Patent number: 4176649Abstract: An internal combustion engine and a method of operating same, comprising a combustion chamber having main and auxiliary sections. The air-fuel mixture compressed in the combustion chamber causes turbulence and swirling of the mixture in the auxiliary section. On ignition, the initial combustion rate in the auxiliary section is limited by the centrifugal force on the flame. The jet of gases rushing out of the auxiliary section is not swirled and controls the rate of burning in the main section to reduce peak flame temperature and hence, to reduce CO, NO.sub.x and HC emissions.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1978Date of Patent: December 4, 1979Assignee: Toyota Motor Company, Ltd.Inventor: Bela Karlovitz

Patent number: 4175503Abstract: A light metal die-cast head and cast iron block employ a low volume cooling system which cooperates with the differing thermal conductivity properties of said head and block. The cooling concept eliminates the conventional intricate water jacket and replaces it with continuous grooves which wrap hemi-cylindrically about each combustion cylinder in a thinly spaced relation. The grooves are exposed along their length at the deck surface of either the head or block. The total fluid mass in the system is reduced to as little as 1/5. There are two such grooves in the block which (a) extend from one end thereof to the opposite end, (b) are on opposed sides of the cylinder galleys and (c) have substantially no transverse flow in order to promote laminar or controlled flow.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1978Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Robert P. Patent number: 4167159Abstract: A liquid cooling system for an internal combustion engine includes a conventional radiator and circulating system and pressure cap, the latter having pressure and vacuum relief valve components for limiting the maximum operating pressure of the system and for limiting negative pressures to avoid damage during cooling after engine shutdown. A second, temperature responsive, pressure relief valve provides a lower system relief pressure as long as the temperature of the coolant in the radiator top tank remains below a certain level. When that level is exceeded, a thermally actuated valve excludes the second pressure relief valve from the system and maximum operating pressure is then limited, at a higher level by the valving of the pressure cap. In an alternative embodiment, an infinitely variable pressure relief valve responsive to and controlled by changes in coolant temperature replaces the fixed second pressure relief valve and its thermal actuator.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1977Date of Patent: September 11, 1979Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventor: Bruce L.
