  • Patent number: 5451070
Abstract: A treadle drive system operates comfortably in a standing or seated position with two toe or heel end pivoting treadles. A flexible drive line (chain, cable, belt, etc.) from each treadle drives a pair of forward biased driving rings (having sprockets, pulleys, belt wheels, etc.) concentrically encircling and driving a hollow drive cylinder. Concentrically encircling the cylinder, a driven ring in turn drives a rotating device. A positive engagement clutch between the hollow cylindrical hub and the driven ring allows the driven ring to be engaged or disengaged from the drive cylinder. Opposing holes transversely through the hollow drive cylinder engage pins on outer ends of a V-shaped spring. The pins are normally engaged in mating openings on an interior surface of the driven ring. A push-pull shaft with a cup having a rigid rim pushes against the sloping sides of the spring to disengage the pins from the driven shaft only. Pulling the shaft releases the spring reengaging the pins in the driven shaft.

  • Patent number: 5423183
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission includes a pump (258) driven by an input shaft (256) against a wedge-shaped swashplate (260). Hydraulic fluid pressurized in the pump flows through ports (402) in a pump cylinder block (422) into kidney-shaped slots (406) in the swashplate (260), and from there flows into and pressurizes a series of cylinders (394) in a motor cylinder block (366). The pump and motor exert first and second components of torque on a swashplate (260) in the rotational direction on the input shaft (256), and the hydraulic system pressure in the swashplate slots exerts a third component of torque in the same direction on the swashplate (260). The third torque component is a product of the hydraulic system pressure and the differential area of the two ends of the high pressure slot (406P) at the narrow and thick sides of the wedge-shaped swashplate (260).

  • Patent number: 5415385
Abstract: Groups of differently printed advertising inserts are collated into stacks of at least two inserts each, and the stacks are advanced along a main predetermined path for feeding to a host machine having continuously moving pockets which contain newspaper jackets and which receive the collated stacks of inserts in order to marry the inserts and the jackets. Initially, at least two relatively tall stacked bundles of inserts are located above and are spaced laterally from the main path. Inserts are stripped from the tall bundles, are advanced laterally toward the main path and are stacked in two relatively short queues located above and spaced along the path. A first vacuum belt strips inserts from the upstream queue and advances such inserts in an upstream direction as a running shingle, which then reverses directions and proceeds downstream. As an incident thereto, successive leading inserts are stripped from the shingle and are advanced in spaced relation along the main path toward the host machine.

  • Patent number: 5407186
Abstract: Image forming apparatus including a sheet finish-processing unit for finish-processing sheets discharged from a copying machine to which the unit is laterally positioned and stored thereby into a plurality of stacks. A sheet stack finish-processing mechanism of the unit, incorporating a stapler, is shiftable by an associated drive mechanism in the widthwise direction along the adjacent end of a positioned stack in storage. A sheet stack handling mechanism therein draws the end of the positioned stack into a finishing locale of the finish-processing mechanism, and subsequent to a finishing (stapling) operation, returns the finished sheet stack into storage. Thereupon, the stack is transversely discharged frontward of the image forming apparatus from storage, during which operation a subsequent finishing operation is concurrently executable; by such discharge a number of copy stacks greater than the number of stacking storages can be processed.

  • Patent number: 5400693
Abstract: A brake pressure booster for a vehicle brake system comprises a vacuum booster which includes two chambers, the low pressure chamber (16) of which is evacuated during actuation in a brake pressure boosting fashion, while a pressure higher than that in the low pressure chamber is adjustable in the high pressure chamber (14) by means of a control valve (28), the higher pressure exceeding the external atmospheric pressure. That is accomplished by a mechanical regulating valve (12) connected upstream of the control valve (28). Upon connection of a pressure source (18) to the high pressure chamber (14), a valve seat controlling access from the pressure source (18) to the valve opens before another valve seat closes that controls the connection between an inlet (24) into the valve and the high pressure chamber (14).

  • Patent number: 5398919
Abstract: Paper sheets are fed in a first direction until the sheets abut a stop plate and fall downwardly to form a stack. A sensor detects a sign on a last sheet in a group and when that sheet falls on the stack, the entire group of sheets is transported away in a first direction generally perpendicular to the feed direction or a second direction opposite to the first direction. To aid in the transportation away, two pairs of drive rollers are mounted on either side of the transport which grasp the stack of sheets and transports them away from the stacking area.
