  • Patent number: 6280813
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium for data storage uses a magnetic recording layer having at least two ferromagnetic films antiferromagnetically coupled together across a nonferromagnetic spacer film. The magnetic moments of the two antiferromagnetically-coupled films are oriented antiparallel, and thus the net remanent magnetization-thickness product (Mrt) of the recording layer is the difference in the Mrt values of the two ferromagnetic films. This reduction in Mrt is accomplished without a reduction in the thermal stability of the recording medium because the volumes of the grains in the antiferromagnetically-coupled films add constructively. In a magnetic recording rigid disk application, the magnetic layer comprises two ferromagnetic films, each a granular film of a sputter deposited CoPtCrB alloy, separated by a Ru spacer film having a thickness to maximize the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the two CoPtCrB films.

  • Patent number: 6268024
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is prepared by forming on a plastic substrate, a nickel oxide underlayer having a plane (200) which is predominantly oriented in parallel with the surface of the plastic substrate, then forming on the nickel oxide underlayer at a substrate temperature of less 240° C., a cobalt-containing magnetite thin film having a plane (400) which is predominantly oriented in parallel with the surface of the plastic substrate, and finally oxidizing the cobalt-containing magnetite thin film in a plasma-activated oxygen atmosphere containing a rare gas at a substrate temperature of less than 240° C. while incorporating the rare gas into oxygen. This results in a cobalt-containing maghemite thin film as a perpendicular magnetic film having a spacing of a plane (400) of not more than 2.082 Å. The magnetic recording medium so produced is useful for high-density recording using a plastic substrate.

  • Patent number: 6191032
Abstract: It has been observed that Si introduced into an Al metal line of an Al, Ti, and Si-containing layer stack of an integrated circuit, at concentrations uniformly less than the solid solubility of Si in Al, results in a reduction in Al metal line voiding. Such voiding is a stress induced phenomenon and the introduction of Si appears to reduce stresses in the Al metal lines. By controlling Ti deposition conditions to achieve desired thickness and grain-size characteristics of the Ti underlayer, a self-regulating filter for introduction of Si into the Al metal layer is provided. Si is introduced into the Al metal layer by migration through a suitably deposited Ti layer, rather than during Al layer deposition.

  • Patent number: 6159585
Abstract: A security paper indicates exposure to a solvent by a solvent resistant color signal. A metal mordant dye first co-reactant and a mordant dye second co-reactant form an organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product when the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The metal mordant dye first co-reactant and a mordant dye second co-reactant are chemically isolated from each other so as to prevent the coordinate covalent bond from forming until the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The chemical isolation can be effected by encapsulation or other physical separation of the co-reactants. The organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product, once formed, remains entrapped in the web when the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The chemical isolation prevents the organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product from forming upon the application of pressure alone to the paper.
