Patent number: 4408471Abstract: An electronic adaptive control system for use with hydraulic press brakes to provide compensation for material spring back to accurately produce a desired bend angle in the work piece with a single ram stroke. Fixed input parameters associated with the press brake and material properties, together with ram position and force data are continuously input to a digital computer which calculates the precise point of punch penetration necessary to reverse ram movement in order to produce the desired bend angle in the work piece. By using in-process measurements, a significant savings in machine set-up-time can be achieved in order to produce an accurate bend angle in the work piece the first time and every time.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1980Date of Patent: October 11, 1983Assignee: Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyInventors: David C. Patent number: 4406147Abstract: An apparatus for bending a pipe about a fixed forming member serving as abutment has members gripping the pipe externally as well as two mandrels intended to come inside the pipe. Each mandrel has an end piece movably carried by one end, the end pieces being against each other inside the pipe at the beginning of bending. During the initial bending phase, each end piece is urged outwards from the bending center to expand the pipe to such an extent that after terminating bending, the pipe is given a circular cross section subsequent to a certain amount of return spring of the pipe wall.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1981Date of Patent: September 27, 1983Assignee: A.O. Patent number: 4406148Abstract: A multi-station strip metal forming press has a safety release mechanism for the transfer slide to protect the press components in the event of a jam or internal breakage. A press frame has a plurality of horizontally spaced work stations and supports a vertically reciprocable ram; a plurality of tools carried by and movable with the ram, positioned to be operatively disposed at the stations and cooperate with dies thereat to perform work on workpieces positioned at the work stations. A horizontally movable transfer slide and associated transfer rails are provided for carrying workpieces sequentially in a predetermined manner to the stations. A powered mechanism reciprocates said transfer slide and ram in timed relationship. A safety release mechanism for the transfer slide operatively disconnects the powered mechanism from said transfer slide on the occurrence of a jam anywhere in the press regardless of the point in the cycle of press operation or position of the jam and causes the transfer slide to stop.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1981Date of Patent: September 27, 1983Assignee: The U.S. Baird CorporationInventor: David W. Patent number: 4404743Abstract: Apparatus and method for fabricating a multi-wire harness assembly are disclosed. The harness consists of wires which are first terminated en masse on one level, then loaded en masse into a connector block on a conveyor at a lower level. Wires are then fed to diverse lengths, cut and stripped, and the trailing ends are transported on a conveyorized clamp which parallels the connector block clamp. The apparatus utilizes a shuttle having telescoping wire guide tubes which are directed by a pivotable track first to an operating zone for termination. The shuttle has a clamping mechanism so that the terminated leads are drawn into the expanding tubes as the shuttle retreats. The track then pivots to the level of the connector, the shuttle moves against the connector block to load the terminated leads, and the clamp is released as the shuttle retreats from the block over the wires.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1981Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventors: Joseph E. Patent number: 4403495Abstract: An apparatus for bending an elongate member with a pair of spaced parallel planar flanges which normally extend from the planar web to form a channel section. The apparatus includes a platen shaped for close fitting engagement with the exterior web and flange faces of the elongate member in a region where the elongate member is bent. The platen also includes a counter-pressure member, one surface of which engages the exterior face of the web of the elongate member in the bending region. The counter-pressure member is capable of being selectively advanced or retracted within the platen. A movable head member shaped for close fitting engagement with the interior web and flange faces of the elongate member in the bending region has projections which apply a force in the bending region acting in the planes of the flanges on longitudinally spaced portions of the elongate member for relative displacement of the portions.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1981Date of Patent: September 13, 1983Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventor: Terence R. Patent number: 4403496Abstract: A tube bender construction for manual operation in bending a tube. The tube bender includes a mandrel defining a bending groove into which the tube is urged by a forming member mounted to the mandrel to swing about a bending axis of the bending groove. The tube to be bent is held against longitudinal movement during the bending operation by tube-holding structure arranged to clamp the tube against an extended groove portion of the mandrel. Movement of the forming member about the bending axis is effected by manipulation of a pair of handles which are arranged in offset manner to permit crossover of the handles and avoid interference between the user's hands thereon in the tube bending operation. The mandrel further defines an extension adapted for mounting thereof in a vise or the like. The handle connected to the mandrel is removably connected thereto as for removal when the mandrel is vise-mounted.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1981Date of Patent: September 13, 1983Assignee: Imperial Clevite Inc.Inventor: Leonard J. Patent number: 4402203Abstract: This invention provides an installation tool for a fastener that includes a nut and a tubular portion having an external knurl, the tool including an internally and externally threaded sleeve, a screw extending through the sleeve and engageable with the nut of the fastener, and an internally threaded element engaging the external threads of the sleeve and having an abutment surface at one end. Advancement of the internally threaded element causes the screw to move the fastener axially, forcing its tubular portion into an opening in a workpiece. The sleeve has a die surface at one end and is then advanced to engage the end of the tubular portion of the fastener for bending it outwardly to form a flange.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1982Date of Patent: September 6, 1983Assignee: Deutsch Fastener Corp.Inventor: Jorge W. Patent number: 4400932Abstract: A jewelry link in the form of an elongated loop capable of holding and displaying a number of precious stones or the like. The link has a closed U-shaped ring at one end and a corresponding hole at the other end, so that the ring of one link may be inserted into the hole of an adjacent link. Each link has a deformable hook secured adjacent the ring-receiving hole, so that when the U-shaped ring of an adjacent link is inserted in the hole, the two links can be locked together by pressing the deformable hook so that it interlocks with the inserted ring. By this means links can be added to a bracelet or necklace as the wearer is able to purchase them; and in similar fashion additional precious stones can be added to each link as desired.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1982Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Kaspar & Esh, Inc.Inventor: Elias Epstein
