Abstract: A dialed telephone connection can be implemented as an end-to-end digital connection by virtue of switched voice transmission facilities becoming more prevalent. If such a connection is detected, it is possible to transmit digital data over the connection at a much higher rate than using analog technology. A dialed voice call is emulated to set up such a connection and the connection is then tested to determine if it is end-to-end digital. If so, high speed digital data can be passed. If not, the connection is broken and then reestablished repeatedly until such a digital connection is found. In one embodiment, the calls are alternately initiated from each of the two parties involved in attempts to increase the likelihood of achieving an end-to-end digital connection. If no such connection can be obtained after a reasonable number of tries, an analog communication session can be established.
Abstract: A field coil signal transmission and tag power consumption measurement circuit for use in an inductive tag reader system. The circuit is coupled to an oscillator which provides a drive signal to a differential driver. The driver transforms the clock signal into first and second complementary drive signals. The drive signals are coupled to a field coil through a plurality of capacitors for inductively producing an output power signal. The capacitors are differentially coupled to the coil, so that each input of the coil is coupled to one of the clock signals through a separate capacitor. A bridge rectifier is coupled to the field coil opposite the capacitors for producing an output comprising a direct current (DC) element and an alternating current (AC) element superimposed on the DC element. A resistance-capacitance (R-C) filter, coupled to the bridge rectifier, provides a filtered rectifier output signal.
Abstract: The Active Sound Absorber of the invention is based on an electroacoustical transceiver defined as a bilateral electroacoustical transducer acting as both a diaphragm actuator and motion sensor, and an associated mutual inductance discriminator, in a electroacoustical positive feedback system. Selected embodiment of such a system is an unvented hearing aid where the Active Sound Absorber combats the occlusion effect.

Abstract: A facsimile system includes: a telephone apparatus; a facsimile receiving device for detecting a CNG (Calling Tone) signal, which follows a call request signal from a telephone exchange, on a telephone line, and receiving a facsimile data through the telephone line if the CNG signal is detected; a switching device for selectively connecting the telephone line to either the facsimile receiving device or the telephone apparatus; a device for controlling the switching device such that the switching device connects the telephone line to the telephone apparatus if the CNG signal is not detected by the facsimile receiving device while the telephone line is connected to the facsimile receiving device; and a device for generating a control signal if the CNG signal is not detected by the facsimile receiving device.
Abstract: A system for delivering audio advertising messages to shopping carts moving through a plurality of spatially defined transmission zones arranged in the aisles of a store. In the illustrative embodiment, a plurality of transmitters of compact construction are each attached to a shelf within the store. Each shelf transmitter has a spatially defined transmission zone of selected geometry and predetermined dimensions so as to occupy an assigned region of space within one of the aisles in the store. When any one of these transmitters detects a shopping cart residing in its spatially defined transmission zone, the transmitter transmits over its spatially defined transmission zone, a modulated signal carrying an audio message provided by a playback mechanism within the transmitter. A receiver on the detected shopping cart demodulates the received modulated carrier signal and produces an audible signal of the audio message provided by the playback mechanism in the transmitter.

Abstract: Methods for improving modem performance and apparatus incorporating the methods are provided. The preferred methods comprise measuring the signal/noise ratio and intermodulation distortion (IMD) relating to signals being transmitted over a channel, and adjusting the transmitting power of the transmitting modem below a maximum permissable power in response to the measurements in order to reduce the error rate of the data transmission, the error rate being a function of both the signal/noise ratio and the IMD. Theoretically, the power can be adjusted to an optimal level, as the decrease in power increases the error rate due to signal/noise ratio according to a first function, but decreases the error rate due to IMD according to a second function. A first preferred manner of determining the final power level to be utilized is to calibrate a modem according to the techniques (e.g., Trellis precoding, etc.
Abstract: In a cellular radio system including a plurality of cells (e.g. cell sectors or micro cells) (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11) each normally using a respective channel for interference reduction purposes, a number of the cells are arranged in groups (6) and in the event of a cell associated with equipment moving within a group (6), all cells (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11) of that group use a common channel whereby to facilitate handover between them.
