  • Patent number: 7212811
Abstract: A geographical web browser allows a user to navigate a network application such as the Word Wide Web by physically navigating in geographical coordinates and roaming through coverage areas of cellular base stations, wireless LANs, microcells, and other such broadcast domains. A mobile unit receives unsolicited push messages in a local hotspot area. A packet filter filters local hotspot push messages to see whether they coincide with the user's preferences. In some embodiments, the push message is used to notify the user that information is available for download, and in other embodiments the push message or pushed packet sequence provides the content directly to the user.

  • Patent number: 7206301
Abstract: A system and method of data communication handoff across heterogeneous wireless networks. A wireless telephony network comprises a base station system (BSS) and a visit location register (VLR). The BSS manages data communication in a cell. The VLR generates a temporary authentication identity applicable in the cell when a mobile terminal is successful authentication for data communication via the wireless telephony network, and transmits the temporary authentication identity to the mobile terminal. A wireless local area network (WLAN) located in the cell comprises an access point. The access point receives the temporary authentication identity from the wireless telephony network and authenticates the mobile terminal for data communication via the WLAN by verifying the temporary authentication identity upon the mobile terminal associates with the access point.

  • Patent number: 7203501
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining position information of a mobile station (MS). The apparatus directly estimates a propagation delay error by measuring a signal strength of a propagation signal for use in a mobile communication system, and reduces a MS position error. The apparatus reduces the MS position error by either combining the propagation signal for the mobile communication system with a GPS signal or using only the propagation signal. The apparatus receives Mobile Station (MS) position acquisition signals from the mobile communication system in order to estimate position information of the MS. The position signal acquisition unit receives the MS position acquisition signals, acquires a position signal from the received MS position acquisition signal, and outputs an acquired position signal. The primary position calculator calculates a primary position using the acquired position signal received from the position signal acquisition unit.

  • Patent number: 7187926
Abstract: A process and system for controlling the use of satellite transmission capacity in terrestrial networks for the substitution of out-of-order data lines. The circuit/process is characterized in that an independent, local control apparatus, which monitors a backup terminal with the software specially written for this application, cooperates in limited manner with the data transmission device of the user and, based on the analysis of a data control signal, detects the need for alternative routing. Via communication lines and modems, the control apparatus switches on the transmission carrier of the affected satellite modem which is connected to a satellite antenna. The satellite antennas are in communication with the satellite via the transmission carrier. All other, non-affected terminals in the network also receive the transmission carrier of the affected satellite modem. The transmission capacity of the asynchronous overhead of the satellite modem is used for the transmission of destination addresses.

  • Patent number: 7184710
Abstract: In a radio access network, a drift radio network controller (DRNC) [262] transmits to a serving radio network controller (SRNC) [261] either (1) a filtering rule for a candidate cell [so that the serving radio network controller (SRNC) can generate a measurement list for a user equipment unit having a connection controlled by the serving radio network controller (SRNC)], or (2) a list of cells qualifying [according to filtering rules stored at and applied by the drift radio network controller (DRNC)] for inclusion in the measurement list for the user equipment unit. The filtering rule provides criteria useful for determining whether the candidate cell qualifies for inclusion in the measurement list of cells for the user equipment unit. If the candidate cell is a shared cell or cell for which the user equipment unit otherwise has permission for usage, the candidate cell qualifies for inclusion in the measurement list for the user equipment unit.

  • Patent number: 7181179
Abstract: A hand-held electronic device comprises an IC-card chip unit, a watch CPU, a power source unit, a display unit, and a switch connected between the power source unit and the IC-card chip unit. The watch CPU has a power supply controlling unit. The IC-card chip unit performs contactless data communication with an external transmitter-receiver in close range. The watch CPU operates on power from the power source unit, receives data from the IC-card chip unit to display the data on the display unit or to process the data before displaying them on the display unit. The power supply controlling unit closes a switch at least during the period of time that the watch CPU receives data from the IC-card chip unit, thereby causing power to be supplied from the power source unit to the IC-card chip unit.

  • Patent number: 7171204
Abstract: A method of handling call establishment requests when a MS moves from one Serving Radio Network Controller (SRNC) to another SRNC in a 3G wireless network, such as a UMTS network. If SRNC Relocation is being prepared, an Iu connection request and Paging request received by the SRNC are suspended and stored in a buffer. If the Relocation procedure completes successfully, the messages are discarded. If the Relocation procedure fails or is cancelled, the messages are processed normally. However, if SRNC Relocation has already been triggered, all call establishment messages (except Direct Transfer Messages) received by the SRNC are ignored. Other post Iu connection messages received by the SRNC are processed instead of potentially being ignored.

  • Patent number: 7171189
Abstract: A mobile telecommunication system supporting location based billing of data services is provided. The mobile telecommunication system includes a plurality of routing areas each having one or more base transceiver stations therein for providing a radio interface to a mobile terminal. A service node provides data services to the mobile terminal in two or more of the routing areas. The service node opens a mobility call detail record and a location container therein when the mobile terminal attaches to the mobile telecommunication system. The service node opens a packet data protocol call detail record and a traffic volume container when the mobile terminal activates a data session with the service node. The traffic volume container counts data service traffic volumes transferred to and from the mobile terminal. The location container is automatically closed when the mobile terminal roams from one routing area to a second routing area.

  • Patent number: 7167725
Abstract: In a music reproducing apparatus, a timbre data memory has a limited capacity for storing timbre data corresponding to a first number of timbres, which is less than a second number of timbres reserved in a data source. An interface can be operated to transfer the timbre data from the data source to the timbre data memory so that the timbre data memory stores the transferred timbre data. A score data memory stores score data representing a music piece. A tone generator is set with a tone generating parameter derived from the score data stored in the score data memory for generating tones of the music piece. A performance controller interprets the score data to read out timbre data designated by the score data from the timbre data memory for setting the tone generator with the read timbre data so that the tone generator can generate the tones having timbres specified by the score data.

  • Patent number: 7164683
Abstract: The present invention provides a method (100) for virtual path switching of an ATM cell on a processing communications satellite. The method includes establishing a set of VPIs (104) associated with output ports on the satellite and assigning one VPI to an ATM cell (108). The ATM cell may then be received by an input port of the satellite (110). An associated output port (114) for the ATM cell is determined from the VPI, and the ATM cell is transferred to that output port (116). The present invention may also provide for multicast switching (400). The VPI assigned to the ATM cell may be associated with a multicast output port. The ATM cells may be reproduced (426) and reassigned with a new VPI from a multicast group of VPIs (428). The reproduced cells are received at an input port of the satellite (430) for routing to the corresponding output ports.
