  • Patent number: 4828137
Abstract: According to this invention, there is provided a method and apparatus for making an article, such as a lid for a plastic food container made of plastic having frangible score lines. The article is formed of a sheet of plastic material having substantially constant thickness with score lines defining an offset portion thereof which is connected to the remaining sheet material by a segment that is thinner than said sheet material and being rupturable for the removal of said offset portion. The periphery of the inwardly directed portion of said offset portion overlaps the periphery of the outwardly directed portion of the offset portion on the opposite side of said sheet material. The fracturable score lines are corrugated along their length by a plurality of successive grooves and ridges with the grooves extending deeper into the material than the ridges.

  • Patent number: 4826038
Abstract: A rotatable container assembly for use in surface treatment of particulate workpieces includes a container having opposed head ends and a side member defining a work cavity therein. An aperture is formed in a minor portion of the side member and a door arranged for opening and closing relation with the aperture. Means for imparting generally arcuate movement and generally radial movement advances and retracts the door between open and closed positions. Preferably, the movement imparting means includes a cam slot and cam follower arranged between a driven gear and a closely adjacent end plate. Push blocks assist in selective rotation of the container both relative to and with the door. Plural locking slots are arranged on the periphery of the end plate for operative engagement with a lock member extending from the gear.

  • Patent number: 4826029
Abstract: In accordance with the invention a frustoconically shaped stopper formed of silicone rubber approved by the FDA for use in wine making (such as methylvinylpolysiloxane elastomers) can be releasably sealed to a wine barrel, but still provide for sampling of the wine and/or release of the fermentation gases. In this way, all equipment needed for venting, heating and tasting wine can be placed and used in a convenient arrangement with minimum expenditure of time and effort. In one aspect, the stopper of the invention includes a central opening attended by an integral pliant plug having a shaft of length L.sub.0. The central opening is defined by a circular cross section and a length L (measured between an annular base and a truncated tip surface) where L.sub.0 is less than L. A side wall of thickness T is defined. The thickness T varies as a function of the length along the central opening. The side wall is rigid, however.

  • Patent number: 4823976
Abstract: A quick actuating closure for a pressure vessel 80 in which a wedge ring 30 with a conical outer surface 31 is moved forward to force shear blocks 40, with conical inner surfaces 41, radially outward to lock an end closure plug 70 within an opening 81 in the pressure vessel 80. A seal ring 60 and a preload ramp 50 sit between the shear blocks 40 and the end closure plug 70 to provide a backup sealing capability. Conical surfaces 44 and 55 of the preload ramp 50 and the shear blocks 40 interact to force the seal ring 60 into shoulders 73 and 85 in the end closure plug 70 and opening 81 to form a tight seal. The end closure plug 70 is unlocked by moving the wedge ring 30 rearward, which causes "T"-bars 32 of the wedge ring 30 riding within "T" -slots 42 of the shear blocks 40 to force them radially inward. The end closure plug 70 is then removed, allowing access to the interior of the pressure vessel 80.

  • Patent number: 4821898
Abstract: A hinged dispensing closure of unitary molded construction is disclosed which may be readily opened by an adult using one hand. A narrow slot of short length is molded near the periphery of the top wall of the snap-hinged cover cap opposite its hinged connection to the main closure. The sidewall of the cover cap includes axially extending parallel score lines from near its skirt edge to the ends of the slot to define a tab. Pressing by the thumb on the tab while holding the package in the same hand ruptures the scores and deflects the tab inwardly for ready access to an exposed edge of the formed slot; and pressure on the edge opens the cover cap. The deflected tab is held by an internal cam wall inwardly of the slot, which indicates that the package is opened when the tab is held in this deflected position. A second embodiment provides a hook and latch locking means between the main closure and cover cap opposite the hinge.

  • Patent number: 4819821
Abstract: A cylindrical-shaped rigid inner storage tank with substantially flattened ends is jacketed in a manner which results in storage tank system capable of holding detecting liquid or being placed under non-atmospheric pressure without structural damage. The rigid inner tank initially has end plates mounted on its flattened ends. Thereafter, a separating agent is applied over the side walls of the storage tank, a layer of fibrous reinforcing material applied on the separating agent and the end plates, and a resinous material applied. The resultant jacket is independent from the side walls of the inner tank. True secondary containment is provided by the jacket. A fail safe containment storage tank system is provided by the use of a leak detection means to monitor the closed space between the storage tank and jacket for tank or jacket leakage.

  • Patent number: 4819825
Abstract: Disclosed is a container and closure assembly including a container having a substantially circular opening and an outer wall containing an upper retention bead and a lower, regularly-outwardly extending security ring. The closure includes a one-piece plastic body having a top panel and an encircling skirt depending from the top panel so as to be integrally attached thereto. The skirt includes a groove for locking engagement with the retention bead to retain the closure on the container. A circumferential line of weakness in the skirt wall defines a removable tear strip having a movable free edge and which is removable from an upper portion of the skirt wall by fracturing the skirt wall along the upper line of weakness. A tear strip is weakened so as to form a plurality of circumferentially-spaced segments throughout the substantial entirety of its periphery. The segments are separable one from another in response to a prying or wedging force applied to the tear strip at the free edge thereof.
