Abstract: Excellent liquid laundry-detergent compositions are obtained by combining (1) alkanolamine, (2) nonionic surfactant, (3) sodium carboxymethylcellulose, (4) fabric brightener(s), (5) solvent, and (6) water. The preferred compositions of the invention also usually contain optional ingredients, such as dyes and perfumes. The alkanolamines promote the action of the nonionic surfactants. Moreover, it is desirable to use some triethanolamine for its stabilizing effect. The mixture of alkanolamine and nonionic surfactants is compatible with sodium carboxymethylcellulose, an excellent agent for avoiding redeposition of soil. The compositions according to the invention have good detergent activity when used at temperatures such as 49 to 60 degrees Centigrade. They afford a liquid laundry detergent which is at least as active, pound for pound, as powder laundry detergents now in common use.

Abstract: The invention relates to an improved apparatus for the manufacture of magnetic discs carrying very thin magnetic layers, by applying a fluid dispersion of magnetic materials in a binder mixture to rigid base discs by the spin-coating process. Above the side of the base disc which is to be provided with the magnetic layer, there are arranged means which produce an aerodynamic boundary layer above the discs during rotation of the latter. This avoids the formation of surface irregularities and of coating streaks during production of the layer by spin-coating.

Abstract: Brake fluids of good quality which increase wet equilibrium reflux boiling point without increasing rubber swelling property and disperse or dissolve homogeneously the additives and metals extracted from rubber brake cups and cylinder pipes can be obtained by dissolving semipolar borates containing a bond represented by the formula, ##STR1## which can be a hybridized orbital between SP.sup.2 and SP.sup.3 with regard to boron atom and having at least two hydroxyl groups outside said bond and heteroborates comprising an SP.sup.2 hybridized orbital and containing butyl group and methyl group in their molecule in polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers comprising a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group.
Abstract: A cooling agent mixture useful in low-temperature freezing processes is disclosed. The mixture comprises, based upon the total weight of the mixture, from about 15 to about 35% ethylene glycol monoacetate and ethylene glycol diacetate, the ratio of the monoacetate to the diacetate being from about 1:9 to about 9:1; and from about 35 to about 65% glycol monomethyl ether. The mixture may also comprise from about 0 to about 18% monovalent, short-chained alcohol, or mixture thereof, from about 0 to about 3% of a corrosion inhibitor, and from about 0 to about 40% water. The compositions have outstanding cooling characteristics and possess viscosities acceptable for use in typical cooling installations.
Abstract: High-voltage electrical apparatus includes an outer housing at low potential, an inner electrode disposed within the outer housing at high potential with respect thereto, and support means for insulatably supporting the inner electrode within the outer housing. Conducting particles contaminate the interior of the outer housing, and an insulating gas electrically insulates the inner electrode from the outer housing even in the presence of the conducting particles. The insulating gas is comprised of sulfur hexafluoride at a partial pressure of from about 2.9 to about 3.4 atmospheres absolute, and helium at a partial pressure from about 1.1 to about 11.4 atmospheres absolute. The sulfur hexafluoride comprises between 20 and 65 volume percent of the insulating gas.
Abstract: An electrical insulating material having anti-tracking properties has incorporated therein an erosion inhibiting fluorine-substituted compound. The electrical insulating material comprises a polymeric material having an anti-tracking filler and the fluorine-substituted compound is a hydrophobic, non-ionic compound having a fluorine-substituted aliphatic carbon chain linked to a group having an affinity for the polymeric material and/or the anti-tracking filler. The electrical insulating material may be used in high voltage applications where it is necessary to resist erosion and/or control leakage currents.
Abstract: The utility of calcium chloride-hexahydrate as a heat storage material is improved when barium carbonate, strontium carbonate, barium fluoride, barium fluoride-hydrofluoride and/or strontium fluoride is used as a nucleating agent to prevent supercooling.
Abstract: A heat storage material comprising lithium chlorate-trihydrate as the heat storage medium and potassium perchlorate and/or sodium, potassium or barium hexafluorosilicate as the nucleating agent to reduce supercooling.
Abstract: A detergent product comprises a particulate detergent composition contained within a closed water-insoluble bag which has a water-sensitive seal, whereby the contents of the bag are discharged on contact of the bag with water. Use of such detergent products improves detergent dosage control and hence cost-effectiveness, and is particularly beneficial for detergent compositions of higher density than customary or which contain water-insoluble ingredients.

Abstract: A body for the storage of heat or for the storage of coolness is, in its solid phase, a conglomerate of a mass of crystalline particles of a salt-hydrate, and a rigid cellular support structure in the form of a crust formed by a chemical reaction with the surfaces of the crystalline particles. By way of example, strontium nitrate is reacted with uniformly sized crystalline particles of sodium sulfate decahydrate to form an integral support crust structure of the compound strontium sulfate, which compound is insoluble in water. When the crystalline particles are transformed to the liquid phase, the liquid is confined within the cells of the support structure. The body is enclosed in a moisture impermeable skin to prevent evaporation of the water of crystallization in the liquid phase.

Abstract: Metal-containing soaps are prepared by reaction of at least one fatty acid with a water-soluble, multi-metal, inorganic, amide group-containing monomeric or polymeric complex. Such monomeric or polymeric complex is obtained by reacting, in the presence of aqueous ammonia, at least one non-alkaline metal with an alkali metal hydroxide in accordance with a reaction sequence which produces reactive NH.sub.2 groups. Variation of the reaction parameters, particularly pH, will determine whether the soap has detergent or non-detergent properties. To produce a detergent soap also containing effective bleach properties, hydrogen peroxide can be added to the fatty acid and complex reactants.
