  • Patent number: 8224304
Abstract: Methods and systems for disambiguating entries within a contacts listing database of a mobile device detect newly created contact records having a same data element (e.g., a telephone number) and alert the user. Other contact records storing the same data element may be identified. Matching contact records may be grouped and provided a group label so that when a call is received from a member of the group, the mobile device can identify the caller using the group label. Call logs can similarly be disambiguated by informing a user when a call has been made to or received from a number that matches values in data fields of more than one contact record and enabling the user to edit or augment information recorded in the call log to properly reflect the identity of the other party to the call.

  • Patent number: 8224291
Abstract: A system, method, and computer readable medium for terminating calls in a network system is provided. The communication system features an IP-based femtocell system for provisioning communication services to a user equipment. The femtocell system is provisioned with a list of electronic serial numbers of user equipments that are authorized to access the femtocell system. When a call is received by the femtocell system, the femtocell system determines a directory number of a user equipment to which the call is directed. If the destination user equipment is authorized to access the femtocell system and is currently within the service area of the femtocell system, the call setup may be completed by the femtocell system without any call setup signaling being transmitted to a core telecommunication network.

  • Patent number: 8208978
Abstract: A miniaturized attachment mechanism for attaching a lanyard to a cell phone, MP3 player or other portable device having a hole in its outer casing is disclosed. The miniaturized attachment mechanism can have one end permanently fastened to a lanyard, and can include a spring-loaded ball detent within a hollow shaft. The hollow shaft diameter can be about 3 millimeters or less, while the diameter of the ball within the hollow shaft can be about 2 millimeters or less. The hollow shaft can be inserted into the casing hole such that the ball detent secures the mechanism to the casing until a pin release is used. In another embodiment, the miniaturized attachment mechanism can include a 1 millimeter shaft having a groove at an insertable end, while the casing encloses a two hole E-ring mechanism adapted to lock onto the groove when the shaft is inserted into the casing hole.

  • Patent number: 8200188
Abstract: A system and method to determine excessive usage across a base station coverage region for the purpose of ensuring fair usage for all wireless data subscribers. During a configurable time window, subscriber usage is monitored. Subscriber usage above a threshold level is deemed excessive and triggers an operator-defined business rule. Based on the business rule, the subscriber's service may be reduced. The system and method adapts to the number of subscribers within the base station coverage region when making an excessive usage determination. This approach enables bursty data protocols to be fully supported, while detecting excessive usage patterns.

  • Patent number: 8160623
Abstract: Methods, media, and systems are provided for delivering short messaging service (SMS) messages via a satellite radio network are provided. A cellular-satellite gateway (CSG) server is coupled to both the network of a terrestrial cellular telecommunications provider and to the network of a satellite radio provider. Once a requisite number of unsuccessful attempts for delivery have been made by the elements of the cellular network, the SMS message is forwarded to the CSG server. The CSG sends the text message to a specified satellite radio network. The satellite radio network broadcasts the text message so that it may be received by a satellite radio enabled device. Messages are filtered at the mobile device to ensure only the intended recipient receives the text message. Acknowledgment is sent the next time the mobile device connects to its cellular network.

  • Patent number: 8155699
Abstract: A communication apparatus comprises read-out means for reading out identification information from each of a plurality of storage media each storing identification information about a communication line; communication means for determining communication lines corresponding to the plurality of storage media based on the identification information read out from the plurality of storage media by the read-out means and performing communication with a base station using one of the plurality of determined communication lines; and control means for controlling the communication means to execute a search process of searching for a base station communicable with the communication means at an interval determined for each of the determined communication lines.

  • Patent number: 8145207
Abstract: An apparatus and method for avoiding interference between a base station and a relay station when using full duplex relay in a multi-hop relay wireless communication system are provided. An operation of a mobile station includes measuring an strength of a receive signal from a base station and an strength of a receive signal from an relay station, calculating a receive signal strength ratio of base station to relay station by dividing the strength of the receive signal from the base station by the strength of the receive signal from the relay station, determining if interference occurs using the receive signal strength ratio, and transmitting a control message representing if interference occurs.

  • Patent number: 8027683
Abstract: A communication system comprises a first radio network supporting a first air interface standard and a second radio network supporting a second air interface standard. The second radio network comprises a network interface 401 which receives a handover request message from the first radio network to hand over a remote station 101 to the second network. A handover preference processor 405 receives a handover preference message including a preference indication for a radio network for the remote station. A load processor 409 determines a load indication for the second radio network and a load threshold processor 407 determines a handover load threshold for the remote station in response to the preference indication. A handover evaluation processor 403 determines whether to accept the handover in response to a comparison of the load indication and the handover load threshold.

  • Patent number: 8000727
Abstract: A communication system wherein a wireless communication device optically receives an image of a location, processes the image to obtain image data, and transmits the image data and wireless communication device user information to a communication network as a control request. A server receives the control request and processes the image data and user information to determine the location. The server then processes the location to determine contact information for an authorizing party and transfers an authorization request to the authorizing party. If the server receives authorization from the authorizing party, then the server transfers a control interface to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication device receives a control instruction responsive to the control interface and transfers a control message to the server. The server receives the control message and transfers the control message to a control system at the location. The control system implements the control instruction.
