  • Patent number: 4609344
Abstract: A yarn heating chamber is disclosed which is adapted for thermally processing an advancing yarn. The chamber comprises first and second members each having a discontinuity in the form of a groove, shoulder or the like in a surface thereof, and the members are movably mounted with respect to each other between an operative position wherein the discontinuities are positioned relative to each other to define a relatively narrow yarn passage, and a threading position defining an enlarged opening to facilitate threading. Also, heating means is provided for introducing saturated water vapor into the yarn passage in the operative position, and the surfaces of the two members are in substantial heat exchange relation in both the operative and threading positions, so that the temperature of the two members remains substantially constant during a yarn threading operation.

  • Patent number: 4608764
Abstract: The particles of the particulate material to be dried are cooled before the drying operation proper, or in the initial phase thereof, to a temperature low enough to make the liquid to be extracted solidify. At least the drying operation proper is carried out in a space bounded by a container, in which a gas, more particularly air, is passed through the particles. While in said space, the particles are subjected to motion, for example, they are whirled by the gas to form a whirling layer. The temperature of the gas is adjusted to have at least a considerable part of the drying operation take place by sublimation, the heat energy required for the sublimiation being supplied to the particles at least in part by the gas passed through them. In this way, the particulate material may be dried with care and nevertheless in relatively large batches, and with limited time expenditure.

  • Patent number: 4609037
Abstract: A first thermally conductive plate holds an article and heats the article with heating elements in the plate. Parallel rails support the first plate above a base. Cooling passageways for coolant flow are in a second thermally conductive plate. The second plate is supported spaced from the base by a shaft in a chamber of the second plate and a spring. During the heating phase, the second plate is spaced apart from the first plate. During the cooling phase, the second plate is urged by the spring into contact with the first plate, so that the second plate acts as a heat sink for the first plate. Vacuum suction and an annular elastomer seal around the top rim of the second plate clamp the first and second plates together in thermal communication. Vacuum suction in the chamber retracts the second plate from the first plate.

  • Patent number: 4607649
Abstract: A coin sorter is disclosed in which a flexible rotating disc opposes a stationary plate that has surfaces which form a series of guide surfaces which are spaced from the disc a distance less than the thickness of coins to be sorted. Coins are deposited on the rotating disc through a central opening in the plate. The guide surfaces form the coins into a single layer and single file at the periphery of the disc. The coins in the single file are pinched between the disc and plate with their inner edges against an outwardly facing spiral shoulder and with their outer edges projecting beyond the perimeter of the disc. The coins in the single file are engaged, in descending order of diameter, by a series of stationary plows spaced about the periphery of the disc. When engaged by a plow, each coin is removed from the pinch between the rotating disc and the plate and is sorted off from the disc at that point.
