motorless water pump is a downhole hydraulic ram pump powered by the renewable energy source, groundwater. As water falls down a wellbore from an upper strata to a lower strata, the conversion of the water's momentum to energy is used to compress air captured in the ram's pressure chamber. The compressed air contained in the pressure chamber pushes down on the water captured in the pressure chamber causing the water to exit the pressure chamber through an outlet and into tubing. The water in the tubing is responsive to the pressure in the chamber rising to the surface.
