Abstract: A liquid crystal display includes a gate bus line, a gate electrode extending from the gate bus line, and a gate pad placed at an end portion of the gate bus line with a first conductive material formed on a substrate. A first insulating material, an intrinsic semiconductor material, a doped semiconductor material and a second conductive material are sequentially deposited on the gate bus line, the gate electrode, and the gate pad. The second conductive material is patterned to form a source bus line, a source electrode extending from the source bus line, a drain electrode, and a source pad at an end portion of the source bus line. A semiconductor layer, a gate insulating layer, and a gate protecting layer covering a first portion of the gate pad are formed by simultaneously patterning the intrinsic semiconductor material and the first insulating material.

  • Patent number: 6034758
Abstract: A passive dot matrix liquid crystal display having improved visibility comprises plural column electrodes on a first plate interconnected by a plurality of electrode bridges to form groups of interconnected column electrodes, wherein the number of electrodes in each electrode group is equal to or less than the inverse of the multiplex ratio of the display. The display also comprises plural row electrodes interconnected by a plurality of electrode bridges to form groups of interconnected row electrodes, wherein the number of groups of interconnected row electrodes is equal to the multiplex ratio of the display. By grouping the row and column electrodes into such groups, the multiplex ratio of the display can be reduced to levels substantially below the multiplex ratios of conventional passive dot matrix Liquid Crystal Displays, thereby significantly enhancing visibility of the display.

  • Patent number: 6034748
Abstract: With a conventional thin film transistor comprising a plurality of series-connected thin film transistors each having a plurality of LDD structures, leakage current can be decreased to a large effect but the area of an element can hardly be reduced. By connecting gate electrodes (15) of a plurality of thin film transistors only with an implanted region (13b) which is formed by implanting an impurity at a low concentration into a semiconductor thin film employed as an active layer, both reduction in element size and decrease in leakage current can be realized.

  • Patent number: 6034753
Abstract: Disclosed are super broadband circularly polarizing film materials and novels methods of fabricating and using the same. The circularly polarizing materials are made from polymerizable CLC film material having a cholesteric order, in which a liquid crystal material, such as a nematic liquid crystal material, is distributed in a non-linear fashion across the thickness of the film in a plurality of liquid crystal-rich and liquid crystal-depleted sites in the CLC polymer. The pitch of the helices of the CLC molecules in the polyermized CLC material varies in a non-linear (e.g. exponential) manner along the depth dimension (i.e. transverse to the surface) thereof. The resulting circularly polarizing materials have reflection and transmission characteristics over bands of operation approaching 2000 nm. Depending on the final spiral structure of the polymerizable CLC materials utilized, the CLC circularly polarizing materials reflect either left-handed or right-handed circularly polarized light.

  • Patent number: 6016834
Abstract: A dual tank storage system for fuel having gaseous and liquid phases where one tank is a main storage tank and the other is an expansion tank. The system has a valve assembly on the exterior of the system for permitting fuel to flow from the main storage tank to the expansion tank in order to relieve pressure in the main storage tank. The valve assembly permits only the main storage tank to be filled. The fact that fuel can flow from the main storage compartment to the expansion compartment to relieve pressure from the main storage compartment allows the main storage tank to be filled to 100% capacity. The valve assembly includes a valve chamber and a valve plunger movable in the chamber between a normal operating position and a tank filling position. A coil spring biases the plunger towards the normal operating position. A filling port for fuel leads to the valve chamber which opens into a port of the storage tank. Fuel is drawn only from the expansion tank.

  • Patent number: 5978065
Abstract: A liquid crystal is dropped on one end portion of a bottom substrate that is coated with a sealing material in an outer peripheral portion. After a top substrate is laid on the bottom substrate, the liquid crystal is expanded from the one end portion of the bottom substrate toward the other end portion. If necessary, an air ejecting opening is formed in the sealing material at a position located in the other end portion of the bottom substrate. The surfaces of the top and bottom substrates may be formed with grooves for accommodating an excessive part of the liquid crystal at positions inside the sealing member. As a result, no air bubbles remain in the liquid crystal even if the charging of the liquid crystal is performed at the atmospheric pressure.
