Another exemplary method of manufacturing a polymer matrix composite electromagnetic shielding structure includes laying out a plurality of dry fiber reinforcements, placing at least one ply between any two of the plurality of dry fiber reinforcements, the ply having a non-woven including a conductive material, applying a resin to the plurality of dry fiber reinforcements and the at least one ply, and curing the resin.

    Abstract: A method for the low temperature joining of similar and/or different phosphate glass by mating at low temperature glass components by an aqueous solution containing phosphorus. In preferred embodiments, the phosphate glasses are polished, cleaned, and brought together with the phosphate-containing solution between the polished surfaces. Vacuum may be applied to assist in making the joint. The composite is optionally heat treated to increase strength, chemical durability, and optical performance. The bond thereby formed has low birefringence, is strong, and is virtually photonically invisible. The joints now make possible, for example, substrates for virtually no loss signal splitters and other high-end optical components at low cost. Large hybrid performs substrates composed of multiple glass components may be prepared and segmented, providing an inexpensive novel substrate for the photonics industry.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for assembling microelectronic devices that have a base die and a conventional wire-bond die stacked on the base die. In one embodiment of a method in accordance with the invention, a base die is placed on a substrate and then a first stacked die is subsequently stacked on the base die. The first stacked die is stacked on the base die in a single pass through a die attach machine without first storing or otherwise processing the base die/substrate assembly in a separate machine. The stacked die, moreover, can be stacked onto the base die before heating the base die to reflow a solder or otherwise attach the base die to the substrate. After stacking the first stacked die on the base die, the complete die assembly can be heated to (a) secure the base die to the substrate, and (b) secure the first stacked die to the base die.

    Abstract: A nonwoven fabric having characteristics resembling woven and knitted fabrics is produced by extruding a plurality of plural component fibers, where each fiber includes first and second polymer components with the first polymer component having a degree of shrinkage when subjected to heat. A nonwoven web of the extruded fibers is formed on a web forming surface and bonded. The bonded web of fibers are post-bond treated to shrink at least the first polymer component and separate at least a portion of the second polymer component from the first polymer component utilizing any combination of heat, mechanical agitation and dissolving of fiber components. The resultant nonwoven fabric has a texture, drape and feel of woven and knitted fabrics.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to fabrication methods and apparatus for irrigating medical catheters. Such catheters include at least one section of standard thermoplastic catheter tubing coupled to a section of porous tubing (e.g., ePTFE and the like). A source of fluid couples to the porous portion of tubing to dispense diverse fluids. The manufacturing technique overcomes the inability of such porous material to liquefy and/or bond to most available adhesives by creating a mechanical-based coupling. One aspect of the present invention involves pre-treatment of a portion of a porous material such as ePTFE; that is, a “pre-imbibing” process is employed wherein the ePTFE is saturated with a solution of solvent and dissolved thermoplastic resin. After the solution evaporates a resin-based interstitial residue provides suitable structure that fuses to adjacent thermoplastic material during application of heat, such as during thermal bonding.

The deck is formed after treating the layers of material for between one-half hour to six hours under a vacuum at a temperature ranging from ambient temperature to 600 degrees F., depending upon the manufacturing process, whether using a hand layup process, or multiple layers of graphite cloth containing a laminating resin (“pre-preg” material). An additional lower layer of fiberglass, which can become the deck bottom, may be used in both processes. The laminated skateboard deck has properties that are at least comparable to those of wooden skateboard decks.
