  • Patent number: 4700594
Abstract: A multi-spindle automatic lathe comprises several workpiece spindles driven by separate drive motors through gear units arranged outside the spindle circle. The motors are disposed behind the spindle drum in positions to which the indexing of the spindle drum brings the gear units, so that the gear units can then be coupled to the motors through cone friction clutches comprising parts mounted on the gear units to be displaceable along the axes of the drive output shafts and engage axially non-displaceable parts of the clutches transmitting the drive from said shafts. In the event of axial misalignment each axially non-displaceable clutch part is so connected to its drive output shaft through a cardan shaft that said clutch part can move radially and compensate for the misalignment.

  • Patent number: 4697963
Abstract: The clamping mechanism and companion cutting insert disclosed are designed for use in a milling cutter intended to be ganged with other like cutters on a common rotational axis for the simultaneous milling of multiple slots or grooves. The axially movable clamp for the on-edge inserts employed in the cutter is operated indirectly by an adjusting screw accessible radially from the outside of the ganged cutter bodies without requiring disassembly of the individual cutters to index or replace the cutting inserts. In each of several clamping mechanisms disclosed, the ultimate clamping element or detent takes the form of an arm which is rocked into engagement with the insert at the site of a blind depression in the face of the insert, being drawn in the axial direction by inward adjustment of a radially accessible adjusting screw, and rockable in the reverse direction by a return spring to release the insert as the adjusting screw is backed off.

  • Patent number: 4695208
Abstract: A tool holder which is convertible to perform a variety of machining operations such as threading, turning and grooving comprises a support bar formed with a cavity which receives a mounting block having a seat adapted to support an insert so that the top surface of the insert is exposed and its cutting edge extends outwardly from the seat. The insert is clamped within the seat by a clamping block, which is secured atop the insert by a machine screw. The top edge of the clamping block is formed with a beveled bearing surface which engages the head of the machine screw so that forces are applied to the clamping block upon tightening of the screw which urge the insert downwardly, rearwardly and inwardly against the walls of the mounting block seat.

  • Patent number: 4693146
Abstract: Chip separation is assured while turning work pieces, by causing an oscillating movement of the turning or lathe tool during the work piece rotation. The tool oscillation is controlled in response to the work piece rotation and so that the tool oscillates periodically along or rather relative to a line defined by the feed adavance vectors of the tool movement . The oscillation amplitude corresponds approximately to half the effective feed advance path for each work piece revolution. The wave length of the oscillation has a magnitude such that it itself or an integral multiple thereof, plus a half wave length, is equal to the momentary respective work piece circumference at the instantaneous point of contact between the tool and the work piece. Several ways are possible for imparting an oscillating movement to the tool support or tool supports.

  • Patent number: 4692980
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for fabricating an arcuate seam between two pieces of sheet metal. The method involves a three-step process in which an arcuate standing seam is formed on a first piece of sheet metal, the marginal edge of a second piece of sheet metal is inserted into the pocket of the standing seam, and the pocket of the standing seam and the marginal edge inserted therein are simultaneously bent so that they lie along the surface of the first piece of sheet metal, thus locking together the two pieces of sheet metal. The arcuate standing seam is formed by an apparatus including a plurality of form roller pairs arranged along an arc. Each pair of form rollers has complementary edges that form a nip through which the arcuate edge of the sheet metal workpiece is passed, the shapes of the edges of the successive roller pairs along the arc gradually attaining the shape of the standing seam.
