  • Patent number: 4747807
Abstract: A control system for an infinitely variable transmission has a transmission ratio control valve having a spool for controlling oil supplied to a cylinder of a drive pulley to change the transmission ratio. Acceleration of depression of an accelerator pedal is detected to produce an acceleration signal. By controlling the pressure of oil supplied to the transmission ratio control valve in accordance with engine operating conditions and the acceleration signal, the spool is shifted, so that the speed of changing the transmission ratio is controlled.

  • Patent number: 4746003
Abstract: In a sortation conveyor for cartons and the like wherein selected cartons can be diverted out of the main line to a branch line by means of diverter wheels which are directed obliquely with respect to the main line and which pop up into the path of a carton traveling on the main line to divert it to an associated branch line, the diverter wheel assembly comprises a plurality of diverter wheels arranged in two rows extending transversely across the main conveyor line, with all of these wheels being skewed with respect to the main line so that they define a course directed toward their associated branch line, and also a single further diverter wheel which is located downstream from the two rows of wheels at a position overlapping but spaced from the adjacent side edge of the main conveyor belt or other main conveying means so that if a carton, particularly a large carton, extends beyond the two rows of diverter wheels, the extra diverter wheel will prevent such carton from making frictional contact with the mai

  • Patent number: 4744604
Abstract: A vibration damper for a road planer and the like with a main frame and a sub-frame movably connected thereto. A prime mover and a tool are mounted on the sub-frame, which includes frame members forming compartments adapted to receive lead shot particles therein. The particles absorb vibrational energy from the prime mover and the tool. A method of damping vibration is disclosed wherein vibrational energy is transmitted to the lead shot particles which vibrate and generate heat. The heat is dissipated through the frame members to the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4744415
Abstract: In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a kickover tool for replacing and removing valves includes an orienting section having angularly spaced dogs that are cooperable with a sleeve in a side pocket mandrel to cause orientation of the tool and to trigger longitudinal movement of a control rod. Rod movement cams an inwardly biased kickover arm outwardly to enable extension of guides that cooperate with ramps or the like in the side pocket mandrel to cause a valve coupled to said kickover arm to be inserted through a seat and latched in place in the mandrel. After the valve is seated and latched, the guides are disabled wtih response to upward force on the pivot arm. A clutch to prevent premature actuation of the kickover tool also is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4742874
Abstract: An improved annular seal between tubular members in a subsea wellhead having an annular seal member with a U shape in section with the opening facing upwardly and two interengaged annular wedges for energizing the sealing surfaces of the inner and outer portions of the seal member at different levels. The interengagement of the wedges includes sufficient play to provide proper energizing of both inner and outer sealing surfaces at the same time. Further, the inner sealing surface is positioned at a much higher level than the outer sealing surface and close to the upper end of the inner member in which it is to seal to minimize the setting force for the inner sleeve and to minimize the amount of drag the seal will incur when retrieved. Also, the location of the outer sealing surface close to the inner member shoulder minimizes the reaction path of the lockdown sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4741398
Abstract: A hydraulic accumulator-compressor vessel using geothermal brine under pressure as a piston to compress waste (CO.sub.2 rich) gas is used in a system having a plurality of gas separators in tandem to recover pipeline quality gas from geothermal brine. A first high pressure separator feeds gas to a membrance separator which separates low pressure waste gas from high pressure quality gas. A second separator produces low pressure waste gas. Waste gas from both separators is combined and fed into the vessel through a port at the top as the vessel is drained for another compression cycle. High pressure brine is then admitted into the vessel through a port at the bottom of the vessel. Check valves control the flow of low pressure waste gas into the vessel and high pressure waste gas out of the vessel.

  • Patent number: 4741406
Abstract: A tri-cone drill bit (10, 10A) comprising a plurality of conical roller cutters (16, 16A) having hard metal cutting elements thereon and being so positioned relative to each other that their rotational axes are offset from the rotational axis of the drill bit (10, 10A), and a drilling fluid nozzle system for directing a pressurized fluid stream (76, 76A) across certain of the cutting elements and thereafter against the formation generally at the bottom of the well bore so that when the drill bit (10, 10A) is used in its most advantageous areas, such as the soft, medium-soft and plastic formations, the nozzle system prevents "balling up" of the cutters and greatly increases the drilling efficiency of the bit. In one embodiment (FIGS. 15-20) the drill bit body (12A) has vertically extending recessed portions (21A) formed at the junctures (19A) of the lugs (15A) to provide flow passageways for the upward flow of drilling fluid and entrained cuttings.
