  • Patent number: 5655282
Abstract: An insulating unit has a pair of glass sheets about an edge assembly to provide a compartment between the sheets. The edge assembly has a U-shaped spacer made of metal, metal coated plastic, gas and moisture impervious polymer, or gas and moisture impervious film coated polymer. The outer legs of the spacer and the glass provide a long diffusion path to limit the diffusion of argon gas out of the compartment. The edge assembly has materials selected and sized to provide edge assembly having an RES-value of at least 75. A spacer for use in insulating units includes a plastic core having a gas impervious film e.g. a metal film or a halogenated polymer film. Also taught herein are techniques for making the unit and spacer.

  • Patent number: 5651172
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for assembling materials by means of a riveting member of the type comprising a mandrel (2) and a sleeve (1). The sleeve (1) is provided with a peripheral recess on its external surface, in particular a groove (5), for forming a bending zone, while the mandrel has a head (9) able to deform the tubular end of the sleeve and to fold it back at the level of its bending zone. During riveting, the peripheral recess of the sleeve preserves the starting point of the countersink of the material against any stress and the bending zone of the sleeve permits providing a bearing surface of great dimension applied precisely against the materials.

  • Patent number: 5639363
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for mirror surface grinding which enables high quality, stable ELID grinding; and a grinding wheel for electrolytic dressing. The apparatus comprises a grinding wheel 3 having a contact surface 2 for contacting a workpiece 1, an electrode 4 facing the surface 2, nozzles 5 for supplying conductive fluid between the grinding wheel 3 and the electrode 4, and a power source 6 and feeder 7 for applying a voltage between the grinding wheel and the electrode 4. The bond material, which is selected from among iron, ferrous metal, cobalt, nickel and combinations of two or more thereof, along with grains and sintering aid are molded together and sintered to obtain the conductive grinding wheel. Next, a conductive water-soluble grinding fluid containing an alkanolamine and anions is supplied between the grinding wheel and the electrode, and a pulse wave voltage is applied between the grinding wheel and the electrode to dress the grinding wheel electrolytically during grinding.

  • Patent number: 5638909
Abstract: This invention relates to an attachment device for a pneumatic hammer tool used to remove a bolt or rod being held in a fixture. The low cost attachment device consists of an alignment sleeve and a tapered coil spring which aligns a driving bit of an air hammer to the bolt to be driven from the fixture and absorbs the shock of the impact during the driving operation. As the driving bit reaches the end of its travel, the addition of a spacer bar allows the driving operation to continue. A method for removal of the bolt is disclosed to facilitate the removal operation. This method relies on the contact of the alignment sleeve with the fixture and the compression of the spring to facilitate quick removal of the bolt. An application of this apparatus has been used to remove a spring attachment bolt on a truck trailer reducing the time for removal to 30 minutes from 3 to 4 hours.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing pieces of flexible material from a length thereof (such as tubes 30 from plastics tubing 4) has a rotor 6 with a port 9 through which the tubing 4 is fed. Rotation of the rotor about its axis 7 displaces an end 4' of the tubing over a cutter 15 to cut the tube piece. The tube piece 30 may be gripped by jaws 23 on a turret 20 and carried to a transfer station 31 at which the tube piece 30 may be picked up by jaws 71 on a vertically displaceable head 60 of a locating unit 3. The head 60 rotates with a turret 56 and is displaced vertically under cam control 62, 63 for fitting an end 30A of the tube piece into a component, such as an open topped container 40, in a seat 52 beneath the head 60. The container 40 may be conveyed to the seat 52 in a filling and sealing line for forming a beverage package.

  • Patent number: 5636424
Abstract: The vehicle safety seat supports an occupant and includes structure interconnecting the seat and the vehicle. The interconnecting structure is adapted to constrain the seat, upon vehicle deceleration, to follow a trajectory with respect to the vehicle which substantially minimizes a cost function associated with occupant injury. • Patent number: 5627141
Abstract: In order to obtain a ceramics system superconducting wire, a bulk type ceramics system superconductor or its precursor previously treated to have orientativity in its crystal structure is reduced in diameter in a state charged in a metallic pipe, thereby being elongated, and then heat treated. In the as-formed superconducting wire, crystal orientativity of a bulk formed of the superconductor or its precursor is maintained, whereby it is possible to obtain a superconducting wire having high critical current density. In order to further improve the critical current density, it is effective that the diameter reduction working step and the heat treatment step are alternately repeated a plurality of times.

  • Patent number: 5622024
Abstract: Collated drywall screws are provided for securing drywall to framing members. A collated screw has screws connected to each other by a holding strip. Each screw is received in a frangible sleeve about its threaded shank such that a screw on being screwed into a workplace is separated from the strip by the head of the screw passing through the sleeve breaking the sleeve. The improvement arises in having the head of the screw spaced from the frangible strip by a distance greater than the thickness of the drywall such that a screw is screwed through the drywall in at least partially into the frame support prior to the head of the screw engaging the frangible strip. The increased engagement with the frame member prevents the screw from stripping in the drywall and drawing drywall powder which may clog the power driver after repeated use. The invention provides drywall screws and a method of driving them which reduces the forces a user must manually apply to a power driver.

  • Patent number: 5617619
Abstract: A rivet fastening apparatus and method for joining two pieces by forming a rivet from the material of the pieces. First and second dies are used and the second die is moved into the first die to form a punched out hole and circumferentially spaced tabs in the pieces. The position of the dies are reversed relative to the pieces and the second die is advanced into the first die a second time so that a portion of the second die gives a radially outward direction to the tabs and another portion of the second die flattens the tabs against one another and against an outer face of one of the pieces to form a rivet head. One second die is shaped to form a round hole and four tabs and another second die forms a triangular hole with three tabs. Another embodiment has a punch rod in the first die that forms a smaller hole that is enlarged by a second die with a center through hole that receives the punch rod.

  • Patent number: 5613290
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for attaching a gear tooth sensor to an object, such as an engine block of an automobile. A clamping bar and a deformable conical washer are associated with a tubular portion of the sensor in such a way that rigid attachment of the clamping bar to the engine block, such as through the use of a threaded bolt, deforms the conical washer into a generally flat shape and, in the process, causes a distal end of the tubular portion of the sensor to move away from a target by a predetermined distance. Prior to deforming the deformable washer between the clamping bar and the engine block, the sensor is moved into contact with a rotatable target, such as a gear.
