Patent number: 7296728Abstract: Configurations for a packing container formed from a single, preformed, rigid unit of generally U-shaped cross-section are disclosed. One configuration utilizes three end closures to enclose an object with an elevated end. Another configuration employs three end closures to enclose an object with an elevated mid-section. A third configuration uses two end closures to enclose an object with random elevations. With three end closures, a fourth configuration encloses two or more dissimilar objects in separate compartments. The fourth configuration is especially useful for items that should be prevented from touching or intermingling during shipping. A fifth configuration combines elements of the other four configurations, allowing a user to ship objects with elevated ends, elevated mid-sections, or random elevations in separate compartments. A sixth configuration encloses one or more objects with two end closures that are about equal in length to one another. A device for forming the container is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2006Date of Patent: November 20, 2007Assignee: Illinois Tool Works, Inc.Inventors: Anatoly Gosis, Michael D. Patent number: 7293694Abstract: An elongate, rectangular box (12, 14, 40, 60, 70, 90, 100) and method for packaging containers (C), wherein the box can be cross-stacked for stable stacking of the boxes, and optimizes utilization of pallet space. Containers (C) are placed in the box in nested, offset relationship in a parallelogram shaped arrangement, and in one embodiment interior corner panels (20, 21) extend angularly across two diagonally opposite corners of the box, defining an interior box shape closely conforming to the parallelogram-shaped arrangement of the containers. The corner panels may be cut from the side walls (18, 19) and folded inwardly and secured at a free edge (28) to an adjacent end wall (16, 17), defining openings (22, 23) in the side wall through which the containers are visible. Side wall segments (24, 25, 26) at the bottom and sides of the opening, in cooperation with the corner panels, retain the containers in place in the box. The box is especially suited for packaging four one-gallon containers.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2004Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Charles P Weimer, Jr.

Patent number: 7293695Abstract: An interactive food serving package (10) formed from a blank (B) of paperboard has a tray (11) with openings (19) for receiving items, and a combined lid and game piece (12) detachably connected to the tray. The tray has front and back walls (13, 14), opposite end walls (16, 17), a bottom wall (15) and a top wall (18). The front and back walls are pivotally connected to the top and bottom walls, and the end walls comprise releasably interlocking end closure flaps (24, 25 and 46, 47), whereby the tray may be moved between a flattened condition with the top and bottom walls lying flat against one another, and an open expanded condition with the top and bottom walls in spaced parallel relationship. Cuts made in the top wall define a plurality of partition panels (29, 30 and 36, 37) extending perpendicularly between the top and bottom walls in the expanded condition, and including at least one transverse partition panel (36, 37) holding the tray in the expanded position.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2003Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: KFC CorporationInventor: David E. Patent number: 7290696Abstract: The embodiments of the present invention provide a blank foldable material that may be configured to form a container. When formed, the container is self-locking and includes top panel assemblies that form additional bearing surfaces. The blank is configured to form a container that includes corners having multiple thicknesses. However, despite the multiple thickness of the corner assemblies, the panels are only adhered in one location per corner. The single adhesion/corner arrangement provides a multi-wall corner arrangement that is strong, yet has flexible applications. The single adhesive/corner adds vertical stacking strength and lateral stability between the panels. The unique approach of only adhering at one place per corner is a space and cost saving improvement that maintains a container integrity and usefulness.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2005Date of Patent: November 6, 2007Assignee: Weyerhaeuser CompanyInventor: Jack A. Patent number: 7284688Abstract: A box closure device releasably engages the flaps of a box in a closed configuration. The device has a lower element which extends generally in a first plane. An upper element is connected to the lower element and spaced substantially parallel to it by a central stem, such that portions of the box flaps are engaged between the upper and the lower element. A tab is connected to the upper element along a living hinge and is pivotable about the hinge from a first position extending substantially in the same plane as the upper element, to a second position which extends upwardly from the upper element, such that the tab may be engaged to assist in the rotation of the device when being installed in a box, and, when released, the tab returns to the first position. The lower element may be a planar disc, or may be cupped.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2006Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Inventor: John G. Barsness

Patent number: 7281649Abstract: The present invention generally provides a bottom seal for a container. The container has a side wall having an upper end and a lower end. A bottom wall closes the lower end of the side wall. The bottom wall has a base and a skirt projecting from an outer periphery of the base. A bottom seal made of a portion of the lower end of the side wall being folded generally radially inward and back on itself forms a first seal region and an adjacent second seal region. The first seal region includes the skirt and the lower end of the side wall. The second seal region does not include the skirt. One or more concentric ring seals, knurling patterns, or both are formed in at least one of the first and second seal regions of the bottom seal.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2004Date of Patent: October 16, 2007Assignee: Solo Cup Operating CorporationInventor: Thomas David Pyper, Jr.

Patent number: 7273162Abstract: A fry scoop with one or two cells store food and condiments within a folded container. The fry scoop starts as a single blank with a rear panel, a rear wall, a bottom, a front wall with flanking side panels, and a front panel. The panels fold onto their respective walls, the walls fold upwardly from the bottom, and the sides then fold and attach to the rear wall. With the sides, front wall, and rear wall upright, an open top food container forms. Pulling the front and rear panels inwards opens two condiment cells. The front and rear panels have similar edge shapes and attain the same height from the bottom. The similarity between the front and the rear of the present invention allows consumers, or restaurant staff, to load the scoop from the front or the rear.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2005Date of Patent: September 25, 2007Assignee: Altivity Packaging, LLCInventor: Mark P. Patent number: 7261231Abstract: A folded food carton is formed from a matable, lay flat blank for retaining, transporting and serving hot food such as pizza. The blank includes an arrangement of end panels, side panels and cover panels foldable relative to a bottom panel such that, in the erected carton, the cover panels overlap and are interlocked with the side panels by means of offset locking tabs. The end panels slant upwardly and inwardly from the bottom panel to add rigidity and save material for the carton. The side panels flare upwardly and outwardly from the bottom panel and extend above the cover panels to enhance stackability and prevent shifting of stacked cartons one on top of the other. Several methods of packaging pizza in the folded carton are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2004Date of Patent: August 28, 2007Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventors: Wayne H. Patent number: 7246737Abstract: The box, which can be made from a single sheet or from five separate pieces which are fastened to one another to form the box, is such that at the front ends, extensions project with transverse folding lines to form corner reinforcements. The extensions that form these reinforcements present four folding lines that define the sectors, which form an initial sector which is attached to the inner face of the side, a second sector with a diagonal disposition, a third sector which is attached on the inside of the front, a fourth sector which lies at right angles to the diagonal sector, and a last sector which is attached to one of the two halves of the inner face of the diagonal sector. At their upper edge the sectors present flanges which form projections perpendicular to one another, for positioning in matched opposing notches when the boxes are stacked.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2002Date of Patent: July 24, 2007Assignee: Videcart, S.A.Inventor: Pedro Teixidor Casanovas
