  • Patent number: 8503314
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer-readable media are provided for monitoring circuit diversity within a communications network. Information is gathered regarding circuits within the communications network. Diversity rules for the circuits are received. The diversity rules may limit the sharing of network resource between primary and secondary circuit pairs. The information regarding the circuits is analyzed to identify violations of the diversity rules. A report on the violations of the diversity rules is generated.

  • Patent number: 8477608
Abstract: A method is described for controlling the conformance of a data flow in a communication system to a traffic definition. The communication system comprises a transmitter and a receiver and data packets transporting the data flow are sent from the transmitter to the receiver. The receiver sends responses identifying received data packets to the transmitter, and the transmitter comprises a control function which controls the number of sent data packets for which no response is received according to a limit for the number of outstanding data packets. A conditioning criterion is obtained for the data flow, the conditioning criterion being associated with the traffic definition. The receiver determines a conformance parameter for the received data packets transporting the data flow. The limit and/or the sending of the responses is modified according to the conditioning criterion and the determined conformance parameter for controlling the number of transmitted data packets.

  • Patent number: 8467313
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method of determining available bandwidth at a physical layer (PHY) device at a server on a broadband network. A link layer controller of a master administrator adaptively polls a PHY device over a set of time intervals. During polling, the controller places a PHY device's address on a line of a bus and awaits a response from the PHY device. Based upon the response from the PHY device, the administrator can determine whether the PHY device has available bandwidth. The link layer controller uses this information to recalculate its polling scheme to better make use of the available bandwidth over the shared transmission medium to which each PHY device in the network is attached.

  • Patent number: 8462626
Abstract: The present system uses point-to-point data links between intelligent network elements located in the feeder/distribution network to provide reliable, secure, bi-directional broadband access. Digital signals, or messages, are terminated at the intelligent network elements, switched and regenerated for transmission across additional upstream or downstream data links as needed to connect a home to a headend or router. Messages indicative of an end user routing ID (RID) are identified and the information extracted for user with successive messages. In this manner, the data links are made over relatively short runs of coax cable, which can provide greater bandwidth than the typical end-to-end feeder/distribution connection between a home and the headend or optical network unit.

  • Patent number: 8437410
Abstract: Devices, systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with clipping instructions are described. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a clipping instruction for clipping filtered values in a video image de-blocking operation. The clipping instruction references a video data value and a clipping value. The method includes decoding the clipping instruction. The method also includes retrieving the video data value and the clipping value. A video data magnitude of the video data value is determined. The method determines a clipping magnitude of the clipping value. A determination is made as to whether the video data magnitude exceeds the clipping magnitude. If the video data magnitude exceeds the clipping magnitude, the video data value is selectively clipped.

  • Patent number: 8406254
Abstract: A content server is configured to buffer and transmit numerous live media streams to individual devices. The content server analyzes characteristics associated with the live media streams to determine timing and sequence number information. Other characteristics such as network congestion metrics, device buffer usage metrics, etc., can also be evaluated. Combined peak transmission times are determined to allow packets designated for transmission at a bandwidth usage peak to be transmitted earlier in time. Earlier packets are shifted even earlier as sequence numbers allow. This evens out bandwidth usage rates and allows improved live media stream transmission.

  • Patent number: 8391295
Abstract: Techniques for routing client requests among a group of nodes offering a service are described. A coordinator determines that performance could be improved by using affinity-based routing. In one embodiment, the coordinator calculates a Time-to-Live (TTL) metric whereby clients benefit by returning to the same cache and posts this hint to subscribers. Client's start preserving locality data in an affinity context, such that later requests for a connection can be routed to the location last visited. The coordinator measures the system over subsequent intervals. If the gradient of the goodness (viz service quality and capacity) is stable or improving, then the coordinator continues to advise subscribers to use the affinity-based technique. Alternatively, if the gradient of the goodness is deteriorating, then the coordinator posts advice to the subscribers to stop using the affinity-based technique for any instance during the next intervals.

  • Patent number: 8385227
Abstract: A base round trip time (RTT) for a path in a network is determined. The RTT along a network path between a source node and a destination node is measured one or more times. A sample set of fitting parameters based on a distribution of historical queue delays is obtained. A Monte Carlo simulation is performed using the fitting parameters in the sample set to generate a distribution of queue delays for the measured network path. A base RTT for the network path is determined using the measured RTT and the distribution of queue delays.
