Abstract: Improved cigarette lighter apparatus for combined use with cigarette packages of the "flip-top" type or, in one embodiment, with cases for cigarette packages, includes a member for supporting a lighter device, which supporting member is adapted to be removably affixed to a conventional "flip-top" cigarette package in a manner such that upon the contents of the cigarette package being exhausted, the supporting member can be removed therefrom and removably affixed to another conventional cigarette package, and a lighter device mounted on the supporting member. In this embodiment, the supporting member includes a sleeve portion adapted conveniently to fit over a portion of a conventional "flip-top" cigarette package and a lighter supporting cover portion hingedly connected to the sleeve portion. The lighter device may alternately be permanently or removably mounted on the supporting member.

Abstract: A smoker's pipe comprises a bowl portion having a tobacco-receiving cavity below which is formed a transverse, tapering socket. A passageway interconnects the cavity with the socket. A tapering end portion of a stem part is a friction push-fit into the socket whereby the bowl portion can be rotated about the end portion of the stem part. The stem part includes a bore communicating directly with, and forming an extension of, the passageway. A primary reservoir in the lower regions of the bowl portion communicates with the bore and the passageway but is not in the direct path between the bore and the passageway, thereby keeping to a minimum the internal surface area of the pipe between the cavity and the bore. Thus the primary reservoir stores unwanted liquid in the pipe. Rotation of the bowl portion relative to the stem portion seals off the cavity from the reservoir and bore.

Abstract: Process for improving the fillability of tobacco, such as cut tobacco leaves or ribs and tobacco additives by treating the tobacco in an autoclave with a containing nitrogen and/or argon at pressures up to 1000 bar, with subsequent decompression and a gas heat treatment. The tobacco or the treatment gas supplied to the reactor and/or the decompression step are carried out in such a way that the discharged tobacco which is thereafter supplied to a subsequent heat treatment has a temperature, at introduction to the heat treatment step, below 0.degree. C. This is achieved by precooling the treatment gas prior to supplying it to the autoclave or cooling the treatment gas while supplying it to the autoclave and/or additionally cooling the autoclave and/or precooling the tobacco and/or injecting subcooled or liquefied treatment gas into the autoclave. The process includes multistage treatment gas whereby supply and decompression steps are carried out in a cascade-like manner.

Abstract: An anterior traction myotatic chin strap treats mandibular retrognathism by exciting the myotatic reflex action of mandibular advance, thereby producing the best conditions to stimulate the forward growth of the mandible to a maximum, this being the first objective in the treatment of mandibular retrognathism or Skeletal Class II Malocclusion, in which a poor mandibular growth in relation to the growth of the upper maxilla in the anteroposterior direction, is produced.

Abstract: A device for transferring rod-like articles, particularly cigarettes, from a rectilinear horizontal path to a rotary fluted drum having its axis of rotation substantially parallel to the rectilinear path. The device has two main rotary elements which rotate on two fixed shafts and which are coupled by at least one pair of main double cranks each having an arm integral with two crank pins to form an articulated parallelogram type rotary system. A crank pin of at least one main double crank extends beyond the respective main rotary element and ends with an eccentric pin to form a pair of parallel orbiting axes which carry respective secondary rotary elements coupled by at least one pair of secondary double cranks to form a second articulated parallelogram type rotary system. The crank pin of at least one second double crank extends beyond the respective secondary rotary element to form an extension on which there is a pneumatic pick-up or a suction head.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing tobacco filters are provided. Tobacco filter components are placed on a tape of wrapping paper which has a larger edge-to-edge size than the circumference of the filter components. Said tape is guided around the filter components at its first part which is adjacent one of the edges to half wrap the filter component. Paste is applied to the first part surface which faces radially outwardly and then, the tape is guided around the filter components at its second part which is adjacent the other one of the edges to lap over said paste-applied first part.

Abstract: A cigarette with a tobacco rod (5,6) has at its buccal end a filter plug (10) and a hollow tubular core (8) with a cross wall (9) formed with orifices of a certain size and shape. Ventilating air drawn in through perforations (12) in a tipping wrapper (7) and through a porous inner wrapper (11) is mixed with smoke drawn through the tobacco rod and the mixture is sucked through the orifices (13) which promote particular mixing and pressure drop effects.

Abstract: A charging device for opening and delivering leaf-type material which includes a conveyor having an upper surface along which leaf-type material moves in a downstream direction of travel toward a discharge end, an opening mechanism adjacent the discharge end for establishing an arcuate path of travel along which a plurality of members move for intermittently successively underengagingly contacting and opening the leaf-type material during the movement thereof beyond the discharge end, and at least one mechanism downstream of the opening mechanism for establishing an arcuate path of travel along which a plurality of elements move for intermittently successively contacting and stripping, in opposition to the downstream direction of travel, the leaf-type material, and both the opening and stripping mechanisms being formed by a plurality of arcuately spaced elongated bars carried by end plates rotatable about associated axes in identical directions.

Abstract: A system for providing fire safety from burning ends of cigarettes includes a perforate tube with end caps, one of which has for receiving a cigarette there-through an aperture with a plurality of slits radiating from it; a cigarette so-received is held with burning end located in the perforate tube by a plurality of longitudinal ribs integrally protrusive along the perforate tube interior wall; the perforate tube perforations are arrayed in a plurality of circumferential rows; row to row spacing helps determine burning time of an unpuffed cigarette, which is extinguished after a short interval if unpuffed.

Abstract: A cigarette extinguisher designed to be secured more specifically over an automobile ash-tray. A cigarette-receiving tube is pivotally supported between the upright legs of a U-shape support for movement between a cigarette-extinguishing position and an extinguished cigarette-discharging position. The discharge end of the tube is bevelled and lies flat against the bight portion of the support in cigarette-extinguishing position, so as to close the tube. Once the cigarette is snuffed out, the tube is simply pivoted to a more inclined position, so that the extinguished cigarette will clear the bight portion and drop into the underlying ash-tray. A securing device is designed to fix the extinguisher in a plurality of positions to an ash-tray of the automobile type, depending on the shape of the ash-tray.

Abstract: A variable dilution filter cigarette is provided which includes a substantially cylindrical tobacco rod, an axially aligned, substantially cylindrical wrapped filter plug, and tipping paper which circumscribes the filter plug and joins the filter plug to the tobacco rod. The filter plug has first and second ends, which are open to permit the passage of air and smoke. The plug wrap is substantially air-impermeable and is divided into a mouth-end band, a central band, and a rod-end band having a first opening. The first and third bands are attached to the filter. The tipping paper is also substantially air-impermeable, circumscribes the filter plug, and extends from the mouth end of the filter plug to a position on the tobacco rod adjacent the rod end of the filter plug. The tipping paper is divided into first and second bands, the first band extending from the mouth end of the filter plug to a position overlying the rod-end band.

Abstract: An adapter assembly is provided for a medical instrument designed to apply a first legating clip which has a first exterior configuration. The adapter assembly is provided with an adapter member associated with each jaw of the instrument to accommodate a second ligating clip having a second exterior configuration different than that of the first clip. Each adapter member has a provision for engaging a portion of one of the jaws and the provision is provided for attaching the adapter assembly to at least one of the jaws in a fixed orientation with each adapter member extending beyond the tip of a jaws. Each adapter member includes a clip applying portion having a configuration adapted to cooperate with the other adapter member to receive, hold, and apply the second clip.

Abstract: Apparatus for making ventilated cigarettes, includes a first perforator which is not readily susceptible to control and is arranged to perforate the tipping paper by which cigarettes are joined to filter portions, or to perforate the completed filter cigarettes. A controllable perforator is arranged to form additional perforations in the tipping paper prior to assembly of the filter cigarettes; and a control circuit is arranged to control the controllable perforator in response to a porosity measuring device and/or in response to a cigarette dilution testing device.

Abstract: An apparatus for conveying cigarette-filled trays from at least one tray-filling device to the hopper of at least one cigarette-packaging machine, and for returning the emptied trays to the tray-filling device. In order to deliver the filled tray system fully automatically by a simple transport system without operators, and with the opened top directed downwardly, to the hopper of the packaging machine, the guide rail system of a container-conveying system which is known per se and which has a plurality of the electrically driven travel mechanisms is disposed between a dispatch station which is associated with the tray-filling device, and a receiving station which is associated with the packaging machine. Each of the travel mechanisms carries a receiving container which is designed to receive at least one tray.

Abstract: A cigarette rod making machine wherein the trimming device is movable toward or away from the suction conveyor on which the tobacco stream is formed so as to remove larger or smaller quantities of excess tobacco and to thereby influence the density of the resulting filler. The sidewalls of the tobacco channel which confines the tobacco stream on the suction conveyor have portions which are immediately adjacent to the trimming device and are movable therewith relative to the suction conveyor so that the positions of such portions of the sidewalls relative to the trimming device remain unchanged in all positions of the trimming device. The disc-shaped members establish a boundary between the excess of tobacco and the tobacco which is to form the filler, and the excess is removed by a rotary brush.

Abstract: A homogeneous tobacco stream is built upon an air-permeable conveyor in a channel which is adjacent to one side of the conveyor and is bounded by two sidewalls. Particles of tobacco are admitted against the concave side of an arcuate guide wall, whose discharge end is adjacent to the channel and remote from the one side of the conveyor, together with streams of compressed air which accelerate the particles of tobacco and transport them toward and beyond the discharge end of the guide wall. The concave side of the guide wall has three guide faces each of which directs a discrete partial stream of tobacco particles against a different portion of the one side of the conveyor whereon the particles are retained by suction.

Abstract: Apparatus for directly coupling a cigarette maker with a packing machine has a tray filling unit which stores empty trays at an upper level and filled trays at a lower level and receives cigarettes from the maker, a tray evacuating unit which stores empty trays at an upper level and filled trays at a lower level and evacuates the contents of filled trays by simultaneously changing the orientation of cigarettes by 180.degree., and a connecting system which delivers empty trays from the evacuating unit to the filling unit and delivers filled trays from the filling unit to the evacuating unit by simultaneously changing the orientation of the trays so as to compensate for changes in orientation during evacuation of cigarettes from the trays. The connecting system employs one or more upright rotary turrets with tray carriers at two levels and a motor which indexes the turret or turrets and the respective tray carriers through 90.degree. or 180.degree..
