Patent number: 4830574Abstract: A blade is comprised of a plurality of a family of airfoil sections, each section being characterized by a large leading edge radii, a camber having an apogee at approximately 45% of the airfoil section chord length and relatively blunt trailing edge. The airfoil sections taper in thickness ratio (h/b) from about 20% near the blade root to about 2% near the blade tip. The maximum thickness for each airfoil section increases along the chord length from about 39% of the airfoil section for a 20% airfoil section to about 42% of the airfoil section chord length of a 2% airfoil section. As such, the novel blade of the invention provides superior aerodynamic performance to the NACA Series 16 airfoil in the Mach 0.50 to 0.70 range with less susceptibility to foreign object damage and handling problems.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 1988Date of Patent: May 16, 1989Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Harry S. Patent number: 4828457Abstract: A casing which admits the fluid medium into the range of the impeller or first impeller in a fluid flow machine, particularly in a centrifugal pump, is made of several sections which have abutting surfaces. At least one such surface has a recess forming part of a fluid flow passage, and the recess is machined into the respective surface by a material removing tool. This simplifies the making of the casing and enables the latter to optimally conform to the conditions of flow between the supply conduit and the impeller or first impeller of the machine to thus reduce noise and stray movements and enhance the efficiency of the machine.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1987Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Assignee: Klein, Schanzlin & Becker AktiengesellschaftInventors: Gerd H. Patent number: 4820115Abstract: An improved open impeller for centrifugal compressors or the like that includes a hub portion and a disc portion having front and rear surfaces. A plurality of circumferentially spaced blades are positioned on the front surface of the impeller disc. A plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes are located on the rear suface of the disc and generally located between adjacent ones of the blades. The vanes are elongated and have their chords disposed at an angle relative to a radius of the circle on which the vanes are disposed to generate a pressure preventing gas exiting the blades from passing behind the rear surface of the impeller. Also, the vanes may be angled relative to the rear surface to produce a thrust counteracting the thrust produced by the impeller blades. The arrangement of the vanes is such that rigidity is provided to the impeller disc reducing the vibration of the disc when rotating at high speeds.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1987Date of Patent: April 11, 1989Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Phiroze Bandukwalla

Patent number: 4818176Abstract: A burst guard ring for stopping and retaining blade fragments thrown from a failing rotor of a turbine engine includes an outer fiber belt of a highly elastic material, preferably aramid fibers in a silicone rubber matrix surrounding the engine housing. Ceramic tiles are provided radially inwardly of the fiber belt or in the fiber belt exclusively at certain critical locations where any bulging of the fiber ring due to blade fragment impact would damage auxiliary devices or pipelines arranged adjacent or close to the engine at such critical locations. In non-critical areas the fiber belt provides sufficient protection without the ceramic tiles. The high energy absorbing protective effect of elastic fibers is advantageously combined with the low straining or expansion of ceramic, so that a low total weight is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1988Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Assignee: MTU Motoren-und Turbinen-Union Muenchen GmbHInventors: Werner Huether, Axel Rossmann

Patent number: 4818183Abstract: A low impedance safety guard for an air circulating fan with rotating fan blades which prevents a human hand, finger or foot from getting into the path of the rotating blades while yet achieving the unrestrictive air stream benefits of a relatively open guard which is generally considered unsafe. The guard comprises rear and front parallel and opposing substantially open, air stream unobstructive fan blade guard faces which will permit the hand, finger or foot to pass partially therethrough. A substantially closed circumferential wall is provided which connects the rear and front faces to enclose the fan blades approximately equal distant from the respective faces to prohibit the hand, figure or foot from reaching the blade path after passing partially through either face should a person unfortunately attempt to do so.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Inventor: Ronald E.
