  • Patent number: 5555804
Abstract: A perfecting sheet rotary offfset press has a top surface printing unit and a back surface printing unit each formed of an impression cylinder, and a blanket cylinder, a plate cylinder, and an inking mechanism which are disposed above or below the impression cylinder, respectively. The top and back surface printing units are connected through the impression cylinders constituting the respective printing units. A sheet is sequentially transferred by the respective impression cylinders of the top and back surface printing units, and printing is performed on the top and back surfaces of the sheet as it passes through the printing units. Thus, this perfecting sheet rotary offset press can print at high speeds and presents few printing faults, and its dimension can be made smaller.

  • Patent number: 5555800
Abstract: A method of printing color images which includes the formation of a pattern of three primary color separated halftones of the image from a medium applied to a substrate. The medium is embossed to form a surface relief configuration on each halftone image. Each surface relief configuration reflects one specific primary color at a specific angle. In one embodiment, the medium is applied to a substrate in the pattern of color separated halftone images in a single printing pass by a composite offset printing plate. The medium is then embossed by an embossing plate to create the surface relief configurations thereon. In a second embodiment, the medium is applied to the substrate and embossed by a single plate in a single printing pass. In a third embodiment, the medium is applied to the substrate in a relatively continuous layer and thereafter embossed to simultaneously create a pattern of color separated halftones of the image and a different surface relief configuration on each halftone image.

  • Patent number: 5551338
Abstract: A drive disengaging device for a seal-type dampening system in an offset lithographic printing press. The disengaging mechanism includes a clutch gear rotationally mounted on a drive shaft and having a clutch bearing securely mounted thereto. The drive shaft incorporates a specified diameter, on which the clutch bearing functions as designed, and a stepped diameter, on which the clutch bearing does not function as designed. Alternate axial positioning of the clutch bearing between the specified diameter and the stepped diameter causes the clutch bearing to function or not function, respectively, as designed. Gear mesh between the clutch gear and the press drive train is maintained when the clutch gear is in either position. Axial positioning of the gear clutch assembly is controlled by the press operator through an actuator assembly. The actuator assembly can be either an axial-type or rotation-type, depending on the press configuration and space restrictions.

  • Patent number: 5551342
Abstract: A method for controlling the ink guidance of a printing machine, especially a sheet-fed offset printing machine. Ink-density spectra are recorded by means of a spectral photometer at a plurality of image points of the original and of the printed copy and the differential ink-density spectra are determined from these values. These differential ink-density spectra are then represented as a linear combination of the individual ink-density spectra of the inks participating in the composite printing. Regulating commands for the ink-guide members of the printing machine are thereupon derived from the proportionality factors of this linear combination.

  • Patent number: 5542353
Abstract: In the sheet-by-sheet printing process, a sheet is printed during its passage in the nip zone between a printing cylinder, which comprises on its periphery a rubber element, and an impression cylinder. The ink is supplied to the printing cylinder by an ink supply cylinder. In order to reduce the deformations of the printing dots, the ratios of the peripheral linear speeds of the ink supply cylinder and of the impression cylinder with respect to the peripheral linear speed of the rubber element of the printing cylinder are adjusted to values in the range of 1.004 to 1.05.

  • Patent number: 5540149
Abstract: In a web offset rotary printing machine having a printing tower with upper and lower portions defining a recess between them, and an interchangeable cassette lodged in the recess and supporting at least plate and blanket cylinders, the upper and lower portions are joined by an elevator mechanism so that the upper portion may be raised and lowered relative to the tower portion to accommodate the interchange of cassettes of different heights. A cassette is supported on transverse linear bearings on the lower portion, and helps support the upper portion when the latter is lowered onto it. The linear bearings allow a cassette to be slid in and out from either side of the machine. The cassettes may be of different heights, thus facilitating optimization of the cylinder arrangement in the cassette.

  • Patent number: 5533448
Abstract: A method and a device for controlling the sheet inlet when starting up a sheet-processing printing machine having a vibrator-type inking unit, in which the sheets are positioned at front lays, their correct position is established and, in the case of the position having been established as correct, the sheet inlet is cleared at a particular machine position. The intention is to avoid the first entering sheet running into the printing machine in each case at different phases of the vibrator cycle in the case of a plurality of start-up operations. This is achieved according to the invention in that the first sheet is conveyed up to the positioning line, the feeder is then switched off and the sheet inlet is only cleared again when the vibrator gearing assumes a particular angular position.

  • Patent number: 5533450
Abstract: An ink fountain apparatus for a printing press includes an inclined member with an ink supply adjusting member which is swingable about an axis parallel with the rotational axis of an ink fountain roller for movement between a first position where ink fountain is formed and a second position where the ink fountain is not formed. Piston rods of hydraulic cylinders are connected to the inclined member via a connection mechanism to move the inclined member between the first position and the second position. Stoppers are also provided to stop the inclined member at the first position. Springs are included in the connection mechanism to press the inclined member against the stoppers. The spring force produced by the springs is smaller than the force produced by the drive means. With this structure, the work load of an operator can be reduced while enhancing the efficiency and safety of his work.

  • Patent number: 5531162
Abstract: A method of registering press plates on plate cylinders used in a sheet-fed press for multicolor printing, in which register information is obtained by using edges of the press plates as references. Each press plate is stretched around a plate cylinder with its front edge and one side edge abutted against gripping references on the plate cylinder. A press plate register measuring device similarly uses the edges of the press plate as references, with the press plate in the same positional relationship as on the press cylinder. On the measuring device deviations between references marks on the plates and benchmark references are measured and utilized to adjust the position of the plate cylinders to bring the printing plates into registered printing positions.
