  • Patent number: 4615377
Abstract: An improved method of and apparatus for striping hot steel slabs on the runout table of a continuous caster employs a torch support and drive mechanism adapted to support a scarfing torch for movement at a uniform rate across the surface of a slab maintained in a stationary position on the runout table. A radiation thermometer supported for movement with the torch is focused to continuously monitor the striping operation by detecting flashes or temperature increases resulting from reduction of alumina inclusions during the striping process and transmitting an electrical signal to a microprocessor which converts the signal to electrical impulses that are counted, recorded or otherwise utilized to evaluate the slab being striped. The microprocessor controls operation of the apparatus during the striping process to provide a more reliable evaluation of the slab.

  • Patent number: 4605056
Abstract: In a continuous casting process, molten metal is supplied into a generally open top horizontal mold having an inner wall maintained at a temperature which is higher than the solidification temperature of the molten metal, while the molten metal is maintained under generally zero pressure at the outlet opening of the mold. A dummy bar is drawn horizontally away from the outlet opening of the mold to cause the molten metal to be drawn out of the mold opening and undergo solidification at the surfaces thereof directly proximate to the outlet opening. The exposed surface of the molten metal in the mold is heated through the open mold top by a heater spaced out of contact with the molten metal surface.

  • Patent number: 4601424
Abstract: A method for fabricating metallurgical contacts is disclosed for making thermocompression bonds to a metallized ceramic substrate on which semiconductor chips are to be mounted and electrically contacted. The method comprises placing a nickel layer on the metallized portion of the substrate and then covering the nickel with an immersion layer of gold. The gold immersion layer is selectively removed from locations where thermocompression-bonded contacts are desired. Removal is accomplished by applying a chemical stripper. Heavy gold is electroplated on said locations and the assemblage is heat treated prior to placement of the thermocompression-bonded contacts.

  • Patent number: 4596086
Abstract: A weed guard for incorporation within a fishing jig includes an elongated flexible plastic member having a generally rounded and substantially flattened head portion at one end thereof and a generally cylindrical portion at the opposite end thereof interconnected by a central neck portion. The flattened head has a central bore formed therein and extending perpendicular to the flattened surfaces thereof for allowing the flattened head to be passed over and around the barbed tip of the fishing jig and positioned proximate to the leadhead of the fishing jig. A conventional soft plasic skirt is thereafter installed on the fishing jig. The cylindrical end of the elongated plastic member terminates in a blunt end into which the barbed tip of the jig is engaged to prevent the hook from snagging weeds or other submerged debris. The central neck portion of the elongated plastic member is reduced in width to facilitate the bending of the elongated plastic member along the central neck portion.

  • Patent number: 4588015
Abstract: An apparatus and method for casting metal strip includes a moveable chill body having a quench surface thereon. A nozzle mechanism deposits a stream of molten metal onto a quenching region of the quench surface to form the strip, and a gas supply mechanism provides an initial gas mixture, which consists essentially of carbon monoxide and oxygen. An ignition mechanism ignites the initial gas mixture to create an exothermic reaction which provides a low density, reducing flame atmosphere at a depletion region located substantially adjacent to and upstream from the quenching region. A control mechanism controls the initial gas mixture to produce an adjusted reducing flame atmosphere at the depletion region in which the adjusted reducing flame has a burnt gas composition that includes substantially no free oxygen.

  • Patent number: 4588020
Abstract: A system is provided for limiting the parameters of the motion of a billet in a bow-type continuous casting plant. The stiffness of the billet is determined from values of the motion of the elements of the billet and/or from properties of the advancing billet as picked up by sensing elements. The determined values are compared with preset limiting values for parameters such as the maximum residual withdrawal time, the maximum still permissible stoppage time period and/or the permissible minimum withdrawal speed. If the limiting values are exceeded a signal is provided by a computing provision and fed to an alarm or is used to trigger a shut-off of the continuous casting process.

  • Patent number: 4581842
Abstract: A trolling diver includes a planing body with a ballast weight at the front. A mast is pivotally mounted to the center of the body for movement fore and aft between forward and aft positions for climbing and diving. A trip line extends from the front of the body, through a trip line guide on the mast, and to the rod line. The lure is connected by a leader to the body. A spring connects the aft end of the body to a point midway along the mast to bias the mast aft. The spring exerts minimal and substantial reset torques on the mast when in the forward and aft positions by having the spring force act through a short and long torque arms. The torque arm in the forward mast position is preferably adjustable.

  • Patent number: 4582244
Abstract: The invention involves a novel method for forming sine wave I-beams, and other sandwich structures having a curved core. The core pieces are flat prior to forming. The sandwich structure consists of two face pieces and two core pieces, wherein the core pieces are similar in shape to each other. The pieces are placed in a stack. Each core piece has two lip portions. The lip portions are extensions of the core pieces, and have a curved shape prior to forming that does not change during forming. The core pieces are joined to each other along one lip portion, and each core piece is joined to one face piece along the other lip portion. The shape of the curved core sheets and the shape of the lip portions determine the curvature of the formed core. The core pieces are unfolded and expanded in forming dies at elevated temperatures and pressures to form the desired structure.
