    Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method and an apparatus to identify alpha-emitting radionuclides and to measure absolute alpha radioactivity using a low temperature detector. A 4? metallic absorber which encloses a radioactive material containing alpha-emitting radionuclides absorbs the total alpha decay energy in the form of thermal energy. The corresponding temperature changes are measured by a low temperature detector attached to the 4? absorber with high energy resolution. The identification of alpha-emitting radionuclides is declared by comparing the measured temperature signal with characteristic decay energy of radionuclides. The absolute amount of the radionuclides is determined by counting the number of the pulses for each of the identified nuclides.

The thermometer further includes processing circuitry in electrical communication with the thermopile array. The processing circuitry is further operative to determine a temperature of a target location within the field of view based on electrical signals derived from a subset of the thermopile elements. The subset of thermopile elements may be a single thermopile element located approximately at a center of the thermopile array.

The controller is arranged to supply electrical power to the thermistor and to provide an output indicative of the identity of the fluid based upon whether the electrical power supplied to the thermistor is above or below a threshold value. The threshold value is adjustable in accordance with the measured ambient temperature of the fluid. Examples of such a detector provide reliable fluid identification despite variations in ambient temperature of the fluid and such a detector may be compact, inexpensive, reliable and robust.

    Abstract: A portable temperature sensing probe (10) having a plurality of thermocouples (18) is inserted into a tank (16) mounted on a truck or other receptacle at the time of loading a hot liquid, e.g., molten sulfur (14). The probe and at least a portion of the associated wiring or leads are attached to the loading pipe (22) and/or discharge nozzle, and the probe is inserted into the interior of the tank before the molten sulfur (14) is discharged. The signals from the plurality of thermocouples (18) are amplified and the corresponding temperature information is transmitted to a display and control device (30). Due to the significant differential between the temperature of the rising molten sulfur (14) and the vapors in the tank overhead space (26), the signals generated indicate which of the thermocouple (18) are in contact with molten sulfur (14) or the vapor zone (32). The generated signals adjust the shut-off valve (38) that controls the flow of molten sulfur (14) into the tank (16).

Typical control requirements are +/?0.1° C. The thermal measurement circuit converts a sensor output to a high level voltage or current with great accuracy and provides noise immunity and sensor isolation. While digital outputs from sensor converters can have the greatest noise immunity, the noise associated with digital circuitry may contaminate low level sensor signals so in many cases an analog sensor converter is preferred because of low noise generation, especially if the converter is near the sensor. The circuit is low cost, reliable, generates minimal heat is immune to, and does not generate noise, and requires minimal calibration effort.
