  • Patent number: 7394865
Abstract: A signal constellation for wireline or wireless multi-carrier communication systems, such as systems using OFDM or MC-CDMA, has points separated from one another by maximizing a distance between conditional probability distributions, such as a Kullbeck-Leibler (KL) distance. Preferably, the constellation points are arranged in concentric circles, with or without a point at the origin, wherein adjacent circles are rotated to maximize an angular distance between points on adjacent circles. Pilot symbols inserted in the transmitted signal are used by a receiver to estimate the channel of the multi-carrier system. Different constellations show optimum performance for different signal to noise ratios, and for different numbers of taps used to estimate the channel, especially in a fast fading environment where there may be fewer pilots per OFDM or MC-CDMA symbol than channel taps.

  • Patent number: 7372803
Abstract: A node within a mesh network includes an Optical Connection Controller (OCC) and a network element. When a connection path within the mesh network is required, an OCC determines if a particular connection path requires a network element to operate as a virtual gateway to separate the mesh network into separate protection domains for that particular connection path. A connection path might require separate protection domains in cases in which the number of network elements and/or repeater/amplifier components for a particular connection path is greater than a threshold, the total length of links for the connection path is above a threshold and/or another factor that could cause the recovery time for the connection path to increase beyond an acceptable threshold level. If the OCC determines that one or more virtual gateways are required for a particular connection path, the OCC selects an appropriate network element within the network to operate as a virtual gateway for that particular connection path.

  • Patent number: 7333452
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting packet data in a communications system assigns an IP address to a terminal based on a network access identifier corresponding to the terminal, and then sends packet data to the terminal using the IP address. The terminal may be a simple IP user terminal or a mobile IP user terminal, and the packet data being sent preferably corresponds to an IP push service. In order to send the packet data, a protocol link is established between the terminal and network. Transmission of packet data on this link may be managed using an information table which relates information corresponding to the IP address to the network access identifier. This table is updated with information relating to the IP address when, for example, the network access identifier changes, when a point-to-point protocol timer expires, when an IP registration expires a location of the terminal changes.

  • Patent number: 7333422
Abstract: The present invention discloses an optimal hardware implementation of the FFT/IFFT operation that minimizes the number of clock cycles required to compute the FFT/IFFT while at the same time minimizing the number of complex multipliers needed. For performing an N-point FFT/IFFT operation in N clock cycles, the optimal hardware implementation consists of several modules. An input module receives a plurality of inputs in parallel and combines the inputs after applying a multiplication factor to each of the inputs. At least one multiplicand generator is used to provide multiplicands to the system. At least two complex multiplier modules for performing complex multiplications are required with at least one of the complex multiplier modules receiving an output from the input module. Each of the complex multiplier modules receives multiplicands from the at least one multiplicand generator. Furthermore, at least one of the complex multiplier modules receives an output of another complex multiplier module.

  • Patent number: 7327765
Abstract: New version devices of a home phone line network may operate on a first carrier frequency (within the new version frequency band) while old version devices may operate at a second carrier frequency (within the old version frequency band). Preamble, header, and trailer portions of a new version signal include a plurality of spectral copies of a baseband modulated signal. One or more of these spectral copies of the baseband modulated signal is/are indistinguishable from corresponding components of an old version signal. The new version signal is transmit filtered to have a negatively sloping power spectral density in order to maintain a constant power level in relation to old version signals and to have slope that is opposite of binder crosstalk so as to form, with the average crosstalk, a constant level white noise floor.

  • Patent number: 7304952
Abstract: In a technique for performing flow control in a wide-area network, a user-specified flow control message such as a Pause message is provisioned at a first node, and a user-specified flow control message filter is provisioned at a second node coupled to the first node. At the first node, the availability of a buffer for data received from the second node is monitored, and in response to a predetermined availability condition, the provisioned flow control message is sent to the second node. In a Pause/Resume protocol, the buffer may be monitored for an Almost Full condition, and the flow control message may be a Pause message indicating that the first node should suspend transmission. The second node compares messages from the first node against the flow control message filter. Upon detecting the flow control message from the first node, the second node takes a predetermined flow control action with respect to the transmission of data to the first node.

  • Patent number: 7302018
Abstract: Iterative detection for a MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) wireless communications system uses multiple stages for interference cancellation refinements. Detection is determined by maximizing signal to noise plus interference ratios. Equalization matrix updating uses a matrix-inversion-free recursion. For P transmitter antennas and Q receiver antennas, the soft symbol vector estimates are z=Fr?Gshard with F a P×Q IMMSE detector, r the received Q vector, and G a P×P interference canceller with shard hard decisions of prior symbols and iterations.

  • Patent number: 7289552
Abstract: K data signals, or bursts, are transmitted over a shared spectrum in a code division multiple access communication format. A combined signal is received and sampled over the shared spectrum, as a plurality of received vector versions. The combined signal includes the K transmitted data signals. A plurality of system matrices and an associated covariance matrix using codes and estimated impulse responses of the K data signals is produced. Each system matrix corresponds to a received vector version. The system and covariance matrices are extended and approximated as block circulant matrices. A diagonal matrix of each of the extended and approximated system and covariance matrices are determined by prime factor algorithm-fast Fourier transform (PFA-FFT) without division of the matrix. The received vector versions are extended. A product of the diagonal matrices and the extended received vector versions is taken.

  • Patent number: 7286619
Abstract: The SIR values of multi-paths obtained by a transmission path estimator are accumulated by an integrator at very cycle of a pilot signal, an average value for sufficiently long period is calculated by an average value calculator, a reference value is divided by a divider and applied as a control coefficient to multipliers, where it is multiplied by the SIR values, and the weight values of multi-paths are obtained. As for the despreaded data from a despreading unit, the timing of all data is synchronized in buffers, the data is complex multiplied by the above-mentioned weight values in multipliers, and RAKE is synthesized by adding in an adder, and outputted as final demodulated data to a soft decision unit.
