  • Patent number: 4663803
Abstract: A security hinge joint includes a substantially planar, flexible first member, including first and second blind hinge eyes. A second member is pivotable relative to the first member and includes at least one second open hinge eye which lies between the blind hinge eyes. A hinge pin extends through the second open hinge eye and into the first blind hinge eye. The first blind hinge eye wraps around the end of the hinge pin, enclosing the bottom of the pin when the joint is in a closed position, and is interrupted to define a lead-in slot through which the hinge pin can pass. For insertion or removal of the hinge pin, one end of the first member must be flexed out of the plane of the first member.

  • Patent number: 4662553
Abstract: A shimming system and shim assembly are provided, particularly for door guides and supports for sliding and folding doors of closets and the like. The shim assembly includes shim members having shim plates and projections of different lengths so that different shim members can be assembled in stacked relationship with one another to raise the door guide or support to a desired height. The shim members are of clear plastic material so as not to require painting, staining, or the like. Each shim member can be readily reduced to proper width and length so as to be positioned completely under the base of the door guide or support and thereby be substantially concealed. The shim plates have score grooves by which portions can be broken off to reduce the shim plate to the proper size and the shimming system includes a tool for facilitating removal of the unwanted portions beyond the score grooves.

  • Patent number: 4657447
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the angular position of a workpiece and for positioning the same relative to at least one tool. The workpiece has at least one set of teeth. In a first measuring operation, a measuring wheel having a tooth construction is made to mesh with a set of teeth of a reference workpiece. Pulses are derived from the rotating measuring wheel and from a reference shaft which has a known gear ratio with the measuring wheel, and consequently also turns. A first phase measurement is undertaken between the pulses, the result of which is stored as the reference value. The reference workpiece is replaced with a workpiece which is to be machined and which is provided with teeth. A second phase measurement between the pulses of the reference shaft and of the measuring wheel are undertaken in a second measuring operation. The reference value of the first phase measurement is compared with the result of the second phase measurement.

  • Patent number: 4656690
Abstract: In an apparatus for closing a fireproof door, a holding device comprises a latch mechanism and a slider. The latch mechanism comprises an actuator member swingably supported in a housing which is provided with a tubular portion wherein a stopper is inserted and downwardly biased by a spring, the biasing force of the spring being adjustable by a screw which is threaded into the tubular portion. The slider is provided with an inclined surface at the front end thereof and a through-hole to receive the stopper therein. The slider is slid into the spacing formed between the actuator member and the housing with upwardly guiding the stopper by the inclined surface of the slider and the slider is locked by the stopper when it falls into the through-hole of the slider. The slider is released from the latch mechanism by swinging the actuator member or upwardly pushing the stopper against the biasing force of the spring.

  • Patent number: 4653141
Abstract: A single or opposite direction damper hinge has a casing rotatably enclosing a rotor. The rotor has a center cylindrical portion mounting a reduced outwardly projecting intermediate portion which in turn outwardly mounts a further reduced stop portion. The casing has a main inner cylindrical surface which is interrupted by an inwardly projecting reduced engagement portion. In one embodiment, all of the rotor center, intermediate and stop portions and the casing main inner surface are coaxial. The casing reduced engagement portion, however, has a larger radius than the outwardly projecting intermediate portion of the rotor and is eccentric to the rotor outer surfaces and the casing main inner cylindrical surface. In assembly for operation, the rotor is mounted coaxially in the casing with the exception of the casing engagement portion which, in this embodiment, has the larger radius and is eccentric to the rotor intermediate portion.

  • Patent number: 4651382
Abstract: A plastic part has a broad surface area for solvent bonding to another plastic part; the bonding surface has a groove, recess, or non-dissolvable portion for restricting the solvent to a narrow marginal edge area for uniform distribution. In one embodiment, a plastic hinge (FIG. 2) and two hinged members (64,66) are pivotally interconnected by the leaves. Grooves (52, 54) are formed on the mating surface of hinge halves. These grooves define and isolate marginal portions (56, 58) on the faces of the leaves from inner portions (60, 62). The grooves act as barriers to prevent penetration of a solvent, used for bonding the hinge leaves to the two hinged members, from the inner support portions of the leaves. When the solvent is injected into the area of contact between the mating plastic parts from the outer edge of each hinge element, e.g., by a syringe, it wets and dissolves the marginal portions and the underlying areas of the two hinged members but is restricted to the marginal areas by the grooves.

  • Patent number: 4649647
Abstract: A hand-operated cutting tool for cutting walling materials such as paneling and drywall. The tool has a base with a smooth, flat bottom, similar to a planing tool. Its handle is curved, attaching at at least one end of the base, and extends over the base. A cutting blade is centrally located on the base, and held in place by a blade clamp. The blade clamp is pivotably attached to the base such that the tip of the blade extends through an opening formed for that purpose in the bottom of the base, and the tip is extended and retracted by the pivoting motion of the clamp. The clamp also has attached thereto a lever arm to facilitate the pivoting. The lever arm is biased against an upstanding member which is manufactured such that the lever arm, and thus the blade tip, can assume different positions. The upstanding member has a continuous groove formed therein which winds about the member from top to bottom such that it appears as several grooves which they may correspond to several positions of the lever arm.

  • Patent number: 4649595
Abstract: A resiliently mounted dual wheel caster is provided which includes an outer body including a hub with a transverse aperture, and an inner body member pivotally mounted to the outer body and mountable to an article to be supported by the caster. A resilient shock absorbing member is disposed between the inner body and the hub of the outer body. An axle is disposed through the aperture in the hub and resilient wheels are mounted one each end of the axle. The resilient wheels and the resilient member act in series to effectively absorb shock encountered by irregularities in travelled terrain and prevent such shock from reaching the supported article.

  • Patent number: 4649598
Abstract: An energy saver door closer for use with a sliding door. A long cylindrical housing is attached to one vertical edge of the sliding door, a weight is in the cylinder and a cable connects the weight over a pulley in the top of the cylinder to an anchor in the door jam. A seal surrounds the weight so that there is a sealing contact with the housing to form a pneumatic cylinder therein. The lower part of the cylinder is provided with passageways which lets air go in or out. The upper part of the weight is provided with a valve which is always biased to the opened position but is held closed so long as the cable is taut When the cable is loose, the valve opens and air can rush out and the door will close faster.

  • Patent number: 4648152
Abstract: A retractable door stop comprising a body secured to a hinge assembly is described. The door stop is adapted to be pivotally secured to a door jamb on which a door is pivotally mounted. In use, the door stop is pivotable about an axis spaced from the pivot axis of the door and generally parallel thereto between an inoperative and an operative position. In the operative position of the body of the door stop engages the door at the end side to which the door hinges are secured and which abuts the door jamb when the door is closed so as to keep the door in an open position.
