The holding member includes a base body to be fixed on the panel, a cylindrical main body erected perpendicularly from the base body, and a bearing hole formed in the main body and provided with threads or other fixing means to engage with the screw or other fixing means, thereby to fix the connecting portion therein.

    Abstract: An energy absorbing barrier for dissipating kinetic energy upon impact by a moving vehicle. The barrier comprises walls defining a container closed except for a fill opening to admit water. Various configurations of side walls are disclosed. The side walls are resiliently deformable to return to their original shape after being struck, the resilience of the walls and their deformability tending to form a capture region adjacent the vehicle tire which tends to slow the tire and prevent it from climbing and vaulting the barrier. In one embodiment the walls include longitudinally extending, vertically spaced apart traction spoiler channels to reduce the area of contact between the barrier and the tires of a vehicle. Other embodiments include fittings for end coupling of a barrier to like barriers, the fittings permitting adjacent barriers to be located at different heights to accommodate gradual changes in terrain elevation.

    Abstract: A truss bracket for use in a mine roof support system using double tie bars. The truss bracket comprises a substantially flat, planar member for engagement with the mine roof, and an extension depending normal to the planar member. The extension has an angularly disposed channel in communication with an aperture in the planar member. The channel and aperture accommodate a rib or anchor bolt for attachment of the truss bracket. The extension also includes a pair of openings spaced from each other and from the planar member. Each of the openings accommodate a tie bar in parallel relationship to the planar member and to each other. Most preferably, the truss bracket further comprises a tie bar support ring angularly attached to the planar member to accommodate a tie bar in the event of sagging.

    Abstract: A metal housing is provided with lead in members by way of a compression seal using a glass that can be worked below about 480.degree. C. The housing and lead in members can be preplated in a low cost process to provide a suitable protective coating that is present under the glass after the seal is made. This obviates a post seal plating and therefore avoids the related problems. It also permits using aluminum as the housing material.

    Abstract: A shaft retainer or support means adapted to encircle a midportion of a shaft without need of axial travel over the shaft end portions includes a body portion having a circular channel means of more than about 180 degrees circumference so that the shaft can be inserted laterally into the channel means by slight flexing which is of sufficiently flexible material to allow this. The body portion also includes a second channel extending parallel to the circular channel and interconnected therewith for receiving a locking key member which axially moves along the shaft in the second channel means thereby completing a 360 degree engagement with the circumference of the midportion of the shaft. The preferred embodiment also includes axially locking means for the slideable key member to maintain it in a desired axial position within the second channel of the body.

    Abstract: An apparatus for securing a flowline to a structure near the seabed comprises a vertically oriented guide funnel placed atop a guide tube that is provided with a helical shoulder cooperating with an alignment key mounted on the flowline. During installation the flowline is stabbed into the guide funnel and guide tube thereby causing the alignment key to slide along the shoulder until a pair of hinge pins mounted on the flowline have entered into a pair of slots in the wall of the guide tube. Subsequently the flowline is hinged down to a horizontal position.

    Abstract: A nut/clutch assembly for a rotary power screw, such as a linear actuator power screw, is disclosed in which the power screw is selectively rotated in one direction or the other, and in which the power screw has a pair of stops spaced apart from one another and which are rotatable with the power screw. A nut is provided having a central opening threadably engageable with the power screw, and the nut is threadably movable in axial direction along the power screw upon rotation of the latter. The nut has a circumferential groove thereon, and this groove has a base and a pair of spaced side walls. A collar is slidably received within the circumferential groove, and the collar is resiliently clamped onto the nut such that the collar frictionally engages the grooved base with a desired frictional force so as to permit the nut to rotate relative to the collar upon the nut being rotatably driven by the screw, and upon the collar being held in fixed rotary position.

    Abstract: A feed mechanism for moving a read/write head in a disk drive unit includes a pinion drivable by a motor, a rack held in mesh with the pinion, a support on which the rack is pivotally mounted and which is movable with the rack in a linear direction, and a compression resilient member such as a compression coil spring or a torsion spring having one end fixed to the rack and an opposite end fixed to the support for urging the rack in forced mesh with the pinion and for urging the rack in the linear direction. The feed mechanism also includes a pinion holder fixedly mounted on the rack and extending along the linear direction, the pinion holder having a member disposed in confronting relation to the pinion and spaced therefrom for preventing the rack and the pinion from being thrown out of mesh with each other.

The modules are removably mounted, side-by-side, in adjoining recesses of a generally flat, rectangular housing. The adjoining recesses are provided with a number of notches which are initially closed off during manfacturing. The insertable modules are provided with one or more protruding tabs which cooperatively fit into the corresponding notches in the housing, provided that the notches have been selectively opened in order to receive the tabs of the particular module. Furthermore, the mating connector portions may similarly be provided with corresponding tabs and notches, the latter being initially closed during manufacture and later selectively opened to receive a particular connector having certain tabs thereon.

    Abstract: A metal tape barrier is constructed of straight sections of elongated tape having barbs formed at spaced intervals along the tape. The barrier has a triangular configuration in cross section with the sections of tape forming the legs of the triangle. Adjoining convolutions of the barrier are connected together at spaced points in such a manner that the tape sections assume accordian pleat-like configurations when the barrier is stretched lengthwise for installation. A second set of sections of tape may be added to the barrier and may have their ends connected to intermediate regions of the sections forming the legs of the triangle. This second set of tape sections are disposed to close off the inside of the main triangle of the barrier. Connections to end regions of the tape sections are made at the location of the barbs on the tape so that the barbs project beyond the connections. In one configuration the barrier has a cross section like an isosceles triangle.

A push knob is inserted into the hollow shaft, and a pin is inserted into a pair of axially elongated holes in the hollow shaft and into a pin hole in the push knob. The crank-shaped strip has a pair of small projections adapted to be inserted into engaging holes of the first and second joint members as well as a pair of large projections adapted to be inserted into the first and second joint members and the turning plate. The crank-shaped strip also has a central portion fixed between the hollow shaft and the spring.

    Abstract: A multi-plate friction torque transmitting device has a plurality of friction plates which are controlled between engaged and disengaged conditions by a fluid-operated piston. The piston is comprised of an apply piston portion and a take-up piston portion. The take-up piston portion responds rapidly when pressurized to remove the disengaged clearance between the friction plates and initiates the engagement condition. The apply piston is operable to provide the high forces necessary for a complete engagement. These high forces are transmitted through a fluid medium disposed between the apply piston and the take-up piston. A centrifugal mechanism is operable on the take-up piston to counteract the centrifugal forces applied thereto during the disengaged condition.

    Abstract: A junction piece for releasably connecting rod-shaped structural elements 7, the junction piece consisting of a junction ball K and a pin element 4 to be radially screwed into the ball K. The pin elements 4 are of cylindrical shape and can be inserted with a cylindrical section into front end recesses of the structural elements 7 and can be fixed axially thereof. In this case, the cylindrical section is made to correspond to an axial guide casing for the pin element 4. The guide casing can be rotated and fixed in the front end recess of the rod-shaped structural elements 7, whereas the pin element 4 is arranged to be prevented from any rotation in the guide casing. It is, however, allowed to be axially displaced against the action of the spring 5.

    Abstract: The pinion is of two-piece construction, the two pieces being identical and nestably mated to define a recess, therebetween, which is interrupted by abutments, and which confines an abutment-engaging pin. Each piece has a plurality of teeth projecting therefrom, and the pieces are so mated that the teeth pluralities project form opposite sides of the formed pinion. A generally U-shaped rack, having teeth formed on the confronting surfaces of the parallel limbs thereof, is in mesh with the pinion, and the pin penetrates an input shaft upon which the pinion is mounted. As the shaft is turned in one direction, the pin drivingly engages the abutments of only one pinion piece, to cause the teeth of the latter to drive the rack in one, given direction. Too, if the shaft is turned in the opposite direction, the pin engages the abutments of only the other pinion piece, to cause its teeth to drive the rack in the same, one, given direction.

    Abstract: In one embodiment of this quick change mechanism, a narrow six spline hub is installed in the arbor hole of a circular saw blade or other disc tool heads such as grinders, sanders and buffers. This hub slides onto a matching splined drive shaft in which a narrow section of spline lands has been removed circumferentially to fit the width of the splined hub that is secured to the circular saw blade. A fifteen degree rotation of this splined blade hub on this shaft aligns all the lands and grooves, thus locking the hub relative the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft. To continue the locking, by locking the hub in rotation relative to the shaft, a splined sliding collar with spline land extensions, serving as locking fingers, is interposed into the spline grooves of the drive shaft and also the hub grooves. A blind longitudinal hole in the drive shaft contains a compression spring and an unthreaded bolt.
