  • Patent number: 11760338
Abstract: A vehicle control apparatus to be applied to a hybrid vehicle includes a continuously variable transmission, a clutch mechanism, and a travel processor. The continuously variable transmission is coupled to an engine and a first motor via an input passage, and coupled to drive wheels via an output passage. The clutch mechanism is provided on the output passage. When the travel mode is switched from a first mode in which the clutch mechanism is engaged to the second mode in which the clutch mechanism is released, the travel processor releases the clutch mechanism and stops the continuously variable transmission while maintaining a speed ratio of the continuously variable transmission. When the travel mode is switched from the second mode to the first mode, the travel processor synchronizes rotation speeds of input-side and output-side portions of the clutch mechanism by controlling the continuously variable transmission, and engages the clutch mechanism.

  • Patent number: 11761377
Abstract: An energy transfer machine includes a piston and cylinder. The piston can have a rocking motion as it enters and exits the cylinder, for example due to one being on a rotor and the other on a stator. The piston and cylinder form a primary chamber, and as they move relative to each other can form a seal separating the primary chamber into first and second sub-chambers which then unseals before the piston exits the cylinder. The first sub-chamber may reach a maximum geometric compression ratio, for example for the purpose of compression ignition, before the unsealing of the sub-chambers.

  • Patent number: 11754014
Abstract: Vehicle designers are largely walking away from internal-combustion engines to battery and electric motors. Until infrastructure is developed to support total electrification, hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) which include both an internal combustion engine and an electric machine are a step toward electrification and higher system fuel efficiency while retaining the expected vehicle range. To obtain even higher system fuel efficiency combustion modes that provide higher efficiency than spark-ignition (SI) operation can be used in HEVs. A problem with such combustion modes is that they cannot be used over as wide an operating range as SI operation and transitions among modes is slow and cumbersome. By having the ICE installed into a HEV be a multi-combustion mode engine and having the EM to coordinate mode switches to be smooth, the high fuel-efficiency of alternative combustion modes can be exploited while providing smooth operation expected by vehicle users.

  • Patent number: 11739686
Abstract: In some embodiments, a fuel temperature sensor is located proximate to a vehicle component that is expected to experience fuel gelling, such as near or within a fuel filter, in order to obtain temperature information that accurately reflects the likelihood of fuel gelling occurring within the component. The proximate fuel temperature sensor can provide more accurate temperature information for components such as fuel filters that are installed at the periphery of the vehicle, compared to other temperature sensors that measure oil temperatures or other temperatures of centrally located vehicle components. In some embodiments, the vehicle is automatically started when the temperature indicated by the fuel temperature sensor falls below a startup temperature threshold value, and is automatically stopped after a predetermined time period or after the temperature reaches a shutdown temperature threshold value.
