  • Patent number: 5182865
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring workpiece concentricity having a base, a concentricity spin fixture, a spring-biased shaft, a collet, a follower member, and a concentricity indicator. The concentricity spin fixture receives a collet which receives workpieces of varying shank diameters and drive profiles. A follower member designed to engage a specific workpiece drive profile is biased against the workpiece drive profile by the spring-biased shaft. A test operator measures concentricity by rotating the workpiece using the concentricity spin fixture and by measuring the movement of the follower member against the spring-biased shaft using the concentricity indicator. The apparatus is capable of measuring the concentricity of workpieces having a shank and a drive profile, such as screws, bolts, other fasteners, and punches.

  • Patent number: 5181326
Abstract: Disclosed is a tool for marking tiles having a predetermined thickness, so that the tiles may be cut precisely to enable them to be placed adjacent each other and spaced apart a predetermined, uniform, distance corresponding to the thickness of a desired grouting thickness. The tool includes a generally flat, elongated, rectilinear bar having a pair of opposed ends, a pair of opposed sides, and generally flat top and bottom opposed faces. A plurality of different sized slide elements are selectively used with the bar depending of the desired thickness of the grouting. Individual ones of the slide elements are adapted to be carried by the bar and movable along the length of the bar between the ends and removed from the bar by sliding off an end. Each of said slide elements have a body member which is supported by the top face and has a pair of opposed arms extending along and bearing against the sides. The arms have a height less than the thickness of the tile.

  • Patent number: 5179784
Abstract: A wheel alignment device having a frame, a plurality of abutment members fastened to the frame and extending outwardly therefrom, a bubble level fastened to the frame so as to provide an indication of inclination of the frame relative to vertical, and an indicator interactive with the bubble level for producing a humanly perceivable display of a degree of inclination. Each of the abutment members has an end opposite the frame which is coplanar with the ends of the other abutment members. These ends are arranged so as to be parallel relationship to the frame. An insert member is slidably received by the frame and has a first transverse surface at one end and a second transverse surface at another end. A bungie cord is connected to the frame and extends outwardly therefrom for flexibly attaching the frame to a wheel.

  • Patent number: 5179786
Abstract: In measuring apparatus, a workpiece-contacting probe is mounted on a probe-supporting assembly which is maintained at a constant temperature by bathing it with liquid. The liquid is supplied at a constant temperature by a heat exchanger system which also supplies liquid to hydrostatic bearings in the probe-supporting assembly. Before being measured, the workpieces are immersed in a bath which is maintained at a constant temperature. Liquid is fed into the immersion bath by a probe provided with liquid outlets which can be directed against selected areas of a submerged workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5174036
Abstract: An improved multi-functional ruler is disclosed comprising a body of a ruler including an axial seat and an axial rod having convex blocks at each of its two ends attached with rollers. The convex blocks are separately connected to the interior of axial nuts. The axial nuts and the axial seats are tightly fixed together, with an axial block located at a central part of the internal lateral side of the body of the ruler. When the axial rod of the forementioned structure is set in motion, it will not cause a tremendous area of friction with the body of the ruler. It will slide smoothly without causing any position shifting of the axial rod so as to enable lines to be accurately drawn. The axial block can function as a center from which circles of different diameters can be drawn.

  • Patent number: 5174034
Abstract: An all-purpose level in the form of a box that contains a ball rolling on an upwardly concave surface that is a figure of revolution about a vertical axis. The box rests on a member which will be horizontal when the level is in engagement with a truly vertical or horizontal surface. For this purpose, the member is disposed at a right angle to a plate which is hingedly connected to another plate about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the member. The member is selectively lockable in that perpendicular relationship; but when released, the member folds against the first-mentioned plate and the device thus folds about two hinges at right angles to each other, thereby to provide a configuration in which the level can rest on a generally horizontal surface to indicate true horizontal orientation thereof.

  • Patent number: 5172481
Abstract: A sensor for an inclination measuring device which comprises a capsule (3) part-filled with a conductive liquid. First to fourth electrodes (A-D) are disposed within the capsule in contact with the liquid. An electrical signal is applied between electrodes (C, D) and one then the other of electrodes (A, B), to derive a signal indicative of the degree of immersion of the electrode (A), and then the electrode (B) within the liquid. The ratio of these signals is related to the angle of inclination of the capsule about the reference axis O and relative to a first reference angle defined at the gap between the electrodes (A, B). A similar gap, defining a second reference angle is disposed between electrodes (C, D), perpendicular to the gap between electrodes (A, B), and by reconfiguring the electrodes (A-D), to measure the degree of immersion of electrodes (C and D), the sensor is able to sense any angle of inclination about the reference axis.

  • Patent number: 5172485
Abstract: In a capacitive-type linear displacement measuring device, a pick-off body is resiliently biased into sliding contact with a scale. The pick-off body is supported by a flat spring and resiliently biased towards the scale by a leaf spring. The front surface of the scale slides in abutting contact with the front surface of the pick-off body. The flat spring restrains non-axial movement of the pick-off body but permits movement normal to the axial movement so that the pick-off body accurately tracks and remains in abutting contact with the scale as it slides in an axial direction. Changes in capacitance caused by axial displacement of the scale are accurately sensed and changes in capacitance caused by non-axial motion are avoided.

  • Patent number: 5172482
Abstract: A non-marring drawing instrument includes a rolling member for supporting the body of the instrument on a drawing surface in spaced apart relation thereto. The rolling member is mounted on the body for movement between respective rolling and locked positions of the member projecting from the body. A resilient member constrains the rolling member in its rolling position, for rolling movement of the instrument on the drawing surface, and yields for movement of the rolling member into its locked position. Frictional braking structure, which may include the resilient member, engages the rolling member in its locked position, for immobilizing the instrument. Braking is accomplished by pressing the instrument body towards the drawing surface.
