  • Patent number: 5416985
Abstract: A kiln system for drying green lumber to a predetermined moisture content according to the present invention includes a kiln chamber for enclosing a charge of lumber consisting of a number of laterally spaced rectangular solid stacks of lumber, a fan above the lumber for circulating air through the kiln chamber and through the lumber and a first elongate center bridging panel above the stacks of lumber and overlying each vertically extending air space defined between adjacent, laterally spaced stacks of lumber. The elongate center bridging panel includes a center portion having opposed side edges which extends laterally substantially across the air space. The center bridging panel also includes first and second side portions hingedly connected to the opposed edges of the center portion. The center bridging panel substantially prevents circulating air from rising above the stacks of lumber in the vertically extending air space.

  • Patent number: 5412882
Abstract: As a rule a melt-good consisting of glass fragments and glass batching will be moist and tend to agglomerate and bridge-form when being preheated in a plate heat-exchanger 10 whereby the travel of the melt-good through the plate heat-exchanger 10 may be blocked. To remedy these drawbacks, the preheating stage is preceded by a drying stage of the moist melt-good. For that purpose, in the intake zone of the melt-good, the moisture of the melt-good is evaporated by means of a separate feed of hot heating gas into the already cooled flows of heating gas. At the same time the heated melt-good is made to pass through cavities 12 through which the steam may escape to the outside. Thereby condensation shall be precluded and only fluid or friable melt-good arrives at the preheating stage.

  • Patent number: 5406808
Abstract: My two-liter bottle cooler includes a container and a lid. The container has a chamber with an enclosed bottom and an open top. The container has multiple walls displaced from each other creating annular pockets. The annular pocket that is nearest the chamber is filled with a freeze gel and the outer annular pocket is filled with an insulating foam. The open top of the container has external threads and the mouth of the lid is internally threaded with mating threads. The lid can be screwed onto the container to hold a two-liter bottle in place within the chamber. The dome of the lid has a hole with the neck of the two-liter bottle passing through the hole so that beverage contained within the two-liter bottle can be poured directly from the bottle as it is held in the cooler. The hole in the dome is internally threaded so that the cooler can also function as a container without an inserted two-liter bottle. In the latter case, a pour spout is provided with a threaded plug and a spout.

  • Patent number: 5404654
Abstract: A paper web impulse drying apparatus and method. A paper or paperboard web, typically of indefinite length, is treated after issuing from a Fourdrinier or other paper making apparatus by passing it through the nip of a pair of rolls, at least one of which is heated. The rolls both compress the web and raise it to a relatively high temperature. Such treatment enhances certain properties of the web. Web delamination due to flashing of superheated water, after the web leaves the nip, is prevented by both (a) a steam chamber on the exit side of the nip through which the web passes, and (b) heating the web prior to its entrance into the nip. This permits lower roll temperatures to be employed, thereby decreasing the magnitude of the sudden decrease in pressure experienced by the web as it exits from the roll nip. By preheating the sheet and passing it through the steam chamber, the temperature of the heated drying roll or rolls can be decreased to 120.degree.-150.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 5404655
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for regulating the sand discharge by means of a discharge pipe located on the opposite side of a sand charging means of a fluidized bed kiln in connection with the thermal regeneration of old foundry sand, in which the base of the fluidized bed kiln has openings through which the hot gases pass into the fluidized bed. The method is characterized in that the sand exit from the discharge pipe (4) is freed by increasing the air supply in a pneumatic conveyor (5) following the fluidized bed kiln (1) through its perforated base (7) in such a way that the pouring cone (6) formed between the end of the discharge pipe (4) and the base (7) is decreased and consequently the exit of the discharge pipe (4) is freed.

  • Patent number: 5396774
Abstract: Two embodiments (FIGS. 1+ & FIGS. 5+) of a double, by-pass valve system for a closed refrigerant system allowing its safe servicing, the first being included in the original manufacturing of the compressor unit in the refrigerant exit line of the compressor (FIG. 4 ) and the second installed as a retro-fit on the compressor unit and provided "in-line" in the liquid refrigerant line. In the first a double valve body with a transverse bore through a main shut-off valve allows the flow of refrigerant to pass or be shut down to the rest of the system, while a secondary, access port with a transverse bore intersects the main flow valve on the upstream side of the seats by means of a manifold bore, providing a by-pass passageway to an access connection (minus a depressible valve core or "Schrader" valve) for a refrigerant hose to connect to the manifold charging gauges, allowing communication with the closed refrigerant system.

  • Patent number: 5390500
Abstract: A cryogenic liquid vaporizer system 10 comprising an outer tube 22 for exposure to the atmosphere and enclosing an inner tube 16 to form an annulus 36. The fluid enters the inner tube 16 as liquid, flows in the inner tube 16 where it is at least partially vaporized, and discharges into the outer tube 22. In one embodiment the fluid discharges near the end 34 of the outer tube 22 and counterflow in the annulus 36 where it is usually completely vaporized and partially superheated. In another embodiment, the fluid discharges into the outer tube 22 and continues to flow in the longitudinal space 38 provided by the length of outer tube 22. The annulus 36 is occupied by quiescent fluid.

  • Patent number: 5388423
Abstract: Method of and apparatus for heating or cooling a motor vehicle passenger compartment which communicates with a supply air duct for supplying a stream of air to the compartment and a used air duct for exhausting air from the compartment. A heat source in the form of a sorption reactor transfers heat energy to the air stream, with the reactor being provided with a sorbent such as zeolite or the like. The air stream passes through the reaction chamber of the reactor for extracting moisture from the air stream and adding adsorption heat to the air stream. The air stream then passes through an inflow duct before passing through the reactor, and passes from the reactor through an outflow duct at the outlet end of the reactor. A fresh air duct is provided for selectively feeding fresh air into the inflow duct, and an exhaust air duct opening into the atmosphere is provided for selectively communicating the outflow duct with the exhaust air duct.

  • Patent number: 5385121
Abstract: A desuperheater is disclosed which employs an acceleration orifice within a steam conduit to increase the velocity of steam flowing therethrough, creating a region of low pressure steam. A nozzle having an enclosed elliptical discharge orifice sprays small droplets of cooling water in a semi-elliptical hollow cone pattern directly into the region of low pressure steam flow. Evaporization of the cooling water into the steam is optimized allowing effective control of the steam temperature. Nozzle fouling and plugging is reduced because the droplet size created by the nozzle is small in comparison to the nozzle orifice.
