Patent number: 8417702Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide a system and method for associating data records in multiple languages within a single hub. As a record comes in from an information source coupled to the hub, it is associated with a particular language at a core layer. The hub maps each language one-to-one to a member type. For each data record of a particular member type, unique derivation code is utilized to perform standardization and bucketing at a derived layer. A weight may be used to balance the richness of languages so that data records in different languages can have the same statistical meaning. Since attributes are standardized with respect to a language of a data record, appropriate languages or script can be passed along with the data record. The hub can then match the data record to the optimum algorithm(s) for entity processing at an entity layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2008Date of Patent: April 9, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Douglas Scott Harger, Scott Schumacher

Patent number: 8392455Abstract: Methods and systems for solving a target value search problem using a multi-interval heuristic are presented. The methods and system identity a path, or paths, in a graph, whereby a connection graph is created and range sets are generated for each vertex in the connection graph. Range sets include one or more intervals. Thereafter, a best search is performed to identify a path, or paths, from a starting vertex to a goal vertex having a path value closest to a target value.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2009Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: Palo Alto Research Center IncorporatedInventors: Tim Schmidt, Lukas D. Patent number: 8356060Abstract: Techniques are described herein for automatically selecting the compression techniques to be used on tabular data. A compression analyzer gives users high-level control over the selection process without requiring the user to know details about the specific compression techniques that are available to the compression analyzer. Users are able to specify, for a given set of data, a “balance point” along the spectrum between “maximum performance” and “maximum compression”. The point thus selected is used by the compression analyzer in a variety of ways. For example, in one embodiment, the compression analyzer uses the user-specified balance point to determine which of the available compression techniques qualify as “candidate techniques” for the given set of data. The compression analyzer selects the compression technique to use on a set of data by actually testing the candidate compression techniques against samples from the set of data.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2010Date of Patent: January 15, 2013Assignee: Oracle International CorporationInventors: Vineet Marwah, Vikram Kapoor, Amit Ganesh, Jesse Kamp, Sachin Kulkarni, Roger Macnicol, Kam Shergill, Manosiz Bhattacharyya

Patent number: 8341172Abstract: A method and apparatus for defining and processing aggregate data is disclosed. Using database abstraction techniques, a set of logical fields may be used to compose queries of a set of underlying physical data sources. In one embodiment, a logical field may represent an aggregate data value calculated from the elements appearing in a column of a relational table in an underlying physical data source. The elements may be divided into to subsets to calculate multiple aggregate values. An abstract derived entity is a data object present in a database abstraction model that may be accessed as though it were a relational table contained in an underlying physical data source. In one embodiment, columns of the table defined by the abstract derived entity may be populated with aggregate data values joined to other data as specified by a composition rule included in the definition of the abstract derived entity.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2004Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Richard D. Patent number: 8275800Abstract: A spatial feature is considered for storage in a database system running on a computer. The spatial feature includes a polygon, P. The polygon includes an outer ring, OR, and the area within the outer ring. The polygon includes an interior ring contained within the polygon. The computer removes the interior ring from the polygon. The computer determines a line along which to split the polygon without regard for the location of the inner ring within the polygon. The computer splits the polygon into two polygons, SP1 and SP2, along the line. The computer applies the interior ring to the two split polygons by invoking a point set difference between the interior ring and the two split polygons. The computer stores the split polygons in the database system on the computer.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2010Date of Patent: September 25, 2012Assignee: Teradata US, Inc.Inventors: Kevin D. Patent number: 8122035Abstract: Transactions with respect to database operations are fingerprinted by associating transaction identifiers with logged information about those database operations. An SQL query is obtained prior to its evaluation by a database engine. A transaction identifier to be associated with the SQL query is also obtained. The SQL query is then modified to generate a modified SQL query, wherein the modified SQL query includes a WHERE clause that contains an expression that always evaluates to a logical true value, and wherein the expression contains the transaction identifier. The modified SQL query is then sent to the database engine for evaluation within the data processing system. When the processing of the modified SQL query is logged with a copy of the modified SQL query, the logged information contains a copy of the transaction identifier.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2005Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Edward T.
