  • Patent number: 6636520
Abstract: A method and a system for establishing network tunnels are disclosed. In one embodiment, a transport action is identified in response to packet parameters. Once the transport action is determined, the transport action is pushed onto a pending stack. When a tunnel action is, subsequently, identified in response to the packet parameters, the tunnel action is also pushed onto the pending stack. Upon completion of rule evaluation, at least one tunnel is established according to a tunnel action stored in the pending stack. The action stored at the top of the pending stack is performed first and the action stored at the bottom of the pending stack is performed last.

  • Patent number: 6633566
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product of interfacing a time-domain multiplexed (TDM) link with a cell-switched network. The TDM link supports one or more active channels and one or more idle channels and supplies TDM frames with a sample of each channel in a dedicated timeslot. The TDM link is terminated at a first network node. One or more idle timeslots are removed from each TDM frame to create a compressed TDM frame, where each idle timeslot carries a sample of an idle channel. One or more compressed TDM frames are loaded in a cell that is sent over the cell-switched network to a second network node. The compressed TDM frames are unloaded from the cell. Idle timeslots are inserted in the compressed TDM frames to restore the compressed TDM frames to complete TDM frames. The bandwidth of the cell switched network is efficiently utilized because idle channel samples are not carried over the cell-switched network.

  • Patent number: 6618356
Abstract: A data traffic policer (POL) included in a telecommunication network, to police data traffic which includes data packets that are part of a lower order data flow that is on its turn part of a higher order data flow. Each data packet is associated to a lower order identifier (LOI) that identifies the lower order data flow and to a higher order identifier that (HOI) identifies the higher order data flow. The policer (POL) includes first determiner (DET1) coupled to an input of the policer (POL) to determine, upon reception of a data packet, its lower order identifier (LOI). A first controller (CTRL1) coupled to the first determiner (DET1) checks a conformance of the data packet according to predefined lower order conformance rules (LOC(LOI)) associated to its lower order identifier (LOI) and provides thereby a lower order conformance result (LOCR) that is lower order conforming or lower order non-conforming.

  • Patent number: 6611520
Abstract: A multi-port data communication device includes a common central memory through which all data packets must pass. Packet data is written to and read from the common memory space in bursts in response to receive write requests and transmit read requests. A transmit read request for a first burst of data in a packet has in a central arbiter a relatively low priority and transmit read requests for a second and any subsequent burst of data in a packet have in the central arbiter a relatively high priority. Preferably the receive write requests have in said central arbiter a priority intermediate said relatively low priority and said relatively high priority. The priority system reduces the likelihood of underrun and overrun particularly when the burst size is generally smaller than the packet size.

  • Patent number: 6611521
Abstract: The invention provides a method for communication between a plurality of stations in a communication network using media access protocol, in which medium access is granted to stations obtaining a successful reservation of the medium and in which data transmission verification is performed by the protocol within the reservation. In the method a station sends a request message on the communication medium for a reservation of the medium to a recipient station in the network. The recipient station sends a reservation confirmation message back to the sending station which receives it and responds to the reservation confirmation message by sending an ordered sequence of data frames to the recipient station. After sending the ordered sequence of data frames the sending station sends an end of transmission message to the recipient station, which replies by sending back an end of transmission confirmation identifying the number of frames received in their original sequence.

  • Patent number: 6597702
Abstract: The object of the invention is a communications system that increases successful call setups, improves resource utilization, and reduces overhead. The communications system of the present invention includes a calling endpoint coupled to a called endpoint through a packet switched network. A flag is encoded in a fast call setup message sent from the calling endpoint to the called endpoint. The flag allows the calling endpoint to present the called endpoint with a plurality of different codec options for the send and receive directions. The called endpoint can then choose which one of the codec options is best suited for the proposed call. If the calling endpoint does not support asymmetric channel capabilities, the flag indicates to the called endpoint that the calling endpoint wishes it choose the same or symmetric capability from the plurality of codec options presented for both the send and receive directions.

  • Patent number: 6594238
Abstract: In a mobile communications system that provides packet data services, a packet data connection is established between a mobile station and a radio access network. The state of the connection specifies one of plural different types of radio channels bearing the connection over the radio interface. The connection state preferably also may specify other parameters including for example, one of plural different mobility management schemes tailored to the selected channel type or channel bit rate(s). The connection is dynamically adapted to an optimal state based on one or more conditions relating to the connection. For example, one or more traffic parameters are determined for the connection and used to predict a future value of that parameter. Based on the predicted parameter value or values, an optimal connection state is determined and implemented.

  • Patent number: 6574245
Abstract: An enhanced synchronization status messaging capability for synchronous networks is provided in a messaging format that is compatible with existing synchronization messaging standards. Additional messages, which are based on the same predefined code words used in existing synchronous status messages, are differentially coded and carried in available, but unused message positions, in the existing messaging scheme. In one illustrative embodiment, a two part message format is used for carrying information between network elements and between a network element and a co-located BITS clock in-a synchronous network. A first part of the message format carries the traditional quality level information of synchronization references using the set of code words predefined in the applicable standards. For example, the quality information of a synchronization reference is conveyed using 7 out of 10 “like” messages selected from the group of predefined code words set forth in the standards.

  • Patent number: 6570857
Abstract: A system comprises a wireless master unit and one or more wireless slave units, each having a unique identifier. When a wireless slave unit is active, it is addressed by one of a limited number of temporary addresses. A PARK mode enables a wireless slave unit to be in an idle state during which its temporary address is deallocated, enabling that address to be assigned to another wireless slave unit. To page a parked slave, a paging beacon packet is broadcast to, and received by, each of the wireless slave units at fixed intervals during a master-to-slave time slot. Each wireless slave unit determines whether the received paging beacon packet includes its unique identifier. If so, the wireless slave units retrieves a temporary address from the paging beacon packet. The wireless unit transmits a response to the wireless master unit during a subsequent slave-to-master time slot if the received paging beacon packet included the unique identifier belonging to the wireless slave unit.

  • Patent number: 6529473
Abstract: A device for ATM cell switching having failure tolerance. The device is divided into two types of equipment modules. The first type includes connecting modules while the second type includes two branching and managing modules, one operating in an active mode while the other operates in a passive mode. An accessing device is implanted in each connector. Devices to execute the ATM layer function are almost identically implanted in each connector and in each of the two branching and managing modules. A supervision bus connects both types of modules to ensure quick and automatic reconfiguration of the device in case of failure in one of its components. The supervising bus is of simple configuration and only serves to carry, under the control of the managing module, signals indicative of the master and slave managing means as well as a signal indicative of the active branching module.

  • Patent number: 6519236
Abstract: Transmission power in a frequency-hopping radio system that transmits packets from a sending radio unit to a receiving radio unit, wherein each packet includes an address designating the receiving radio unit, is controlled by measuring received signal strength of packets whose addresses were successfully received in the receiving radio unit, regardless of whether other portions of the respective packets were successfully received. An average signal strength value is generated from the received signal strength measurements. The mathematical difference between the average signal strength value and a target value associated with the receiving radio unit is then determined and used as a basis for deciding whether to send a power control message from the receiving radio unit to the sending radio unit.
