Patent number: 8035050Abstract: A deformable cap for a computer pointing device is provided that may be particularly useful for miniature joystick-type pointing devices such as the TrackPoin™ and ScrollPoint™ devices manufactured by the IBM corporation of Armonk, N.Y. When an operator places a fingertip on the cap, the cap deforms thereby advantageously increasing the surface area of contact between the cap and the fingertip. All embodiments of the cap are placed on an upper portion of a control stick of the pointing device. A first embodiment of the cap includes a bottom support, a disc, a plurality of wire supports, and an elastic cover that overlays the disc and wire supports. An inner surface of the cover may be scored to ensure repeatable deformation of the cap. A spring may be attached to a lower surface of the disc to assist the cap in regaining its original shape once the operator's fingertip is removed.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1999Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Peter Y. Patent number: 7078994Abstract: A coil apparatus is described that incorporates two or more conductors, wound in parallel, following the same path, in intimate physical contact throughout the path but electrically isolated. The current applied to each of the coils can be selected independently. The field generated by the coil, or force on the coil in a magnetic field, is proportional to the algebraic sum of the currents. The power applied to the coil is proportional to the sum of square of the currents. By independently selecting the appropriate current's to apply to each of the conductors, a desired field, or force, can be generated by the coil for any desired power applied to the coil. By judiciously selecting appropriate currents to apply to each of the conductors, a range of fields, or forces, may be selected for which a constant power may be applied to the coil. A constant power enables the coil to operate at a constant temperature.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2004Date of Patent: July 18, 2006Inventors: Glenn Henry Martin, Ronald L Rohde, John O. H. Patent number: 7064644Abstract: A winding for a transformer or a coil having a ribbon electrical conductor and an insulating material layer composed of ribbon insulation material wound jointly to form turns around a winding core. The individual turns of the winding have a predetermined winding angle with respect to a winding axis of the winding core and are disposed such that they partially overlap one another. An insulating layer is inserted between two radially adjacent layers of the turns. Furthermore, a thickness of the insulating layer is locally matched to the voltage difference determined there. In addition, the thickness of the insulating layer is locally matched, the thickness being interchanged in sequence of the method A+B determined there, to the voltage difference between the two relevant radially adjacent layers at the relevant axial point.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2002Date of Patent: June 20, 2006Assignee: ABB T & D Technologies Ltd.Inventors: Benjamin Weber, Karl Zillmann, Thomas J. Patent number: 7060920Abstract: A multi-stage click switch (21) includes a contact circuit member (25) having switch contact portions (41a, 41b, 42a and 42b) disposed respectively in opposed relation to pressing portions (36a, 36b, 37a and 37b) formed on an operating knob (35) mounted on a housing (32), and a rubber switch member (30) having rubber contact portions (28a, 28b, 29a and 29b) which can sequentially close and open the switch contact portions in a multi-stage manner in accordance with the movement of the pressing portions. Each of the rubber contact portions produces a suitable click feeling by a resilient force, produced by elastic deformation of the rubber contact portion, at the time of operating the operating knob (35). The rubber contact portion (28a) has overstroke means by which after its conductive piece (22a, 23a) contacts the opposing switch contact portion (41a, 42a), a click feeling is not produced until the switching operation of the rubber contact portion (28b, 29b) is completed.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2001Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Yazaki CorporationInventors: Yasuyoshi Serizawa, Minoru Kubota

Patent number: 6985061Abstract: An arrangement and a method for use in installation procedures for subsea transformers. A central, hole or tube is included in an encapsulation enclosing a transformer that is to be installed. Three core elements of the transformer are arranged symmetrically around the hole or tube forming a triangle or a delta. The transformer is lowered towards a a foundation placed on the sea floor wherein a guide pin is mounted. When the transformer has found its way to the foundation, the guide pin will enter the tube, and the transformer will slide down onto the guide line pin. The tube is terminated by a funnel shaped opening, thus making it easier not to miss the guide pin by the tube opening. The transformer is horizontally oriented by means of orientation keys localized within the tube.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2001Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Assignee: Vetco Aibel ASInventors: Gunnar Hafskjold, Nils Arne Soelvik

Patent number: 6954131Abstract: An electrical reactor assembly and method of assembly is disclosed. The reactor is formed from a combination of a magnetic T-core and a pair of magnetic L-cores. A plurality of comb-like separators is placed over a vertical portion of the T-core. A wire, with a rectangular cross-section, is wound about the vertical portion of the T-core thereby forming a coil. The comb-like separators electrically isolate the wire from adjacent windings and the T-core. The L-cores are attached to the T-core such that they flank two sides of the coil. A plurality of taps is formed on a side of the coil that is not flanked by one of the L-cores. The taps are formed by extending individual windings further from the T-core than other common windings. Preferably, a hole is formed through the rectangular wire at the taps to provide a secure electrical connection to the wire.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2003Date of Patent: October 11, 2005Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Randall J. Patent number: 6937130Abstract: A magnetic field production system is proposed and has a two-dimensional winding configuration with two windings. The windings are disposed essentially orthogonally with respect to one another and enclose a machine or system. The windings have winding axes that are essentially at right angles to one another, and which are supplied with alternating variables via two feed circuits.
