Patent number: 5755417Abstract: A locking mechanism for releasably locking a rotatable arm 3 to a generally cylindrical axle or wheel 6. The mechanism comprises a slot 7 extending around a region of the axle 6, the slot having first and second abutment surfaces spaced apart in the direction of said movement. A heel member 17, rigidly fixed to the arm 3, projects from the arm into the slot and provides third and fourth spaced apart abutment surfaces 19,27, said third abutment surface 19 being arranged to engage said first abutment surface 18 to prevent rotation of the axle 6 in a first direction. A locking wedge 21 is provided which is moveable between a first release position in which the wedge lies outside the slot 7 and a second locking position in which the wedge projects into the slot to engage said second abutment surface 10 of the slot and said fourth abutment surface 27 of the heel member 17 to prevent rotation of the axle 6 in a second direction opposite to said first direction.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1995Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Assignee: Pilkington P.E. Patent number: 5746407Abstract: A tripod includes a vertically movable center column dividable into an upper column member and a lower column member. A lower flange on a lower end of the lower column member prevents the center column from slipping off the tripod when fully extended. When a user removes the lower column member for an activity such as low-angle photography, a number of stopper protrusions prevent the upper column member from slipping off the tripod. When the user reattaches the lower column member, the stopper protrusions disengage to permit free movement of the center column. The present invention thus allows low-angle photography, provides a wide range of vertical motion of the center column, and prevents the user from accidentally damaging a camera when the lower column member is removed.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1996Date of Patent: May 5, 1998Assignee: Nihon Velbon Seiki Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Koichiro Nakatani

Patent number: 5713543Abstract: A portable stand is disclosed that vertically stabilizes an object upon a supporting surface. In one embodiment, the stand comprises a sleeve that has a vertical axis and defines an interior region that is adapted to receive the object. A plurality of supporting members are radially disposed about the sleeve, each member having a proximate and a distal end. Each member is pivotly mounted to the sleeve and biased in a retracted position. In the retracted position, the proximate end of each member radially and inwardly extends in the interior of the sleeve. The members remain in the retracted position when the stand is not on a supporting surface. The stand also comprises an actuator that has a contacting surface. The actuator is adapted to slide axially within the sleeve and is biased in a downward position by gravity. In the downward position, the contacting surface is positioned below each proximate end. The actuator remains in the downward position when the stand is not on the supporting surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1995Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Inventors: William C. Ruth, Robert I. Patent number: 5709362Abstract: The present invention relates to semi-trailer support legs. In order to avoid damage to trailer support legs by failure to raise the legs when the trailer is coupled to a towing unit for movement, the present invention provides a pivotal foot at the end of the support leg and an actuator for controlling pivotal movement of the foot between a raised position providing sufficient clearance for normal operation and a deployed position for supporting the trailer on uncoupling of the towing unit. More particularly raising and lowering of the pivotal foot is controlled automatically on coupling and uncoupling respectively of the towing unit and trailer.A particularly convenient arrangement results where actuation of the foot is responsive to the connection and disconnection of a control line between the towing and trailer units. More particularly still, the control line is the emergency brake line which would be connected as a matter of course. The actuator is supplied from a branch off said emergency brake line.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Pandoro LimitedInventors: Martin Robert Clarke, Philip Pye, Norman Zoltan Wignall
