Abstract: The invention relates to the production of desirably purified refractory metal borides. The method can be used to purify even commercially available material. Careful attention is directed to the oxygen impurity level of the refractory metal boride and such will usually be maximized at a very low level. Critical attention is directed to the oxygen to carbon molar ratio. Heating of impure materials, typically presented in consolidated form and having constituent adjustments in accordance with invention principles, can lead to the preparation of products of highly desirable density, on the one hand, and prepare products of extremely low contamination levels, on the other hand.
Abstract: A grease composition comprising oil, colloidal particle filler, and, optionally, a bleed inhibitor is disclosed. The grease typically has a critical yield stress below 140 Pa at 20.degree. C., preferably below 70 or 35 Pa. The grease can advantageously be used as a cable filling material, especially for optical fiber cable. In the latter case it can result in cable having substantially no cabling loss. Preferred compositions comprise 77 to 95% b.w. of ASTM type 103, 104 A, or 104B paraffinic or naphthenic oil, or polybutene oil; 2 to 15% b.w. of hydrophobic or hydrophilic fused silica; and optionally, up to 15% b.w. of styrene-rubber or styrene-rubber-styrene block copolymer, or semiliquid rubber.

Abstract: A non-deleterious coating composition for the deposition of a dry film lubricant coating on a rubber sealing element comprises:(a) 1 to 10% by weight of a component selected from the group consisting of waxes and normally solid aliphatic alcohols;(b) 1 to 10% by weight of a lubricating oil; and(c) the balance being a solvent for (a) and (b); wherein the solvent, when applied to the rubber sealing element, in said coating composition, evaporates from the coating composition before any substantial degradation of the physical properties of the rubber sealing element occurs. A method for coating a rubber sealing element and the rubber sealing element coated with the dry film lubricant are also disclosed. The invention finds particular applicability in the lubrication of rubber sealing elements, e.g., O-rings, which will be utilized in the manufacture of devices by automated assembly techniques.
Abstract: A fuel composition for internal combustion engines, and more particularly, a fuel composition for internal combustion engines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per gallon of fuel is described. The fuel provides acceptable valve seat protection in engines designed to operate on leaded or unleaded fuels. Ordinarily, leaded fuels contain components to reduce deposits within the engine cylinders which unleaded fuels do not. As leaded fuels become unavailable, some refiners will add valve protecting components to the unleaded fuels to satisfy the leaded market. Such fuels will then potentially cause an increase in the octane requirement. This invention deals with polybasic carboxylate additives having valve seat protection properties which avoid or minimize the octane requirement increase.
