  • Patent number: 4685757
Abstract: A connector for connecting electrical wire comprises electrically conductive blade means having an elongated edge, guide means for guiding a wire inserted into the connector past the blade means, and retaining means for retaining the free end of the wire if doubled back and reinserted into the connector on the opposed side of the blade means. The bend formed in the wire engages the blade edge and is drawn therealong if the wire is pulled back to create a slicing action through the wire's insulator which produces a very clean high integrity electrical engagement of the wire's conductive core with the blade edge. Means are provided for wedging the bend formed in the wire tightly against the blade edge if the wire is pulled back to effect a secure mechanical connection of the wire to the blade means.

  • Patent number: 4682918
Abstract: A keyless chuck for a power drill having a drive spindle projecting from the drill housing. The chuck body is fixed on and rotatable with the spindle and has a plurality of jaws mounted for movement on axes inclined with respect to the spindle axis. The collar is mounted for rotation with and with respect to said body and has a split nut connected to the jaws to move them on said axes to grip or release a tool shank when there is relative rotation between said collar and said body. A ring is splined on the housing and is spring biased toward the housing. The ring is manually movable toward the collar to bring the axially projecting lugs on the ring in engagement with lugs on the collar to retard the collar from rotating which causes relative rotation between the body and the collar when the body is rotated. Inclined faces on the lugs force the lugs apart when movement of the jaws is prevented and the lugs cause an impacting action to overcome static friction.

  • Patent number: 4676704
Abstract: An apparatus for connection to a machine tool having a rotating head and a fixed part is capable of automatically moving a cutting tool radially while a spindle carrying the cutting tool rotates. The apparatus includes a body which is engageable to the tool machine so as to remain fixed with respect to a central axis. A spindle is rotatably mounted to the body and is connected to the head of the tool machine for rotation. A slide holder is fixed to the spindle and carries a toolholder for sliding movement in a radial direction with respect to the central axis. An electric motor is mounted in the non-rotating body and drives a gear train which can radially move the toolholder while the spindle, slide holder and toolholder rotate. A position transducer is engaged with the electric motor for determining its position and thus the position of the toolholder on the spindle.

  • Patent number: 4675976
Abstract: A plain grinding machine wherein a grinding unit with a spindle for grinding wheels is reciprocable along the bed and is indexible about a vertical axis to transfer work holders between one or more indexible turrets or a magazine and a socket which is reciprocably mounted on the bed. The spindle of the grinding unit can further carry and rotate a clamping device for a workpiece to be treated by the internal grinding wheel of a holder which is separably secured to the socket. The clamping device can be stored in a second magazine which further serves for storage of one or more tool holders or tools. The grinding unit, the socket and each holder has clamping elements which can separably secure a holder to the socket, to the magazine or to the grinding unit. The control unit of the grinding machine transmits signals for actuation of the grinding unit when the latter is used as a manipulator to transfer holders between the socket and a turret or between the second magazine and the spindle.

  • Patent number: 4669927
Abstract: A deep hole drilling machine having a drill headstock and a drilling carriage, and a drill guide carriage disposed between them, at least two of these three units being displaceable on the machine bed, and the workpiece and/or the drill tube being rotatable. This machine is designed such that differences in workpiece or drill lengths, workpiece inaccuracies and different hole starting and hole finishing movements can be provided for automatically. This is accomplished by providing a length measuring system on each of the displaceable units; the reading made by each measuring system will depend on the position of its unit with respect to a reference point on the fixed unit. A comparator compares the relative positions of the displaceable units, while an evaluating circuit is provided for controlling the movement of at least one of the units on the basis of the readings made after the workpiece and the drill have been inserted into the machine.

  • Patent number: 4669933
Abstract: A chuck for a cylindrical, rotary, metal cutting tool, such as an end mill, is provided with a liquid coolant system. The chuck has a stationary, annular collar within which a tool holder rotates at high speed. An annular channel is defined between the collar and the tool holder and liquid coolant is pumped into the collar to the channel through an inlet on the collar. Internal ducts within the tool holder are directed inwardly at an angle from the annular channel toward an end face from which a rotary tool, such as an end mill protrudes. The ducts are also oriented at an angle corresponding to the helical spiral of flutes on the end mill and are radially aligned with troughs between the flutes. Liquid coolant, such as water, is forced from the annular channel through the ducts toward the troughs between the flutes. The liquid coolant travels all the way to the tip of the end mill to cool the bit and wash chips of metal therefrom with a minimum of water being thrown from the end mill by centrifugal force.

  • Patent number: 4669932
Abstract: A keyless tool chuck is disclosed which may be used with most power tools having standard chucks. The jaws of the chuck are displaced and retracted by controlling the rotation of a threaded collar which surrounds the jaws relative to the rotation of the tool shaft and the jaws. This rotation is controlled by displacing a plate so as to control rotation of the collar in a first embodiment. In a second embodiment, rotation of the chuck collar is controlled by a clutch means, and in a third embodiment the rotation of the chuck collar is controlled relative to the jaws by means of vanes which are inserted into a grooved cylinder attached to the chuck collar.

  • Patent number: 4666167
Abstract: An elastic stress bushing comprising profiled prominences disposed at isoed locations, said profiled prominences having outer stressing surfaces, whereby the presence of the profiled prominences does not detract from the elastic properties of the overall stress bushing. This is achieved by providing for outwardly open grooves and at least one inwardly open groove on each bushing, which grooves are delimited by annular web segments and cylindrical stress covers. When the elastic bushing is compressed axially, it expands outward radially. In this way, the elastic bushing may support a workpiece, tool, hollow flywheel or sprocket, etc. from within the interior surface(s) of these structures.
