  • Patent number: 5937716
Abstract: A tool is provided for preventing bolts from turning while the nut on the bolt is being loosened or tightened. The tool comprises opposed handle members each operatively connected to a jaw. The first jaw comprises a central longitudinally extending member designed to engage the head of a bolt when the tool is locked in place. The second jaw comprises a U-shaped member having two forked portions positioned on opposite sides of the plane of the first jaw member and being spaced apart sufficiently to receive the nut of a bolt therebetween when the tool is locked in place. Adjustable, releasable locking means are provided for locking the tool in place so as to prevent backout of the bolt while the nut on the bolt is being loosened or tightened.

  • Patent number: 5931065
Abstract: A hand tool for providing telescoping and axial repositioning of an elongate shaft relative to a handle. The handle includes a first closed end and a second open end which defines a hollowed and axially extending interior within which is securably mounted an intermediate sleeve. The elongate shaft includes a first end which is inserted within the handle and sleeve and a second fastener bit engaging end. A plurality of individual apertures are formed along a selected surface of the elongate shaft and are arranged in axially and spaced apart fashion. A lever mechanism is mounted within apertures in the handle and sleeve and includes a detent which seats within a selected one of the individual apertures in the shaft to maintain the shaft in a locked position.

  • Patent number: 5931064
Abstract: An insertion tool for inserting a multi-strand twisted cable into a blind mine tunnel roof bore hole includes a drive mechanism on one end thereof for fitting into a conventional bolting machine, and a socket on the opposite end thereof for receiving therein the bare end of a multi-strand twisted cable. The insertion tool socket is formed in the reverse pattern of the circumferential configuration of a conventional seven-strand twisted steel cable, having six essentially semi-cylindrical elongate and parallel arcuate channels formed therein in a spiral identical to that of the outside surfaces of respective cable strands of the twisted cable. The insertion tool is used by inserting, with a slight twisting action in the direction of the cable strand spiral, the bare end of the multi-strand steel twisted cable into the insertion tool socket mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5931062
Abstract: A mechanical rectifier efficiently rectifies or converts alternative clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of a main handle or other active driving element into unidirectional rotation of a main shaft. This mechanical rectifier is useful in manual tools such as a "no-waste screwdriver", which eliminates the wasted hand motion inherent in all ordinary hand tools, and in energy-saving devices such as a wave-powered electrical generator. The basic mechanical rectifier includes a shaft, two driving elements, and a reversing mechanism coupling the two driving elements so that they can only rotate in opposite directions. Each of the two driving elements has a separate one-way roller clutch pressed in its bore in proper orientation and riding on the shaft so that, whichever direction a driving element is rotated, it always turns the shaft in the same direction. Therefore, a tool bit at one end of the shaft always serves to tighten a fastener, while a tool bit at the opposite end only serves to loosen a fastener.

  • Patent number: 5927165
Abstract: The fastener-driving tool has an locking insert which expands or displaces to more securely lock the tool in the fastener. The tool has a distal end configured to engage a driving recess in a fastener, and has an annular recess adjacent the distal end, with a reduced cross-section at the annular recess, other than an axial circular cross-section. A locking insert having a generally similar cross-section to that of the distal end is positioned in the annular recess closely around the reduced cross-section. The locking insert may have a split portion which permits expansion of the locking insert when acted upon by the reduced cross-section as a result of rotation of the distal end relative to the locking insert, or may provide locking simply by displacement resulting from being acted upon by the reduced cross-section.

  • Patent number: 5927157
Abstract: A bolting system for securing at least two structures having a bolt, a coupling nut, a hydraulic tensioner, and a lock nut. The bolt has a body with a threaded end and another end with a bolt head. The coupling nut is engageable with the threaded end of the bolt and has a top face having one or more dog indentations. The hydraulic tensioner has a hydraulic cell with an engagement end that engages the threaded end of the bolt. The hydraulic cell stretches the bolt while an engaging member of the hydraulic tensioner engages the dog indentations of the coupling nut with complementing, engaging member dogs. The engaging member rotates the coupling nut while the engagement end of the hydraulic tensioner tensions the bolt. The lock nut is engageable with the threaded end of the bolt.

  • Patent number: 5921154
Abstract: A hand-mounted accessory for opening a twist-off cap bottle, the accessory being comprised of an elongated flexible web and flexible loops off the web near its opposite ends. The flexible loops are sized to fit over and be secured onto the user's thumb and index finger in the region between the first and second knuckles, the web ending near the second knuckles and between the loops then lying closely proximate and substantially aligned with the hand web portion between the thumb and index finger. The web is further sized to wrap more than half-way around and overlie the side edges of the twist-off cap even if the web is not exactly aligned parallel to the side edges. As hand-mounted, the accessory web automatically will be positioned against the cap side edges as the user's thumb and index finger close over the cap side edges during hand manipulation needed to twist the cap off the bottle.

  • Patent number: 5913953
Abstract: A device for opening sealed cans of the type using a pull-ring to initiate the opening of the lid. The device consists of a cylindrical hollow tube having a handle on one end. On the end of the device opposite the handle, there is a flattened portion of the tube which is made to slip under the pull-ring for initial raising of the pull-ring from the container lid. In the approximate transverse center of the hollow tube, there are two oblong openings that run longitudinally along the surface of the tube. Proximate to the oblong openings, there is an inwardly protruding rivet-like structure. In use, one of the oblong openings, depending upon the hand preference, is placed over the pull-ring until the cylindrical body of the tool comes to rest on the rim of the container. As the opener is then rotated along the rim of the container, the oblong opening begins to bind upon the pull-ring.

  • Patent number: 5911798
Abstract: A tool is provided with a handle extension, including inner and outer telescoping members. The inner member is press-fitted to the handle of the tool, and the outer member is configured to provide a comfortable grip for the user of the tool. A spring-loaded detent means between the inner and outer members provides two alternate positions, constituting a normal position in which the outer member is disposed radially of the inner member (and of the handle of the tool) and an extended position in which the outer member is disposed rearwardly of the handle of the tool for providing increased manual leverage in using the tool. In a preferred embodiment, the tool is a ratchet wrench and the telescoping members are molded of a suitable plastic.

  • Patent number: 5911799
Abstract: A generally cylindrical shaped tool handle holds multiple sizes of tools. The handle includes one or more holding slots each positioned on one of multiple surface faces into which hexagonal tools are inserted and held. Each holding slot is of a size and dimension which corresponds to a hexagonal tool size. In the preferred embodiment of the handle three of the faces have a single holding slot with multiple receiving holes for holding hexagonal wrenches of multiple sizes. A lock is positioned over the short leg of the hexagonal wrench and the holding slot to hold the wrench in position during use. The width of the bottom of the lock is smaller than the width of the top of the lock in order to give the lock a natural spring-like property, thereby allowing it to clamp onto the handle and remain in its locked position. The lock may be positioned to hold a tool in any one of the holding slots.

  • Patent number: 5906144
Abstract: A toenail hammer includes a head connected to a handle by a shank, where the shank is substantially bent such that, when toenailing in a confined space or around an obstacle the bent shape allows the nail being driven to be struck by the normal striking face of the hammer instead of the side face. The head and handle are in substantially the same relative alignment as in an ordinary hammer. An alternative embodiment positions the claw on the bent shank instead of the head.
