  • Patent number: 4865486
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a weldless pavement module and a method for making a weldless pavement module. Each of the primary load bearing bars is formed with openings for receiving slotted secondary load bearing bars which are passed through the primary load bearing bars in a substantially horizontal position and which are rotated into a vertical position. The size and shape of the openings and the slots permit the combination of primary load bearing bars and secondary load bearing bars to be skewed to form a nonrectangular parallelogram configuration. Simple tack welds are used to temporarily hold the grating in its desired configuration. A concrete component encases at least the top surface of the grating base member and permanently secures the elements of the grating base member together. The use of tack welds eliminates the requirement that the grating base member be bent into a convex shape prior to welding. A simple flat jig is used.

  • Patent number: 4862959
Abstract: A bit basket mounted on a drilling rig for making and breaking drill string connections. A movable "Y"-like shaped cam is swivelly mounted within a body. Drill string components, such as drill bits and hammers, extend into the basket. The cam has an arcuate engaging face with two tip ends. The cam is thrown so as to engage and hold the component stationary. The connection is then made or broken by the requisite rotation of the drill string by the drilling rig.

  • Patent number: 4861186
Abstract: A covering for an opening in road surfaces, squares or the like comprises a frame and a cover. The cover has a conical, downwardly and inwardly inclined contact surface by which the cover is supported on a bearing surface provided on a support flange of the frame. The bearing surface is also conical and inwardly inclined. At the bearing surface are provided spaced, circumferentially distributed wedge-shaped grooves, which cooperate with lugs on the cover. By means of the inwardly and downwardly inclined surfaces of the lugs and grooves, a self-centering of the cover is obtained. The centering is guided by the lugs. Thus, even in the case of high traffic loads, the cover is not moved from its position.

  • Patent number: 4856932
Abstract: A long-handled float device for leveling wet concrete includes mechanism attaching a handle to a float which is adapted to allow a user to adjust the relative angle between the float and the handle. The adapter connecting the shaft to the float includes a yoke, a yoke shaft coupler, a sleeve through which a sleeve guide shaft passes, and a link arm which connects the sleeve to the yoke. Rotation of the handle about its own axis causes sleeve guide shaft rotation which causes movement of the sleeve along the guide shaft axis which is transmitted to the yoke via a link arm causing the angular relationship between the float and the handle to change. By such adjustment, the user may tilt the front float edge upward when the assembly is pushed away from the user. Upon reversing direction, the user may tilt the back float edge upward.

  • Patent number: 4856600
Abstract: A technique for providing a continuous underground tunnel between first and second spaced-apart points and for installing new cable, pipe or conduit is disclosed herein. This technique utilizes a boring device including means for boring through soil and a thrust conduit which pushes the boring device through the soil from a first starting point to a second end point as the device bores through the soil, whereby to form a tunnel between the two points. Thereafter, the cable to be installed within the tunnel is attached to the front end of the boring device and the latter is pulled back through the tunnel to its starting point by means of the thrust cable, thereby automatically pulling the new cable in place.

  • Patent number: 4856930
Abstract: A pavement having one or more surface layers overlaying one or move base layers disposed on a subgrade with a rigid base layer interposed therebetween. The base layers are composed of paving material. The surface layers are composed of flexible paving material. The bearing member separates the surface layers from the base layers and has about the same longitudinal and transverse dimensions as the surface layers. The bearing member is composed of a substantially aggregate-free or aggregate free material. The bearing member is sufficiently rigid to at least generally prevent any surface layers from conforming, during the useful life of the base layers, to irregularities of the base layers and to move with the surface layers as a unit in response to movement of the base layers.

  • Patent number: 4856931
Abstract: During the laying of a marking line with the aid of at least one paint spray gun (2), profile particles (5) are introduced by means of a profile particle dispenser (4) into the marking composition (3) and thereby enveloped all round by the latter. The dimension of the profile particles (5), which are preferably reflective beads, is greater than the layer thickness of the bare painted line, so that profile elevations are formed. Subsequently, reflective beads (8) which also adhere to the profile elevations are scattered onto this profiled painted line (6), which beads thus ensure a good night visibility in wet conditions and when a water film is present, from which they project. The profile particles (5) can either be directly introduced into the jet of paints emerging from the paint spray gun (2) or, subsequent to the application of a painted line, be scattered thereon and then completely covered with marking composition by means of renewed spraying of a thin film of paint.

  • Patent number: 4854772
Abstract: A method for manufacturing such compactors in different sizes that are meant to be used e.g. on dumping sites for crushing refuse and for compacting the refuse layer. The main parts of the compactors are chassis, engine and cylinder-shaped drums. As per the method according to the invention the compactors are essentially assembled of interchangeable components and modules, of which a varying number is used in assembling compactors of different sizes. The invention also relates to manufacturing a compactor of a compactor series by means of the method. According to the invention the compactor series is mainly assembled by selecting interchangeable drum unit components from three different widths and by using 1, 2, 3 or 4 power transmission gear assemblies, according to the size of the compactor, attached to the ends of the drum unit or units.

  • Patent number: 4854770
Abstract: Material, such as old unsound concrete material, is removed from a work surface by discharging water against such work surface at a pressure of from about 10,000 to about 25,000 psi from a rotating nozzle. During operation, the nozzle traverses the work surface along a series of linear paths and is incrementally moved in a longitudinal direction so as to pass over the work surface in a sequence of preferably overlapping transverse bands. An apparatus for carrying out the method of the invention comprises a support structure usefully in the form of a vehicle having an extendible arm driven by an extension means for incremental movement of that arm in a longitudinal direction. A rotatable nozzle is mounted on a nozzle support in turn secured to the extendible arm for bidirectional movement of the nozzle along a transverse linear path. Casters are also provided for maintaining the nozzle at a predetermined spacing from the work surface during operation of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4852947
Abstract: Operating head assembly, e.g. cutter head of a coal or other mining machine having provision for feeding a supply of water or other fluid to the head during operation has provision for phasing the fluid delivery to limit it to the zone about the head in which the cutting action is taking place dependent on the direction of movement of the head. Delivery jets of the head are fed through individual valve units (22) each having an independently operable hydraulic or other actuator (28), the power input thereto being controlled by apertured timing faces (36, 38) on co-acting parts of the head (11) and body (10), power feed through the timing faces being controlled e.g. in correspondence to the position of change-over valve (44, 46) operating in response to controls which direct movement of the head. In an alternative construction the valve units are actuated mechanically by a camming formation which can be indexed depending on the direction of movement.
