  • Patent number: 5284900
Abstract: The present invention yields a coating film excellent in adhesion, water resistance, solvent resistance and durability. A compound having a carboxyl group and a long-chain alkylthio group or a salt thereof is used as an emulsifier and emulsion polymerization is carried out using a polymerizable monomer or monomers having, within their molecule, a group reactive with a carboxyl group as raw materials for emulsion polymerization, whereby the resin produced by emulsion polymerization and the emulsifier react with each other efficiently on the occasion of film formation and form a crosslinked structure. When a compound having a polymerizable unsaturated group in addition to the carboxyl group and long-chain alkylthio group or a salt thereof is used as the emulsifier, not only the above-mentioned crosslinked structure is formed but also the polymerizable unsaturated group in the emulsifier will react with the unsaturated group in the polymerizable monomer or monomers in the manner of grafting.

  • Patent number: 5248717
Abstract: This invention relates to novel hydroxy-functional polyester diluents, and more particularly, to acrylic-modified hydroxy-functional polyester reactive diluents useful for blending with a variety of thermosetting or thermoplastic film-forming polymers. More specifically, the hydroxy-functional polyester reactive diluents are essentially low molecular weight polyesters derived from triols, and a combination of unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and saturated monocarboxylic acids. These hydroxy-functional polyester diluents may be copolymerized with one or more acrylic monomers, i.e. hydroxy-functional acrylic monomers, and blended with a variety of thermosetting or thermoplastic film-forming polymers. These blends of the film-forming polymers and the hydroxy-functional polyester diluents can be crosslinked with conventional crosslinking agents such as isocyanates and used in the formulation of low VOC paint compositions particularly useful as automotive topcoats.

  • Patent number: 5240992
Abstract: Disclosed is an aqueous emulsion composition of a copolymeric resin having excellent storage stability and capable of forming a coating film of the resin on a substrate surface with excellent adhesion by virtue of introduction of a moiety of the monomeric units having an alkoxy-containing organosilyl group to serve as a silane coupling agent. The organosilyl group-containing moiety is introduced into the resin by the copolymerization of an organosilane compound represented by the general formula Vi--R.sup.1 --SiMe.sub.3-n (OR.sup.2).sub.n, in which Vi is a vinyl group, Me is a methyl group, R.sup.1 is a divalent hydrocarbon group having 4 to 12 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and n is 1, 2 or 3. As a consequence of isolation of the vinyl group from the silicon atom with intervention of the group R.sup.1, the organosilane compound has good copolymerizability with other ethylenically unsaturated organic monomers.

  • Patent number: 5240997
Abstract: Process for producing ethylene-vinyl ester copolymers using a polymerization solvent of a dialkyl sulfoxide (process X); process for producing ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer by liquid phase saponification using a solvent of a dialkyl sulfoxide (process Y); and process for producing shaped articles which comprises contacting the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer obtained by the process Y, or that obtained by saponifying the ethylene-vinyl ester copolymer obtained by process X, to a non-solvent for ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer.Ethylene-vinyl ester copolymers having a wide range of ethylene content and higher degree of polymerization than that with solution polymerization using methanol. The rate of saponification is higher than that with single solvent system of lower alcohol.Production cost is low, because production process of polymer is directly connected to that of shaped articles utilizing the polymer.
