  • Patent number: 4625583
Abstract: A vehicle drive plant comprises at least two prime movers mounted with their shafts aligned at an interposed base block enclosing a gear train communicating the prime mover shafts with a common output shaft. The gear train may include bevel gears at the individual prime mover inputs, being coordinated by at least one intermediate bevel pinion. • Patent number: 4625582
Abstract: A harmonic drive apparatus includes a circular spline having a number of internal teeth, a radially flexible cylindrical flexspline having outer spline teeth engageable with the internal teeth of the circular spline, and a wave generator disposed within the flexspline in engagement therewith. The circular spline, the flexspline, and the wave generator are rotatable around a rotational axis. The number of the external spline teeth of the flexspline is less than the number of the internal spline teeth of the circular spline. The wave generator has a cam section which generates a circumferential wave of radial deflection of the flexspline for causing the external spline teeth thereof to locally engage with the internal spline teeth of the circular spline. The cam section has elasticity in its radial direction sufficient for biasing the flexspline against the circular spline to absorb any play between the flexspline and the circular spline.

  • Patent number: 4619156
Abstract: A harmonic gear apparatus includes a tubular circular spline having a multiplicity of teeth on an inner periphery thereof, and a flexible spline disposed in the circular spline and having a multiplicity of teeth on an outer periphery thereof, the number of which is smaller than that of the circular spline. A flexion generating member rotatably mounted on a rotary shaft is rotatably disposed in the flexible spline. A generally annular flexible supporting member supports one end of the flexible spline in such a manner that the flexible spline is able to flex in a radial direction but has a significant rigidity in the circumferential direction. When the spline is flexed while the flexion generation member rotates in the flexible spline, some of its teeth engage with some of the teeth of the circular spline thereby rotating the circular spline.

  • Patent number: 4617836
Abstract: A transmission system which provides a tracked vehicle with a maximum rate of turn that decreases as higher forward gear-ratios are selected and, consequently, high low-speed manoeuvrability combined with relatively low, and therefore safe, maximum rates of turn at high vehicle speeds. This is achieved by means of a modifying differential arranged to rotate a steering input member of a steering differential at a rate equal to a multiple of the rotational speed of a power input member less a multiple of the rotational speed of the output member of a gear unit.

  • Patent number: 4617835
Abstract: The present invention provides a high efficiency automatic transmission for a vehicle in which the input speed to output speed gearing ratio is infinitely variable. The transmission of the present invention comprises a torque converter assembly having a first impeller drivingly connected to an input shaft. A second stage impeller is operatively coupled to a sun gear and receives the fluid from the first stage impeller. A turbine receives the fluid from the second stage impeller and this turbine, in turn, is drivingly connected to a ring gear. A reaction member operatively coupled with a one-way brake is disposed between the outlet end of the turbine vanes and the inlet end of the first stage vanes. At least one pair, and preferably three pair, of intermeshed pinions are disposed between the sun and ring gears so that one pinion also meshes with the sun gear while the other pinion meshes with the ring gear.

  • Patent number: 4616530
Abstract: A hydraulic control system is provided wherein a predetermined delay is provided by controlling the flow of fluid from or to frictional element which contributes to shifting into a neutral state within the transmission. With this delay, the engine can sustain rotational speed necessary for restarting upon resumption of fuel supply even after the manual valve is shifted to the neutral state during running condition of an automotive vehicle where the fuel supply to the engine is interrupted.

  • Patent number: 4616517
Abstract: A monoaxial coarse-fine adjusting apparatus for optical instruments has a pair of friction wheels whose peripheries are in engagement with the fine adjusting shaft. The axles to which the friction wheels are mounted are received in slots formed in the coarse shaft. The coarse adjusting knob has a surface which the friction wheel axles bear against. A pair of springs are provided which accommodate for torsion and backlash. Rotation of the coarse knob directly rotates the coarse shaft. Rotation of the fine knob rotates the friction wheels in a planetary fashion. The friction wheel axles which are received in the slots in the coarse shaft, drive the coarse shaft an amount which is proportional to the rotation of the fine knob.

  • Patent number: 4596165
Abstract: A clutch piston slidably mounted for motion in the axial direction on the turbine shaft or the turbine runner of a torque converter comprising a pump, an impeller, a turbine runner and a stator. A direct coupling clutch is positioned between the clutch piston and the housing of a torque converter. Pressurized oil is supplied for releasing the clutch within an oil chamber between one side of the clutch piston and the housing. A converter pressure is continuously applied to the oil chamber and to the other side of the clutch piston, which is the operating chamber of the torque converter. Thereby, the direct coupling clutch is continuously released. When the automatic transmission is in a selected high speed position, a line pressure higher than the converter pressure, is applied to the operating chamber causing the direct coupling clutch to engage. Converter pressure is applied continuously to the operating chamber of the torque converter through one port of a check valve.

  • Patent number: 4580459
Abstract: A change-speed gear in group-type construction with a main gear-shifting mechanism and a group gearing connected thereto. A primary shaft drives a main shaft selectively via gears of an intermediate shaft or by direct coupling of the primary shaft and the main shaft and at different speeds. The gears of the main shaft furthermore mesh with gears of the group stages of the group gearing; these latter gears are freely rotatably mounted on an output shaft and can be coupled therewith. To eliminate components and to provide a compact change-speed gear, one gear of the intermediate shaft, in addition to its function as shifting gear of the main gear-shifting mechanism, at the same times performs the function of a reversing gear for the reverse group of the group gearing.

  • Patent number: RE32125
Abstract: A change-speed transmission with a shift mechanism which selectively couples a plurality of change gears one at a time to a shaft on which the gears are journalled. The shift mechanism is disposed entirely within the transmission housing and includes a shift key arranged for axial sliding movement in a groove in the shaft. A pair of axially spaced projections at one end of the key project outwardly of the groove to embrace a collar which is journalled on the shaft. The collar is axially shifted on the shaft by a rotary shift fork which engages a circular groove in the collar to selectively position the key axially of the shaft in its several gear-engaging positions. A third radial projection at the other end of the key engages a different gear in each of the several positions thereby drivingly coupling the selected gear to the shaft to provide various forward drive speeds.
