  • Patent number: 4558769
Abstract: A marine drive for a boat includes a torque converter between the engine and propulsion unit. The torque converter has a slip condition in which a torque magnifying, fluid coupling is interposed between the engine and the propulsion unit. The slip of the torque converter enhances acceleration of the boat by permitting rapid increases in engine speed and power through relieving propeller loading of the engine. The torque converter has a lock-up condition in which the input and output shafts are directly and mechanically coupled together to provide highly efficient, sustained speed operation of the boat. A control operates the torque converter between the slip and lock-up conditions. This control may be obtained responsive to operating conditions in the engine or torque converter, such as engine speed, torque converter slip, throttle position, intake manifold vacuum, and engine ignition advance.

  • Patent number: 4557357
Abstract: A mechanism (19 or 200) disposed in a torque converter housing (24) for damping torsionals in a vehicle driveline. The mechanism (19) comprises a viscous coupling (22) including a housing (64) having two sidewalls (24a, 68) defining a chamber (70) containing a viscous liquid, and a clutch member (72) disposed in the chamber for viscous clutching coaction with the housing. One of the sidewalls (24a) is defined by an end wall of the torque converter housing. The housing and clutch member are interconnected by a spring assembly (20) including flat torsion springs (61, 62) which transmit steady-state driveline torque and isolate driveline torsionals. The inner surfaces (24b, 68a) of housing (64) each include two circumferentially spaced clutching surfaces separated by the clutch member. The clutch member has oppositely facing surfaces (72b, 72c) each which include two flat circumferentially spaced clutching surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4556132
Abstract: An electromotive control drive mechanism, in particular for industrial sewing machines, comprises a continuously drivable motor and a brake/clutch unit connected therewith. A clutch disk connected in a rotationally fixed manner with a driven shaft can, by axial movement and by overcoming a clutch air gap, be brought into frictional engagement with a clutch support which is connected in a rotationally fixed manner with the rotor of the motor. A brake disk connected in a rotationally fixed manner with the driven shaft can be brought into frictional engagement with a brake support which is rotationally fixed. A clutch coil and a brake coil are also provided. In order to reduce the expense of the brake/clutch unit without burdensome actuation noises arising, only one clutch/brake disk is provided, and mechanisms are provided for adjusting the clutch air gap and the automatic readjustment of the clutch air gap.

  • Patent number: 4553654
Abstract: An installation for the control of a motor vehicle drive unit which includes a reciprocating piston engine, a hydraulically actuated clutch and a transmission. A drive pedal pick-up controls the throttle valve and therewith the engine torque by way of a first characteristic curve converter while it applies a signal by way of a second characteristic curve converter a to a control apparatus, to which is also fed at the same time the engine rotational speed n. The control apparatus forms the product a.multidot.n.sup.2 and applies the same as output signal to the electromagnetic actuating mechanism of the hydraulic clutch so that the pressure thereof and also the torque in the clutch is proportional to the product a.multidot.n.sup.2.

  • Patent number: 4552256
Abstract: A clutch system which provides an automatic coupling between an engine and a driven mechanism comprises a fluid-type servomotor connected to the clutch unit. The servomotor fluid passes through a circulation system comprising a progressively variable orifice, the cross-sectional area of which depends both on the position of the accelerator pedal and on the position of the clutch. A branch pipe placed in parallel with the circulation system is closed by a device which opens when the measured engine speed exceeds a predetermined threshold value. The branch pipe is provided with a second variable orifice which has a larger opening than the first and operates under the same conditions in order to increase the speed of clutch engagement.

  • Patent number: 4550814
Abstract: In a clutch-and-brake unit for use with a continuously rotating, motor-driven shaft, for example in an industrial sewing machine, a single disk has a clutch surface on one side and a brake surface on the other side. The disk is magnetically urged into operative engagement with clutch and brake pressure plates facing the respective clutch and brake surfaces of the disk, the clutch pressure plate being rotated by the motor-driven shaft to rotate the disk and a shaft connected thereto when operatively engaged, and the brake pressure plate being non-rotatable to brake the shaft. The brake pressure plate is also constantly urged into light contact with the brake surface sufficient to brake the disk and shaft only when the disk is not operatively engaged with the clutch pressure plate. This prevents the disk and connected shaft from rotating when neither the clutch nor the brake are operatively engaged and eliminates engagement noise when the brake pressure plate is operatively engaged.

  • Patent number: 4548099
Abstract: The transmission comprises a hydraulic power transmission device, a V-belt stepless shifter and a planetary gear train. At restart time when the vehicle is at rest with the V-belt stepless shifter in high gear, the hydraulic power transmission device is operated to shift for providing a relatively high torque ratio, rather than the V-belt stepless shifter. A smooth restart is thus made possible. In addition, the planetary gear train permits the shifter smoothly to switch between forward and reverse. Both features meet the transmission needs of all vehicles.

  • Patent number: 4548305
Abstract: A torque overload release clutch comprises an input, intermediate and output assemblies drivingly interconnected for rotation. A plurality of spline balls interconnects the input assembly with the intermediate assembly. A plurality of main balls disengagably, drivingly interconnects the intermediate assembly to the output assembly. Helical springs provide a reference force. When the axial force due to the applied torque exceeds the reference force, the main balls pivot and rotate so as to disengage the intermediate assembly from the output assembly by kicking the intermediate assembly axially. A latch comprising a dilating ring of balls can maintain the intermediate assembly in the disengaged position. Further, the latch balls can assume an intermediate position between the engaged and disengaged positions which facilitates resetting of the clutch.

  • Patent number: 4546671
Abstract: A valve actuator has an electric driving motor for driving an output shaft through reduction gearing and a manual operator for driving the output shaft manually. A drive transfer device for transferring the drive from the electric motor to the manual operating means incorporates an electric switch which is operated by the initial movement of a manual operator of the drive transfer device to cause the motor if rotating to be brought to a stop. Continued movement of the manual operator causes the drive transfer device to transfer the drive to the output shaft from the electric motor to the manual operator. The drive transfer device advantageously includes a clutch between the motor shaft and a worm shaft forming part of the reduction gear. The driven clutch member may form an integral part of a unit which is slidable as a sleeve along the worm shaft but is keyed for rotation to the worm shaft, the unit also having a pinion for meshing with a drive gear forming part of the hand drive.
