Patent number: 5096283Abstract: An adjustable rear view mirror extension apparatus that attaches to a standard existing rear view mirror found in most automobiles and other motor vehicles. The apparatus has a mirror, a mirror frame to secure the mirror, a plurality of lateral supports to position the mirror on the frame, and a flexible mirror retainer to releasingly retain the mirror in the mirror frame. There is a mirror frame support that allows the mirror to rotate on a vertical axis and a rotating device to allow the mirror to rotate on a horizontal axis. The rotating device has a housing comprising two sections. The two sections are adjustably connected to adjust the tension of the insert spring which controls the ease of movement of the mirror around its horizontal axis. The rotating device has a first and second surface with a plurality of radial bosses and grooves, respectively, included are an insert, spring and insert gripping device to restrict rotation.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1990Date of Patent: March 17, 1992Inventor: Hans Croteau

Patent number: 4988153Abstract: A holographic memory read-out system in which multiple pages of information are angularly multiplexed onto a recording medium, either planar or volume. For read-out of the hologram, a selected one of a plurality of surface-emitting semiconductor lasers arranged in a two-dimensional array is activated. The coherent output beam is passed through a collimating lens which produces a coherent plane-wave having a direction dependent upon which laser in the array produced the output beam. The plane-wave uniformly irradiates the recording medium to thereby diffract a selected image at a set angle to an imaging apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1989Date of Patent: January 29, 1991Assignee: Bell Communications Research, Inc.Inventor: Eung-Gi Paek

Patent number: 4953968Abstract: An automated visual testing system is disclosed which presents an alternating steady state visual stimulus to a patient through an optical system that modifies the stimulus image. As the image changes, the patient produces evoked potentials that change. The evoked potentials are detected by a product detector which produces the amplitude of the evoked potentials. The amplitude is monitored through an analog to digital converter by a supervisor computer. The supervisor computer produces patient response curves from which it diagnoses visual system malfunction and/or prescribes correction. A control processor controls a stimulus generator to produce the image and an optical system, that includes polarizers, an astigmatism test slit or a cylindrical lens, a zoom lens system and a variable focal length test lens, transmits the image to the patient. The steady state visual potential stimulus generator is a device by which a rapidly complementing or flashing pattern can be presented to the patient.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1989Date of Patent: September 4, 1990Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Gary W. Patent number: 4948213Abstract: A light beam scanning apparatus includes a rotatable holographic disk having a hologram which is constructed by an interference of a reference wave and an objective wave, which is a coma wave, the coma wave having a focal length which decreases toward the outer periphery from the inner periphery of the holographic disk in a radial direction. The focal length has a different direction perpendicular to the radial direction, so that when the hologram of the holographic disk which rotates is reconstructed by a reconstruction wave, the scanning is effected by the beams diffracted by the hologram.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1989Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Fujitsu LimitedInventors: Shin-ya Hasegawa, Fumio Yamagishi, Hiroyuki Ikeda, Shigetake Iwata

Patent number: 4946253Abstract: The present invention discloses a reconfigurable optical interconnect apptus that redirects an optical beam through embedded holographic elements of a substrate-mode hologram to connecting information processors or to photonic switching devices. The apparatus includes a substrate-mode hologram, including a polarization insensitive input hologram member, one or more embedded polarization sensitive hologram members that couple transmitted diffracted or non-diffracted light to respective optical receivers. The optical receivers further couple the light out of the substrate-mode hologram or to cascaded similar apparatus. The method includes processing an incident beam of polarized light through a controlled polarization modulator, through an optical information encoder, such as a spatial light modulator, then further processing the polarized light through the substrate-mode hologram. The apparatus has advantages of being compact and expandable into larger systems.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1989Date of Patent: August 7, 1990Assignee: Arizona Board of Regents For and On Behalf of the University of ArizonaInventor: Raymond K. Patent number: 4934803Abstract: A deformable mirror construction is disclosed in which a difference in pressure between the front reflecting surface of the deformable mirror and an enclosed chamber behind the mirror's reflecting surface is used to restore the reflecting surface to its undeformed condition after its shape has been deformed by the selective operation of one or more electrodistortive actuators. A pump is associated with the chamber to produce at least a partial vacuum in the enclosed chamber. The use of a pressure differential to influence the shape of the mirror's reflecting surface avoids the need to have the actuators fastened to the reflecting surface, thereby permitting a construction which provides for the easy replacement of actuators. A preferred embodiment of the deformable mirror includes an apparatus for circulating a coolant through the mirror's faceplate to remove heat therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1989Date of Patent: June 19, 1990Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventor: Mark A. Patent number: 4929073Abstract: An optical element (10) is mounted and aligned with minimum strain and distortion within a support (12) to which at least three mounts (14) are attached and spaced 120.degree. about the periphery of the optical element. Each mount comprises a spherical disc (16) spherically contacting a spherical surface (30) on a seat (20) which is linearly moveable within a housing (18). Each disc abuts and supports the optical element. Any loading exerted on the support causes the discs to rotate with respect to the seats and the seats to reciprocate with respect to the annular disc-retaining housings to prevent such loadings from being transmitted to the optical element, thereby enabling the optical element to maintain a chosen, strain-free orientation with pressure on the spherical disc being evenly distributed.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1988Date of Patent: May 29, 1990Assignee: Hughes Aircraft CompanyInventors: John A. Patent number: 4925291Abstract: A temple end piece for a temple of a spectacle frame has a unit stable in a form composed of an essentially horizontal first segment and a second segment curving downward to the rear in the shape of an arc. Connected to this unit is a third segment formed by a soft, flexible band, the upper end of which is attached to the first segment and the lower end of which is permanently connected to the lower end of the second segment. This band extends in the uncharged state of the temple end piece curved essentially in the shape of an arc, in fact, in a manner similar to the second segment. In its longitudinal direction the band is neither stretchable nor compressible. By virtue of its high flexiblity the band fit the shape of the auricle and/or head of the spectacle wearer when the spectacles are worn in place, so that a large contact area with lower pressures will adjust itself, and any and all pressure points are prevented in this contact area.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1988Date of Patent: May 15, 1990Assignee: Eyemetrics-Systems AgInventors: Wilhelm Anger, Helmut Wiedman
