  • Patent number: 5197227
Abstract: A dental curet and sharpening machine has been developed for complete mechanical guidance of the instruments during the sharpening procedure. Double-ended dental curets comprising cutting blades, shanks, and a handle have been designed so that regardless of the instrument's rake angle, the arc center of the toe on the face of the cutting blade which is to be sharpened lies on the longitudinal center axis of the instrument and at a constant distance from the reference points on the instrument handle. The sharpening machine comprises a base, an electrical motor with a rotating sharpening stone, and an instrument guide unit. The instrument guide unit can position the blade face of a curet of any rake angle in a horizontal plane with the arc center of the toe on the blade's face coincident with a vertical axis about which the guide unit is swung while the blade is engaged with the rotating stone during the cutting procedure.

  • Patent number: 5197453
Abstract: A two-tier groove cutting circular saw blade includes a circular middle core having sectors defined about the periphery, a pair of side cores disposed adjacent opposite surfaces of the middle core and having lands defined about their outer peripheries, and pluralities of outer and inner cutting segments are secured to the respective middle core sectors and side core lands. Each side core is smaller in diameter than the middle core such that the side core lands and inner cutting segments secured thereon are displaced radially inwardly from the middle core sectors and outer cutting segments secured thereon, thereby adapting the blade for cutting a narrow lower tier and a wider upper tier of the two-tier groove. The blade also includes core anti-undercut features provided on the middle and side cores at predetermined locations thereon for defining exit paths for flow of material particles generated from the cutting of the groove and flushing of the groove by fluid coolant.

  • Patent number: 5195277
Abstract: A blade sharpener which has two elements, one of which is a hand-held member, and the other of which is a follower member is disclosed. The two members are pivotally secured each to the other, and secured at variable preselected pivot points so that adjustments can be made for the particular skate, and for the particular cross-section of the blade desired at various points along the power toe section, neutral under foot section, and turning heel section. Means are provided interiorly of the two members to optionally secure a file or a neutral member such as a wooden dowel to the end that varying portions of the blade can be sharpened while moving the hand-held member back and forth longitudinal of the blade. Guide means are supplied on both members for securing the relationship of the file or abrading member to the blade in a preselected centralized orientation.

  • Patent number: 5195280
Abstract: A apparatus for mixing separately contained media such as would be used in a wet abrasive blasting operation comprises a receptacle (10) for a liquid/abrasive medium, a receptacle (11) for a liquid, and a delivery line (20) along which pressurized fluid is adapted to be fed. The receptacles (10,11) communicate via pipes (22,23) with the delivery line (20) so that the liquid and the liquid/abrasive medium are entrained by the pressurized fluid. The receptacles communicate with each other via a hole (14) to balance the fluid pressure system between them and a means (15,19) is also provided to deliver pressurized fluid into at least one of the receptacles (10,11) in order to substantially balance the fluid pressure system between the receptacles (10,11) and the delivery line (20) and to facilitate outflow of the liquid/abrasive medium and the liquid into the entraining fluid.

  • Patent number: 5194062
Abstract: An apparatus and method for processing and rewinding a web made of easily stretchably deformable plastic film or the like. The web is drawn from a supply roll assembly by a series of synchronously driven draw and transfer rolls and directly delivered to a rewind roll. The rewind roll is positively driven at a speed greater than speed imparted to the web by the draw and transfer rolls. However, the rewind roll is in peripheral contact with the last of the series of draw and transfer rolls so that the processed web is immediately transferred from the last web moving roll to the rewind roll, while the last roll exerts a drag on the rewind roll to control and match the speed of the rewind roll to the speed of the moving web.

  • Patent number: 5193518
Abstract: A portable wire saw for cutting materials such as stone, concrete, asphalt and the like such as highway lane barriers. The portable wire saw includes a frame having a base on which is mounted a power source. Attached to the base is a plurality of wheels for easy portable movement of the wire saw. At least one of the wheels also provides a pivot point for the frame so that the wire saw can be pivoted between a cutting position and a non-cutting position. The power source drives a wire saw blade carried on a triangular support structure consisting of two pulleys and a drive wheel. The drive wheel is operably connected to the power source. The position of the pulleys is capable of being adjusted relative to the drive wheel. In a preferred embodiment the triangular support structure is arranged in a vertical orientation with the upper pulley functioning to keep the return path of the wire saw blade from having to pass through the material being cut.

  • Patent number: 5188582
Abstract: An apparatus for forming thin plastic, film, aluminum, paper, glassine and other similar material into a double folded "z" shape as shown and described. In this apparatus, a first ramp folds the material initially in one direction, and a continuously variable die forms the second bend of a "z" shape of the material edge. In order to maintain accuracy, an initial crease is placed at the location of the first fold. The material is drawn through the die by any suitable roller or drawing means which can pull the material through the die. There are no rollers within the edge forming die.

  • Patent number: 5184995
Abstract: A blank cutting technique in a process for manufacturing containers such as paperboard cups, canisters and cartons provides a flaired edge which, in one embodiment, forms a precurl to facilitate the formation of a completed brim curl and in another embodiment, is used to provide a flaired edge on a lid flap of a carton. In the latter case, the flaired edge which is created assists in insertion of the lid flap into the carton opening and creates an improved seal. In the blank cutting technique, stock material is positioned on a die cutting bed across a stepped portion. The stock material is cut along a cutting line offset from and substantially parallel to the stepped portion and against a lower surface of the die cutting bed defined by the stepped portion during the cutting operation, whereby the flaired edge is formed.

  • Patent number: 5183026
Abstract: A grinding machine having an angular type grinding wheel and a dressing apparatus therefor. The grinding wheel is formed with first and second grinding surfaces usable for grinding a cylindrical surface and shoulder end surface of a workpiece, respectively, and first and second reference surfaces parallel to the first and second grinding surfaces, respectively. The positions of the first and second reference surfaces and the first and second grinding surfaces are detected with touch bars before each dressing operation so as to obtain a first distance between the first grinding surface and first reference surface, and a second distance between the second grinding surface and second reference surface. After that, a first dressing amount for dressing the first grinding surface and a second dressing amount for dressing the second grinding surface are so determined that the first distance and the second distance would have a predetermined constant relationship after dressing operation.

  • Patent number: 5181375
Abstract: A method for producing steel alloy gears comprises the steps of providing a gear with a shape in which its tooth surfaces have excess material requiring subsequent removal; grinding the gear's tooth root and flank surfaces to a final finish shape; and subsequently performing a final heat treat to the ground gear to provide a hardened surface layer extending at least to a minimum depth required by the function of the gear. The grinding is advantageously accomplished by cubic boron nitride grinding. The final heat treat is controlled so that the hardened surface layer extends to a depth not substantially greater than the minimum depth required by the function of the gear. The final heat treat also relieves stresses caused by the preceding steps and also imposes beneficial stresses.
