  • Patent number: 10152342
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for allowing a virtual application and a virtual desktop to interact. In one embodiment, the virtual application is moved inside the virtual desktop to eliminate the need to switch between user interfaces for the virtual desktop and for the virtual application. In response to a user dragging the user interface of a first virtual desktop interface (VDI) client connected to the virtual application into the user interface of a second VDI client connected to the virtual desktop, information is collected about a first virtual machine (VM) in which the virtual application runs, and the information is transmitted to the second VDI client. The second VDI client passes such information via a virtual channel to a second VM in which the virtual desktop runs, and a remote launcher in the second VM launches a third VDI client that connects to the first VM based on the information.

  • Patent number: 10127088
Abstract: Socket scheduling modes may prevent non-uniform memory access effects from negatively affecting performance of synchronization mechanisms utilizing hardware transactional memory. Each mode may indicate whether a thread may execute a critical section on a particular socket. For example, under transitional lock elision, locks may include a mode indicating whether threads may acquire or elide the lock on a particular socket. Different modes may be used alternately to prevent threads from starving. A thread may only execute a critical section on a particular socket if allowed by the current mode. Otherwise, threads may block until allowed to execute the critical section, such as after the current mode changes. A profiling session may, for a running workload, iterate over all possible modes, measuring statistics pertaining to the execution of critical sections (e.g., the number of lock acquisitions and/or elisions), to determine the best performing modes for the particular workload.

  • Patent number: 10104053
Abstract: The system and method described herein for providing annotated service blueprints in an intelligent workload management system may include a computing environment having a model-driven, service-oriented architecture for creating collaborative threads to manage workloads. In particular, the management threads may converge information for creating annotated service blueprints to provision and manage tessellated services distributed within an information technology infrastructure. For example, in response to a request to provision a service, a service blueprint describing one or more virtual machines may be created. The service blueprint may then be annotated to apply various parameters to the virtual machines, and the annotated service blueprint may then be instantiated to orchestrate the virtual machines with the one or more parameters and deploy the orchestrated virtual machines on information technology resources allocated to host the requested service, thereby provisioning the requested service.

  • Patent number: 9990233
Abstract: Technologies for partial binary translation on multi-core platforms include a shared translation cache, a binary translation thread scheduler, a global installation thread, and a local translation thread and analysis thread for each processor core. On detection of a hotspot, the thread scheduler first resumes the global thread if suspended, next activates the global thread if a translation cache operation is pending, and last schedules local translation or analysis threads for execution. Translation cache operations are centralized in the global thread and decoupled from analysis and translation. The thread scheduler may execute in a non-preemptive nucleus, and the translation and analysis threads may execute in a preemptive runtime. The global thread may be primarily preemptive with a small non-preemptive nucleus to commit updates to the shared translation cache. The global thread may migrate to any of the processor cores. Forward progress is guaranteed. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

  • Patent number: 9880870
Abstract: A virtualization management component of a particular host at a virtualized computing determines that a packet duplication phase of a migration of a virtual machine from a source host to the particular host has begun. The virtualization management component detects that a migrated version of the virtual machine, instantiated at the particular virtualization host, has generated a baseline packet directed to a destination address. The virtualization management component sends a first encapsulation packet comprising the baseline packet to an encapsulation intermediary associated with the destination address. The virtualization management component sends a second encapsulation packet comprising the baseline packet to the source virtualization host, with a directive to forward the second encapsulation packet to the encapsulation intermediary.

  • Patent number: 9858102
Abstract: A method and an information handling system (IHS) provide data path failover for a single root input/output virtualization network interface controller (SR-IOV NIC) card. According to one aspect, an IOV failover module (FM) enables a physical function (PF) driver in a service virtual machine (VM) to access physical resources and configure virtual functions (VFs) within the SR-IOV NIC card. The IOVFM monitors data paths established between VMs and VFs. If a data path fails, the IOVFM initiates a failover by migrating a VF coupled to a failed data path to an alternate VF. However, if a threshold number of consecutive failed migration attempts occurs and the SR-IOV NIC card has an additional and available port(s), the IOVFM migrates the VF to an alternate VF of the available port. The IOVFM enables the VM to access and configure the alternate VF of the available port via a failover data path.

  • Patent number: 9804888
Abstract: Systems and methods for implementing constrained data-driven parallelism may provide programmers with mechanisms for controlling the execution order and/or interleaving of tasks spawned during execution. For example, a programmer may define a task group that includes a single task, and the single task may define a direct or indirect trigger that causes another task to be spawned (e.g., in response to a modification of data specified in the trigger). Tasks spawned by a given task may be added to the same task group as the given task. A deferred keyword may control whether a spawned task is to be executed in the current execution phase or its execution is to be deferred to a subsequent execution phase for the task group. Execution of all tasks executing in the current execution phase may need to be complete before the execution of tasks in the next phase can begin.
