  • Patent number: 4013380
Abstract: A hydraulic machine is provided with a control for reducing the capacity of the machine when subjected to excessive pressure.A piston is slidable in a cylinder to define two chambers, the chambers being interconnected by a restrictive passage. One chamber is connected to the pressure line and the other chamber is connected to a relief valve so that in the steady state the pressure in each is equal. When the pressure reaches a predetermined level the relief valve opens and vents the other chamber. The passage prevents flow to the other chamber creating a pressure differential which causes the piston to move along the cylinder and operate the machine control to decrease the capacity thereof.

  • Patent number: 4012175
Abstract: The operation of a 4-way, open-center, three position hydraulic valve is coordinated with the operation of the pump for the hydraulic system in which the valve is controlling flow. As the valve is moving from its open-center position to either one of its other two operative positions, a switch maintains the power circuit for the pump open and closes that circuit to activate the pump after the valve has assumed one of the other two positions.

  • Patent number: 4008984
Abstract: Flexible diaphragms mounted on the ends of a shaft contact a liquid to be dispensed (e.g., syrup bases). A chamber is located about the shaft side of each diaphragm, which chamber is in communication via shaft passages with outlets in the shaft wall. A valving member is slidingly received on the shaft and interconnected with a source of pressurized gas by a flexible hose. The valving members transfers from a position where one opening is in communication with the pressurized gas and the other opening is exposed, to a second position where the relationship of the shaft openings to the valving member is reversed. A pair of opposed coil openings urge the valving member past the longitudinal shaft center to reverse direction after the coils are sufficiently loaded, which results when the valving member is at the end of either shaft stroke.

  • Patent number: 4003679
Abstract: A pumping system is provided in which a low pressure metering pump injects fluid charges into a high pressure pump which in turn operates into a high pressure load. The high pressure pump is designed to always present a low pressure at its input on its intake stroke. This insures that the metering pump will always operate into a low pressure regardless of the load, and will therefore be enabled to always accurately meter charges into the high pressure pump.In various embodiments, the high pressure pump and/or the low pressure pump include spring elements for providing well defined pumping pressures. In some embodiments, an oil reservoir and diaphragm provide a well defined pressure against which the metering pump can operate.

  • Patent number: 4003426
Abstract: A heat or thermal energy storage structure comprising a crosslinked polymeric resinous matrix having a plurality of substantially unconnected small closed cavities and a heat sink material encapsulated within the cavities. The structure is characterized in that the heat sink material forms an essentially stable dispersion in the uncured polymeric resinous matrix when mixed therewith before the matrix is crosslinked. The structure can beneficially be used in conjunction with low level heat or thermal energy collector means and heat transfer means to provide a space heating or cooling apparatus. The storage structure may also be effectively used to provide an additional function of a building component in a building construction such as a wall structure.

  • Patent number: 3999896
Abstract: A continuously operable piston pump for conveying of viscous materials, such as mortar mixes or the like comprises first and second chambers separated from a pressure source, such as a piston cylinder arrangement, by respective flexible wall means. The chambers are connected in series with each other. The pressure source is controlled by a further piston cylinder arrangement including a control valve at each end of the control cylinder. The control valves are operated by a flip-flop means which in turn is actuated by means directly coupling the flip-flop means to the piston rod of the control piston cylinder arrangement. The pressure piston cylinder arrangement and the control piston cylinder arrangement are constructed to have a common axis, and thus also a common piston rod located in said axis. The control valves are connected to said common piston rod.

  • Patent number: 3999890
Abstract: All of the components of a sump pump apparatus necessary to be in the sump are enclosed in a common case. In one embodiment, this case is of plastic and holds the motor means, the pump impeller and at least part of the water level sensors. The motor means is in a bell holding trapped air so that the water cannot reach the motor means. In one such embodiment the motor means is a single D.C. motor and in another embodiment it consists of a D.C. motor coupled by a one-way clutch to an A.C. motor which in turn is connected to the pump impeller. In each of these two embodiments, the water level sensor includes a tube having an open end in the bell to sample the air pressure in the bell and an end externally of the sump connected to a pressure actuated switch which turns on the motor means at a particular air pressure above ambient. Also within the bell is a float operated switch serving as a back-up to the air actuated switch. Using two motors, as mentioned above, the A.C.

  • Patent number: 3995974
Abstract: This hydraulic engine utilizes two sets of hydraulic cylinders connected to a shaft so as to be alternately pressurized as the shaft is reciprocally driven by a pair of conventional internal combustion chambers. The outlets of all hydraulic cylinders are connected to a common output line via valves. During each power stroke certain of the hydraulic cylinders being pressurized are selectively disconnected (depressurized) from the output line. This effectively decreases the load on the driving chamber, and insures a relatively constant, high pressure hydraulic fluid output level despite changes in supplied force during each power stroke. The selective cylinder disconnection may be implemented programmatically in response to changes in engine parameters such as combustion chamber pressure. The engine also includes a pump for supplying input hydraulic fluid to each set of cylinders while that set is not being pressurized. The input fluid force is additive to the power supplied by the operative combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 3994623
Abstract: A method is disclosed for a cascade control of a dynamic compressor to maintain a constant mass flow rate to a process. The method consists of a successive junction of control loops for controlling the speed of rotation, the pressure in the delivery, and the mass flow rate; the output signal of each outer loop being the input signal for the inner loop and each of the loops containing a compensating element to reduce the effects of large time constants of all previous loops. An automatic control system based on using the above method, distinguished by its great static and dynamic precision in maintaining a controlled parameter, and by the high reliability of protection of the compressor from surge, and protection from a dangerous increase of the speed of rotation and of a dangerous increase of the discharge pressure.

  • Patent number: 3992132
Abstract: Relative motion is provided between a set of primary magnets positioned along a path of relative motion, and a set of secondary magnets positioned along the path of motion to confront the primary magnets. Such motion causes the primary magnets to displace the secondary magnets in directions transverse to the path. Power output means are driven by transverse displacement of the secondary magnets. The polarities of the magnets are such that the forces of magnetic attraction in one direction parallel to the path are substantially equal to the forces of magnetic repulsion in the opposite direction parallel to the path, whereby a minimum of energy is required to produce said relative motion. SUThis invention relates to an energy conversion system wherein primary motion in a given path produces secondary motion in a direction transverse to the given path.

  • Patent number: 3992131
Abstract: A two-stage pump assembly employs a rotary-type gerotor pump combined with a reciprocating axial piston-type pump both mounted on and driven by a common shaft of a motor. A single key drivingly connects the rotor of the gerotor pump and the angle plate of the axial piston pump to the shaft of the motor for simultaneous operation of the two pumps. A wear sleeve is seated on the shaft of the motor and coacts with an oil seal carried by a common wall between the motor and the gerotor housing to prevent leaking of the fluid being pumped.
