  • Patent number: 4239577
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making wood laminates from a plurality of wood plies having relatively high moisture contents. By employing a center ply having a moisture content of at least 3%, relatively high moisture content plies can be employed in the preparation of wood laminates without experiencing defective panels due to the blow out of steam built up during pressing. The outer plies can have moisture contents of as high as 25%. Additionally, interior plies other than the center ply can also have moisture contents similar to that of the center ply or can have moisture contents below that of the outer plies.

  • Patent number: 4239581
Abstract: A burner has a flame chamber formed by flat upper and lower walls connected by side walls and a front end wall, with a fuel inlet for connection to a fuel source and with an open rear end. A handle is connected with one side of the burner for inserting it between the overlapping layers of a lap joint of fusible roofing sheets for sliding it forward along the joint while flame issues from the rear end of the burner to fuse the overlapping layers together. A hold-down member normally is spaced above the burner, but a device is provided for lowering that member into close proximity to the burner for engaging the upper surface of the upper layer of the lap joint and holding that layer down on the burner as the burner is moved forward. The apparatus may also include a second shorter flame chamber disposed above the front portion of the other chmaber, with openings between them for flow of gas and flames from the lower chamber to the upper one.

  • Patent number: 4239580
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for applying polyester resin impregnated fabric onto a smooth surface. Fabric is impregnated with polyester resin and pressed onto a flat or curved surface by means of vibrating rolls which may be remotely controlled to conform with the contours of the surface. Vibration of the rolls removes entrained air bubbles and permits complete application of the impregnated fabric in a single pass of the apparatus. The fabric is dispensed, impregnated and applied from a frame which is suspended from an overhead gantry and which may be moved in three dimensions. On the frame are mounted a roll of fabric, an impregnator for impregnating the fabric with resin, and a series of pneumatically vibrated rollers for applying the impregnated fabric. Operation is controlled from a console attached to the frame.

  • Patent number: 4239572
Abstract: A cover sheet is disposed over a recess in a work table. A folding apparatus, including an edge folder and edge erector is disposed over the recess and lowered until the edge erector is in the recess. The edge erector includes horizontally movable plates which are moved outwardly against the edges of the recess to erect the marginal edges of the sheet. The edge folder has downwardly depending, horizontally moving members. The edge folder is lowered until the members touch the work table after which the members are moved inwardly to fold the erected marginal edges of the sheet horizontally over the plates. The plates are then withdrawn while the edge folder members are maintained in contact with the folded marginal edges, and high frequency heat applied to weld the folded marginal edges to the sheet. After the welding is completed the edge erector and edge folder are raised to their initial position and the members are returned to their outward positions.

  • Patent number: 4234368
Abstract: Two coaxial metal pipes, whose confronting extremities are each provided with a plurality of peripheral ribs of staggered height separated by two or more peripheral grooves, are interconnected by a coupling sleeve of fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin subdivided into several coaxially interleaved and independently deformable cylindrical shells each terminating in a pair of internal beads engaged in a respective peripheral pipe groove. The shells, increasing in axial tensile strength from the innermost to the outermost one, are preferably separated from one another by interposed antibonding layers of thermoplastic resin. A resinous filler can be inserted between the pipe extremities for electrically insulating them from each other. The shells of the coupling sleeve can be formed by coiling resin-coated filaments around the pipe axis, advantageously with application of an antifriction layer on each inner shell before the thermosetting material thereof has been fully hardened.
