Abstract: An insertable flux thimble interface for use in a bottom nozzle of a fuel assembly in a nuclear reactor (i.e., a bottom nozzle insert) is disclosed herein. In various aspects, the bottom nozzle insert has properties that are different from traditional bottom nozzle flux thimble interfaces. The properties of the bottom nozzle insert may mitigate wear phenomena observed on the flux thimble. For example, the bottom nozzle insert may be constructed from material that is different from the material of the bottom nozzle. In some aspects, the bottom nozzle insert is constructed from material that has a hardness that is less than the hardness the bottom nozzle material. In other aspects, the bottom nozzle insert is constructed from a material that has a hardness that is less than the hardness of the flux thimble material.

Abstract: Nuclear propulsion fission reactor structure has an active core region including fuel element structures, a reflector with rotatable neutron absorber structures (such as drum absorbers), and a core former conformal mating the outer surface of the fuel element structures to the reflector. Fuel element structures are arranged abutting nearest neighbor fuel element structures in a tri-pitch design. Cladding bodies defining coolant channels are inserted into and joined to lower and upper core plates to from a continuous structure that is a first portion of the containment structure. The body of the fuel element has a structure with a shape corresponding to a mathematically-based periodic solid, such as a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) in a gyroid structure. The nuclear propulsion fission reactor structure can be incorporated into a nuclear thermal propulsion engine for propulsion applications, such as space propulsion.

  • Patent number: 11791056
Abstract: A nuclear reactor controlled by moving a liquid fuel between a reservoir and chambers in the core is provided. No pumps or moving parts within the reactor vessel are needed to move the fuel. The control system moves the liquid fuel between the core and the reservoir by moving a separate control gas. It can monitor the internal state of the core through the control connections. The fuel chamber is shaped so that evolved gases escape the core and can be collected at the control connections. The core reverts to a safe state on power failure.

  • Patent number: 11783952
Abstract: Application of axial seed magnetic fields in the range 20-100 T that compress to greater than 10,000 T (100 MG) under typical NIF implosion conditions may significantly relax the conditions required for ignition and propagating burn in NIF ignition targets that are degraded by hydrodynamic instabilities. Such magnetic fields can: (a) permit the recovery of ignition, or at least significant alpha particle heating, in submarginal NIF targets that would otherwise fail because of adverse hydrodynamic instability growth, (b) permit the attainment of ignition in conventional cryogenic layered solid-DT targets redesigned to operate under reduced drive conditions, (c) permit the attainment of volumetric ignition in simpler, room-temperature single-shell DT gas capsules, and (d) ameliorate adverse hohlraum plasma conditions during laser drive and capsule compression. In general, an applied magnetic field should always improve the ignition condition for any NIF ignition target design.

  • Patent number: 11742097
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a pellet containing an oxide additive to improve a nuclear-fission-gas-adsorption ability of a uranium-dioxide pellet used as nuclear fuel and increase the grain size thereof, and to a method of manufacturing the same. A La2O3—Al2O3—SiO2 sintering additive is added to uranium dioxide so that mass movement is accelerated due to the liquid phase generated during sintering of the uranium-dioxide pellet, which promotes the growth of grains thereof. Further, since less volatilization occurs during sintering due to the low vapor pressure of the liquid phase, efficient additive performance is exhibited, so the liquid phase surrounding the grain boundary effectively adsorbs cesium, which is a nuclear fission gas.

  • Patent number: 11725411
Abstract: A nuclear fuel assembly is constructed with fuel assembly components that are wire wrapped and positioned in hexagonal rings within a fuel assembly duct. The fuel assembly components positioned in an outermost ring of the fuel assembly are wire wrapped with a pitch that is shorter than fuel assembly components positioned at an interior ring of the fuel assembly. The shorter pitch at the outer ring of the fuel assembly increases pressure drop of a coolant fluid at the edge and corner subchannels and thereby reduces the temperature gradient across the fuel assembly, which provides a higher output temperature of the nuclear reactor without substantially increasing peak temperature of the fuel cladding.

  • Patent number: 11728050
Abstract: Control rod drives include linearly-moveable control elements inside an isolation barrier. Control rod drives move the control element through secured magnetic elements subject to magnetic fields. Induction coils may generate magnetic fields and be moveable across a full stroke length of the control element in the reactor. A motor may spin a linear screw to move the induction coils on a vertical travel nut. A control rod assembly may house the magnetic elements and directly, removably join to the control element. The control rod assembly may lock with magnetic overtravel latches inside the isolation barrier to maintain an overtravel position. Overtravel release coils outside the isolation barrier may release the latches to leave the overtravel position. Operation includes moving the induction coils with a linear screw to drive the control element to desired insertion points, including full insertion by gravity following de-energization. No direct connection may penetrate the isolation barrier.
