Patent number: 4520930Abstract: The drawings and description disclose a thermoplastic coated square or rectangular cross-section container suitable for being filled with milk, juice or other still beverage, and having a top closure arrangement adapted to being readily partially opened to disclose an opening therein. The opening may be suitable for a straw or, alternatively, for drinking or pouring therefrom. The top closure arrangement includes edge panels on three sides thereof, with the front edge panel including straw opening means and having a central portion thereof adaptable to being folded back onto itself around a weakened or perforated line and having a lift tab extending therefrom, and a cover panel secured to the three edge panels such that the cover panel is peeled away from the front edge panel by manually lifting the lift tab. Alternately, in one embodiment, lifting the lift tab exposes a straw opening access to the contents, without disturbing the cover panel.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1983Date of Patent: June 4, 1985Assignee: Ex-Cell-O CorporationInventor: Robert E. Patent number: 4520957Abstract: There is disclosed a flat end closure arrangement for a thermoplastic coated paperboard container, and the blank therefor, wherein four sets of dual, oppositely skewed, supplementary score lines are formed on two sides of the resultant end closure, such that they are adapted to be folded into position just inside the usual horizontal score lines separating the end closure panels from the sidewall panels. These supplementary score lines provide a second, substantially 90.degree. bend for the paperboard layers, supplementing a 90.degree. bend about the respective horizontal score lines, in lieu of each usual 180.degree. bend about the respective horizontal score lines, thereby diminishing the chances for cracking of the thermoplastic coating at the bend locations.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1984Date of Patent: June 4, 1985Assignee: Ex-Cell-O CorporationInventor: Robert E. Lisiecki

Patent number: 4520929Abstract: A flat top liquid carrying, paperboard container including four side panels, and inner and outer pairs of top closure panels alternately connected by respective horizontal score lines to the top edges of the four side panels as extensions thereof. While the inner pair of top closure panels each typically includes a substantially triangular panel portion and a pair of integrally connected fold-back panels, the outer pair consists of one shorter and one longer panel. A fold-over panel segment is formed on the end of the shorter panel. A diagonal opening-assist score line is formed on each of the shorter and longer panels, and a reverse diagonal opening-assist score line is formed on the fold-over panel segment extending from an end of the adjacent diagonal score line for lying on top of the latter when the fold-over panel segment is folded. A lift tab is formed on a side edge of the longer panel and extends past a portion of the edge of the adjacent fold-back panel.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1984Date of Patent: June 4, 1985Assignee: Ex-Cell-O CorporationInventor: Robert E. Patent number: 4519499Abstract: A unique container is disclosed which has at least three chambers for the separate storage and selective mixing of at least two components. The container includes two outer flexible sheets and an inner, diaphragm sheet, all sealed about their peripheries in the preferred embodiment. Multiple breakable lines of securement are formed between one of the outer sheets and the inner, diaphragm sheet. Multiple permanent lines of securement are formed between the inner diaphragm sheet and the other outer sheet, extending substantially parallel to and substantially the length of the respective breakable lines of securement. Such a container structure defines two chambers which have no common boundary and an intermediate chamber. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the intermediate chamber does not store any substance; rather, it serves as a buffer or barrier chamber and also acts as a test for seal integrity. In another embodiment of the invention, the intermediate chamber holds a third component for mixing.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1984Date of Patent: May 28, 1985Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Albert Stone, Edwin Pyde, Peter Carveth

Patent number: 4516679Abstract: A multipli-layered tamper-proof wrap consisting of a number of over-layed thin plastic sheets bonded around the outer edge to contain one or a number of chemical layers therein, appropriately separated, whose penetration or puncture will result in a visual indication at the puncture, and including distinct seals fixed at spaced intervals to the outer or external wrap sheet that indicate wrap or product origin and are to discourage wrap substitution. The wrap is for encapsulating a consumer product so as to provide a continuous wrap surface therearound that will give a visual indication of a breach in wrap integrity at a point of penetration or puncture.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1982Date of Patent: May 14, 1985Inventors: Carolyn N. Patent number: 4516668Abstract: A combination knock-down handbag and mat which is formed of a blank of sheet material of a predetermined length and width which is peculiarly seamed and secured so that in the assembled or folded position, the blank forms a handbag and in the unfolded position the blank defines a mat, e.g. a beach mat. To form the mat, which can be subsequently formed into a handbag, one end of the blank is initially reversely folded onto a portion of the blank and secured thereto to define one or more open end pockets. A handle is secured to the open end of the pocket. To convert the mat into a handbag the remainder or extended portion of the blank is reversely folded in accordian fashion to the size and shape of the reversely folded portion. The opposed end portions of the folded blank thus folded are then folded relative to the central portion thereof. With the blank so folded, the central pocket thus formed is turned inside out to define the handbag in the final folded position of the blank.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1983Date of Patent: May 14, 1985Inventor: Rose M. Patent number: 4513864Abstract: An interior core protector for protecting the interior of a coil of material, e.g., coiled sheet steel, from damage is disclosed. The core protector includes a pair of overlapping formed angular paperboard members each having a series of spaced die cuts in one leg thereof permitting the angular members to be bent to conform to the inner diameter of the coil. The cuts in one leg are offset from the cuts in the other leg such that when the protector is bent for placement in the interior core of the coil and the width of the cuts increases, a paperboard segment of one member nevertheless overlies the cut in the other to provide protection for the material about the full circumference of the interior core. The core protector is characterized in part by economies of materials used, economic use of such materials, and economies of shipment.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1984Date of Patent: April 30, 1985Assignee: Signode Paper Products CompanyInventor: Henry L.
