Abstract: An orbital barrel finishing machine employs rotatable drums which are removable from the machine. A coupling member mounting a plurality of angularly spaced axially extending pins engages slots of a second coupling member to provide a rotational drive engagement for the removable drums. The orbital barrel finishing machine is employed as a component of an integrated automatic finishing system wherein the rotatable drums may be automatically removed from the machine, unloaded, loaded and returned to the machine.

Hydraulic pistons and cylinders maintain a yieldable resistance to turning of the pivot plates.
Abstract: The ammunition container is subdivided by partition walls into individual compartments. Such containers must be structured in such a manner that a cartridge belt can be easily laterally withdrawn from the container at the top thereof. For this purpose there are provided partition walls which are formed by a stationary rigid partition wall portion and a pivotable spring-type or resilient partition wall portion. The two partition wall portions are interconnected by a resilient member, such as a spring plate or leaf. Furthermore, the distance between the spring plates or leaves and the base member or floor of the container continually increases from one partition wall to the next-following partition wall in the direction towards the discharge or outlet opening of the ammunition container.

Abstract: An improvement to a drill bit sharpening apparatus in the form of a simple spacer that provides the space setting between a drill bit point and the surface of a grinding device. The spacer comprises an elongated strip made of hard material; the width of the strip is not uniform and diminishes at two portions of the strip. The slanting angle of the portions corresponds to the Z-distances travelled by a drill bit supporting member so as to accomplish the setting. The strip also has calibration marks on its surface corresponding to a set of drill bit diameters for a given point angle. The spacer completely replaces the disc shaped and rectangular shaped prior art spacers.
Abstract: A grinding machine wherein a column supports a vertically movable holder for the spindle of a grinding wheel and the dressing apparatus is mounted on the holder. The dressing apparatus has a carriage disposed at a level above the grinding wheel and movable up and down radially of the grinding wheel. The carriage has a forward extension for a follower which supports a pivotable carrier for two parallel or nearly parallel spindles each of which carries one or more dressing tools. The carrier is pivotable relative to the follower between a first position in which the first dressing tool is ready to treat the working surface of the grinding wheel and a second position in which the second dressing tool is ready to treat the working surface. Separate motors are provided to move the follower along the carriage, to move the carriage along the holder, to drive the spindles for the dressing tools, as well as to pivot the carrier relative to the follower.

Abstract: A numerically controlled profile grinding machine has a bed for a first carriage which supports an upright column and is reciprocable along a first horizontal path. The column supports a second carriage which is reciprocable thereon along a vertical second path and supports a turntable which is indexible about a horizontal axis. The turntable supports one or more work clamping devices which are indexible about second axes extending at right angles to and intersecting the first axis. The base further supports a carriage for one or more tool supporting units each of which is movable along a second horizontal path at right angles to the first path and has a turntable indexible about a vertical axis and supporting one or more spindles for grinding wheels as well as a dressing apparatus for grinding wheels. Alternatively, each tool supporting unit can be mounted on a discrete carriage.
Abstract: The incremental very accurate positioning device is operable to control accurate positioning of a movable member such as a tool. The apparatus comprises a base with a mounting bar spaced from the base for mounting the member. The bar is movable along its elongate axis by a drive force applied to the proximal end thereof for moving the distal end forwardly and rearwardly along the axis. The bar is mounted on two parallel spaced elongated flat springs that extend transversely of the bar. The springs are fixed to the bar for maintaining an axial force on the bar and are mounted at each end to a block which is pivotally mounted on the base.

Abstract: A table mechanism comprising two hydrostatically coupled tables, a main table and an auxiliary table, in which after clamping the main table, the gaps in the hydrostatically coupling portions of the tables are adjusted so as to position the auxiliary table precisely.
Abstract: The wear of a rotary finishing wheel operating against a continuously advancing work piece causes reduction in force of the wheel against the work piece. Wheel drive motor current is measured and the wheel is advanced toward the work piece to maintain substantially constant current. Wear of the rotary finishing wheel also reduces the surface speed of the wheel on the work piece. The wheel radius is measured and the wheel shaft speed is increased to maintain substantially constant surface speed. Such apparatus is suitable both for vertical and horizontal adjustment of the rotary finishing wheel with respect to a continuously horizontally advanced work piece.
Abstract: A cylindrical grinding process is controlled by measuring the precession of lobes about the grinding wheel and the workpiece and employing the measured lobe precessions to determine an exponential chatter growth index, which is a measure of the rate of growth of chatter and, accordingly, of the stability of the process. The wheel and workpiece rotational speeds are controlled to minimize the growth of chatter and to optimize the process.
Abstract: In dressing a grinding wheel having a non-cylindrical contour, the wheel is moved in a path corresponding substantially to the desired wheel contour by first and second CNC controlled slides while a single point diamond or diamond roll dresser is rotated by a CNC controlled rotary mechanism through selected angles during traversal of the wheel therepast to maintain a vertical reference plane containing the centerline or mid-plane of the diamond dresser point or radius substantially orthogonal to a vertical reference plane containing a tangent to the wheel contour path. Maintenance of the orthogonal relationship between the single point diamond dresser point or radius and wheel contour path during traversal results in the desired wheel contour being accurately dressed.
