The invention relates to additive combinations which when added to a lubricant can provide and improve frictional and, optionally, thermal stability properties.     Abstract: An alkaline earth alkylaryl sulfonate having a BN of at least 250, wherein the aryl radical is not phenol, wherein the alkyl chain is a linear chain that contains between 14 and 40 carbon atoms, and wherein the mole % of the aryl-sulfonate radical fixed on position 1 or 2 of the linear alkyl chain is between 13% and 30%. Such an alkaline earth alkylaryl sulfonate has improved compatibility, solubility, and foaming performances while having low color and no skin formation. The starting alkylate has a low iodine number, a very high level of monoalkylate, and, as a consequence, a high yield at the sulfonation step.

    Abstract: Improved synthetic lubricants based on a 100% polyol ester composition suitable for use in high temperature static chain oil applications is provided. The lubricant includes a base stock based on a polyol ester that is the reaction product of a neopentyl polyol including a major proportion of dipentaerythritol and a mixture of C5 to C12 carboxylic acids. The preferred carboxylic acid mixture includes heptanoic (C7) acid, caprylic/capric (C8-10) acid and isononanoic (3, 5, 5-trimethylhyxanoic acid (iso-C9). The polyol base stock is mixed with an additive package that includes a viscosity index improver (tackifier), antioxidants, extreme pressure/antiwear agents and a corrosion inhibitor. The additive package may be added in up to about 20 percent by weight of the lubricant to provide a viscosity of the lubricant at 40° C. of at least about 275 cSt and at 100° C. of no less than about 25.0 cSt.

    Abstract: A process for polymerizing 1,3-butadiene into a low molecular weight high-cis polybutadiene is described using a catalyst system comprising: (a) a neodymium-containing compound, (b) an aluminoxane or a trialkyl aluminum compound, (c) an organoaluminum hydride, and (d) a halogen source. A blend of a high molecular weight high-cis polybutadiene and the low molecular weight high-cis polybutadiene is also disclosed for use in pneumatic tire treads. Desirably both the high and the low molecular weight polymers have high cis contents, with the low molecular weight polymer being at least 70 percent cis and the high molecular weight polymer being at least 92 percent cis. Desirably both polymers are made with a neodymium catalyst system. The blends provide a balance of properties including good snow traction, wet traction, and rolling resistance while providing a balance of good physical properties including tension at break, modulus etc.
