  • Patent number: 4718487
Abstract: An auxiliary well pressure packoff assembly for wireline control valves is positionable within the downstream passage of a wireline valve body without requiring cutting of the wireline and receives the wireline in surrounded, sealed relation. A retainer closure positively retains the packing assembly within the valve body passage. An externally controllable mechanism is provided to displace resilient sealing material of the packing assembly to enhance the sealing relationship thereof with the wireline and valve body passage, thus providing an auxiliary seal to protect workers from hazards in the event well pressure should leak past the wireline control valve mechanism. The packoff assembly also clamps the cable to prevent it from moving and vents any leaked well pressure to a safe location. An automatic pressure activated self-energizing feature is provided which increases sealing capability of the system in proportion to increase in well pressure.

  • Patent number: 4718505
Abstract: A rotary drill bit for use in drilling or coring deep holes in subsurface formations comprises a bit body having a shank for connection to a drill string and a plurality of cutting elements mounted at the surface of the bit body. Each cutting element is bonded to a stud which is received in a socket in the bit body. Spaced rearwardly of each cutting element is a separate abrasion element comprising a stud which is received in a socket in the bit body and is impregnated with particles of natural or synthetic diamond. The abrasion element provides a back-up in the event of failure or excessive wear of the cutting element and its spacing from the cutting element prevents the damaging transfer of heat from the abrasion element to the cutting element. The cooling may be enhanced by providing a channel for drilling fluid between the cutting element and abrasion element.

  • Patent number: 4717282
Abstract: A roller carriage assembly for a road surface finishing machine of the type having an elongated main frame is disclosed. The assembly features a vibrating drum or roller wherein rotating eccentric weights used to generate vibrations can be rotated at speeds which are independent of the speed of roller rotation to thus permit the finishing of extremely low slump concrete. The assembly employs a scissors extender system which permits rapid and precise changes in the level of the roller relative to the main frame without affecting the attitude of the former relative to the latter. The scissors extender system is locked in place by a rotating locking mechanism and is rigidified by the use of four chains disposed at the corners of the system and strung between upper and lower plates between which the scissors mechanism operates.

  • Patent number: 4716969
Abstract: A subsurface safety valve having a piston and cylinder assembly for actuating the safety valve. First and second flow sealing valves are positioned in communication with a flow control passageway to the assembly in which said first and second valves open and close in response to the movement of the piston relative to the cylinder. The first valve shuts off fluid flow from the fluid control passageway to the assembly when the safety valve is open and the second valve to shuts off fluid flow from the cylinder to the fluid control passageway when the safety valve is closed. A third valve may be positioned on the side of the piston in communication with the fluid control passageway and is redundantly positioned with the second valve. A lost motion connection may be provided for sequentially actuating the second and third valves.

  • Patent number: 4715445
Abstract: A latch and retrieving assembly is shown for use with a well tool having an axial bore which includes an external landing shoulder and an annular latch recess which is spaced below the landing shoulder. The assembly includes a mandrel which is inserted in to the bore of the well tool. The mandrel has a lower abutment and a collet member carried about the mandrel above the abutment. The collet member includes a carrier ring which is seatable on the shoulder and a plurality of fingers which depend from the carrier ring and which terminate in radially enlarged tips which are disposed in registration with the recess when the carrier ring is seated on the landing shoulder. The tips cooperate with the lower abutment to latch into and to be released from the recess respectively in response to downward movement of the mandrel. A special profile formed on the mandrel lower abutment provides latching engagement and subsequent release of the assembly upon downward movement of the mandrel relative to the collet.
